Agree with you, Vince, re: multiple needs on defense.

But I think the needs on offense go a bit farther than you say. Going into this season I thought the only OL without questions was Sitton. IMO Dietrich-Smith and Lang did a bit more than I thought. But they are still in the mediocre-to-serviceable category.

It made no sense to me that, when the team has the best quarterback in the league, they didn't strive to build a dominant line. And we finally saw what happens when you throw the dice too many times and said quarterback takes more hits.

It makes even less sense now, when they not only have that best quarterback, they actually have a franchise running back as well. With improvement on the OL, this offense could be more dominant, IMO, than any offense in history.

OL OL OL OL OL!!!

For the first time in years, our nucleus looks hazy.

Superbowl year, you could put your finger on exactly what it is the team needed for the future to remain one of the premier teams in the NFL.

What hurts me is the unknown, because taking impending FA into consideration, we as fans have no idea of the scope required to rebuild the defense. It isn't a big rebuilding job offensively, as a personal opinion probably shared by the majority of fans i'd like an elite tight end, and a center.

Defensively however, looking at the roster top to bottom, It's clear improvement is needed on all three levels. A Nose tackle, a linebacker and a safety in my opinion. I would be VERY surprised if Ted goes for the quick fix (Orapko, Byrd), cost implications/philosophy considered.

Sometimes, just a fresh start is enough to improve top to bottom. Who knows, maybe a change in defensive coaching staff could be the catalyst for an improvement.

Right now though, I am worried about the defense going forward.

But another way to see it is to get some good playmakers and then the whole defense improves.

In our current status I would think fixing the problems is impossible so I'd focus in getting at least 2 good playmakers in defense.

In 2010 we had Woodson, Clay, Tramon and Collins and we knew any of those could create a huge play.

Today we still have Clay but that's all.

All we need is to get guys back healthy.

Imagine ALL the players we lost, and we still came down to the last second against the Niners. Ok, we'll need a TE, but Bostick and Q can get us through a year.
