A couple weeks ago, our own Adam Czech took a look at the Green Bay Packers players hitting free agency this offseason.  Of the 19 offensive and defensive players, 16 are unrestricted and 3 are restricted. What I’ve done below is made a list of the top ten unrestricted players Ted Thompson should consider re-signing
10. Ryan Pickett
9. Matt Flynn
8. B.J. Raji
7. James Jones
6. Mike Neal
5. Johnny Jolly
4. John Kuhn
3. Andrew Quarless
2. Sam Shields
1. Evan Dietrich-Smith

I might go this way:

1. Sam Shields
2. EDS
3. James Starks
4. John Kuhn
5. Andrew Quarless
6. Mike Neal
7. Matt Flynn

Replace the rest.

Shields' youth, experience and incredible speed makes him our top priority. Our DL needs an overhaul, and I believe we've already gotten a decent jump on that through the past two drafts. Complete it now, through draft and FA. Our running game was just starting to come together to be a potent part of our offense, one that was difficult for other teams to stop. I would keep as much of those components together for as long as possible. Kuhn is getting a little long in the tooth for my own tastes, but I can see where he maintains a solid consistency to our offense. Quarless is a much better TE, a more complete TE than I think many give him credit for. I did see where Mike Neal may be something to contend with as a hybrid OLB and I wouldn't mind seeing him grow in that role, and Matt Flynn seems perfect to be backing up Rodgers.

2. Evan Dietrich-Smith
- Played well this season and at this point, there is no viable back up. J.C. Tretter is unproven at this time and still needs time to grow at this level.
3. Andrew Quarless
- Really came into his own towards the end of the season. Behind Quarless at the tight end position are unproven and below-average players. Add the possibility of Finley not coming back and the Packers would have a huge problem at the tight end position.
4. Johnny Jolly
- He made a difference on this defensive line. He was fun to watch and did well for someone coming off a three year hiatus. With the possibility of Raji going to another team, this is a bigger deal. Barring the neck injury, he should come at a decent price.
5. James Jones
- A reliable receiver who already tested the FA market once. Jones has been a great asset for the Packers receiving core. He showed his toughness this season by playing with broken ribs. I believe it is important to keep the receiving core together.
6. Matt Flynn
- Let's just stop playing with this. Matt's home is in GB as Rodgers career back-up and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. He came into the games this past season and did what a back-up should do...make the game winnable.
7. Mike Neal
- He made strides this season at his new position. Imo, not the typical guy you'd want to see playing there but the Packers have made due with what they have. Depends on the price to keep him.
8. John Kuhn
- Important player in key situations. His pass blocking/blitz pick-up is incredible and he is a reliable player. Getting older and probably an affordable keep.
9. James Starks
- James Starks played well this season but as usual, he is riddled with injuries every single season. Chances are, another team is going to come in and give him a nice contract. Packers are also pretty set at this position with Eddie Lacy, Johnathan Franklin and DuJuan Harris coming back.
10. Ryan Pickett
- He has lost a step or two but can still do some work on the run game. Should be affordable and maybe has a season or two left in him.

I couldn't add Raji to this list. Reason being, he totally dogged this season which just makes me think he doesn't want to be with the Packers and quite possibly, not in the 3-4 defensive scheme. For that, he is not important to re-sign. Why put up big money to a player that doesn't give an effort?
It pains me not to add Finley to the list. I'd love to but I just don't think he is coming off that injury. Even if he does, do the Packers try to re-sign him?

Even with Tramon Williams and Casey Hayward under contract for 2014, I think Sam Shields is the most valuable to the team in this crop of free agents.

Sign Matt Flynn to a two year veteran minimum. Use a pick on a QB in the draft between rounds 3 and 5.

Jermichael Finley or James Jones should be resigned. Jordy Nelson, Randall Cobb and Jarrett Boykin make me lean towards signing Finley to an incentive laden contract. Of course, this assumes he's medically cleared for NFL action. If Finley leaves, then Packers have to resign James Jones AND Andrew Quarless. Yes, Brandon Bostick (sp) might develop into something special, but Packers need TE depth.

Assuming Johnny Jolly is medically cleared from his neck injury, he should be resigned. He gave the Packers some nasty on the DL that has been sorely missed.

James Starks complimented Eddie Lacy very nicely. Adding DuJuan Harris to the mix with Johnathan Franklin gives the Packers a solid quartet of RB's.

I read that Evan Dietrich-Smith did very well at Center. I don't know OL worth a lick, nor do I pretend to, but if true, it's important he is resigned.

    1. Shields - obviously
    2. Quarless - solid player - I like his game better than Finley before the injury.
    3. Dietrich-Smith - We were at least able to run up the middle occasionally this year.
These three are the only ones I would be disappointed to see gone.
    4. Starks - He did a very good job, but if his price gets too high, we've got Harris and Franklin.
    5. Kuhn - Before last season, I was ready to see him gone, but if he is cheap enough, he played good enough to be worth a roster spot.
    6. Jolly - He was a positive addition to the team and should be cheap.
From #7 on, I'd rather we didn't sign them for what the cost will probably be:
    7. Jones - He would be at best the third wideout, and I actually like Boykin better than him also. Assuming it would take a lot of money to sign him, no.
    8. Neal - I never liked switching him to OLB. Considering his injuries, etc., we shouldn't pay what he will probably cost.
    9. Flynn - I'd rather have Tolzien with a full training camp as the backup.
    10. Pickett/Wilson - only marginally worth the roster spot if they got the vet. minimum.
    11. Finley - I was against paying what it would cost to sign him before the injury, and if he does play, somebody will give him more than he is worth.
    12. Raji - NEVER! No Way, Not At Any Price. I question whether he dogged it; I suspect he is really just that bad. Hopefully he doesn't go somewhere else and play like we all expected when we drafted him.

I noticed Lattimore on one of the lists. Is he a free agent? If so, I put him up there with EDS and Quarless - just below Shields.
