Rapidly improving Mike Daniels has been rushing the passer at an almost identical rate as Cullen Jenkins did in his finest full seasons for the Packers. It has taken 2½ years, but the Packers finally appear to have replaced Jenkins with an interior rusher of comparable skill and production.

I can say I was wrong about Daniels as well. I wanted the "smaller guys" gone in the offseason. But then after awhile I thought to myself this guy isn't small, he's just short. Daniels reminds me of Cullen a lot. He's short, quick, and strong. I wish they'd use him every down, which I think they're beginning realize and do. I'd honestly rather have him on the field more than Jolly. Even though Jolly is a good run defender, Daniels actually makes more plays in his limited role. He seems to be the only one on the D-Line, except Datone Jones, to get pressure on the QB. I hope eventually the 3-4 Lineman can be Jones, Raji, and Daniels. That would be lethal if they could get pressure out of the base defense.

Daniels is a good pass rusher, no doubt. But if he played much on base downs I think he would routinely get crushed. I just don't think he could hold the point of attack very well on running plays.

I don't mind that, though. As long as a player can rush the passer, he is very valuable in today's NFL.

Right now though Capers current scheme ask the base to normally be NTs and clog the line.

Though when Capers had Jenkins they were a lot more aggressive in base and were aggressive with the 3-4 DEs and didn't ask them to clog but to attack.

And I think Wade Phillips scheme with the Cowboys might be interesting with this Packers team, ask the 3-4 DEs to clog (putting Pickett, Raji and Jolly there) and asking the NT to attack and get into the backfield (Daniels and Jones there).

That's why Jay Ratliff was getting so many sacks for a NT... because while at the NT spot he wasn't playing a NT role, he was asked to attack A LOT, and not clog the OL.

There are plenty of base 3-4 DEs that are smaller than 300lbs and he's definitely got the strength to handle it. He may not be as dominant holding a point vs the run as he is pass rushing but I don't see him getting crushed.

Plus, I'd prefer to have Jolly out there because I think he's better at stopping the run, holding the point of attack, and he has a little more height to knock down some passes.

Daniels is a pretty solid pass rusher, but I don't think he'd be anything more than an average full time player. I'd take a pass rusher over a "run stuffer," though, especially with Aaron Rodgers healthy.
