Here is my take on an Offensive lineman and it is from a purely selfish standpoint that I make this observation. Normally I am in total agreement that you build from the inside out, meaning from the line, offense or defense, first. I have to admit that I am a little frustrated that our attempts to do that the past several years have not panned out. At least not yet.
I know linemen are not the sexy excitement generating picks that skill positions are and even LBs and lock down defensive backs are but I think they are crucial. That said I would not be opposed to getting drafting a high end lineman with our #1 pick.

Now for the selfish part. Like I said I am getting frustrated with our lack of excitement producing potential from out top pick. I got a lot of my fix with Lacy this year and believe me it has helped. but it would not kill me to see a first round pick that would light it up on the defensive side of the ball. That game changing ILB that Darkane covets or a defensive back that really can make QBs think twice about challenging.

Sadly, when drafting 25th or lower that excitement usually is not there. The potential may be there and the hype may be there but the excitement is not. It almost like we hope the guy can do great things but do we really expect it? That said, a high draft pick (15 or higher) and a position other than lineman might get me excited about the draft again.

I WILL NOT hope for the Packers to lose just to gain a higher draft pick as that goes against everything I stand for as a fan. I WON'T hope they do poorly just so some coach or GM gets fired. That is just counter intuitive IMO.

What I will do is realize that these losses, however heartbreaking they may be, just might be part of the key toward getting my team back to drafting #32 again and that is all we really want right? And if that #32 pick is an offensive lineman I guess I will deal with it and look forward to a pleasant surprise from later on in the draft.

I think we'll be ok next year. Hopefully Tretter will compete to start at C. Then we'll have depth all along the line.

Not sure id be too excited to see a T again. It seems a huge amount of those top of the draft cant miss Ts end up being huge misses. Just look at this last draft, Bakhtiari has beenjust as good or better than the 1 and 2 overall picks and hes a 4th rounder that probably needed to stay in college 1 more year.

His best year was in 2010, that year he brought something different to the team. He was a difference maker, he took the ball away through the air 3 times and knocked down 10 passes.

Me thinks Hawk is sorta losing it in the coverage aspect of things and the play making ability. I know I know Hawk has been good this year blah blah blah. We need something better. The guys we have now is not good enough. We need that Patrick Willis on our defense, if not, our defense will still struggle next year. Throw all the stats at me that you want, my eye test tells me the guy isn't getting it done. No one is on this defense.

If I were to draft today I would want S, MLB, and TE the most

Not particularly in that order.

The draft is rich this year with those certain postions . I sure hope we take advantage of it.

I want us to go LB in the first round. Either the MLB from Alabama CJ Mosley or UCLA OLB Anthony Barr.

CJ Mosley could give us some much needed toughness that the interior of our defense lacks. Too often I see either Jones or Hawk get pushed around, get carried extra yards attempting a tackle, or just flat out miss. I know we just drafted Perry, but you can never have too many pass rushers, especially with our injury prone OLBs. Anthony Barr is a flat out stud and potential franchise player. I've liked him all season, but until now, did not think we would have a chance at drafting him.

I want this draft to focus mainly adding toughness. No more of these finesse players that Thompson loves to draft. I want some inside linebackers that are big and add some thump to our defense. I don't care about if they're considered weak against the pass because they couldn't be much worse than what our inside linebackers are doing now. I want some tough offensive linemen also. Just give me some big, nasty, linemen with a mean streak and I'll be happy. No more of these "projects" who apparently just need a couple offseason strength programs to get stronger. I don't care what their 40 times are just give me guys that already have that toughness and strength.

Okay my rant is over

Hawk does not do that. Because of his contract and durability, I’d still keep him. However, I wouldn’t let his presence prevent me from drafting an ILB high.

By NFL standards, three years for just under $12 million is not a fortune. Jones is making less than four million per year. That's a reasonable contract. In addition, Hawk’s making less than $11 million in the final three years of his contract. That‘s another team-friendly contract. In my opinion, the team can draft an impact inside linebacker and afford to keep all three players.
