Brandon Meriweather faces suspension for illegal hits

Brandon Meriweather has a well-earned reputation as a head-hunter in the Washington Redskins' secondary. His unwillingness (or inability) to change his playing style will now take him off the field.

NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Monday that the NFL is expected to suspend Meriweather at least one game for repeated uses of his helmet as a weapon, according to a league source. Vice president of operations Merton Hanks will review Meriweather's game tape before deciding how many games Meriweather will sit.

Meriweather was flagged twice for illegal hits in Sunday's 45-41 win over the Chicago Bears. After the game, Brandon Marshall -- the recipient of one of those hits -- railed against Meriweather's playing style, saying the safety should be suspended or kicked out of the game entirely.

"Guys like that really don't understand that there is life after football," Marshall said, via the Chicago Tribune.

A one-game suspension would cost Meriweather his $70,588 game check. The NFL fined Meriweather $42,000 last month for a helmet-to-helmet hit.

"I feel like every hit that I took was a legit hit," he said, via the Washington Post. "I wasn't trying to be dirty. I wasn't trying to hurt nobody. I didn't launch with my head. I used my shoulder like they told me to do. Everything I did was a pointer from them (league officials). ... You've just got to play. There ain't nothing I can do about it. I just go out there and play."

The NFL is about to send its loudest message yet to Meriweather. We'll see if this one gets through.

1 game is not nearly enough. It should be for the rest of the year which will get lowered to 1 quarter. 🙄

This guy alone is enough to make anybody doubt how serious both the NFL AND the NFLPA are taking concussions. How this guy is still playing is a mystery to me. It's a no-brainer (quasi-pun intended) that by now he should be out of the league with as many blatant headshots he has taken. Another thing is that it really doesn't reflect well on the organization either. Nothing against the Redskins, but I can't help but think they are condoning the behavior by enabling/putting him out on the field. At some point you have to realize the guy is no good.

I saw that hit yesterday.
It looks like he is trying to kill someone.
He should be suspended for life IMHO.

Didn't see the hits in question as I didn't watch most of the Bears game. Does anyone know of any links to video of the hits offhand?

If these were once again spearing efforts they need to issue a significant suspension. They should've done that last time rather than expecting a fine (lower than previously issued fines) was going to do anything to curb his behavior.

Meriweather saying there is nothing he can do should only further emphasize the need for a suspension; because, you utter bellend, there is something you can do: stop spearing people.

Official word: Two games

Pretty much the most the NFL could get away with without the NFLPA going apeshit.

Guys like this need to be taught only one thing

Mid-Section

You jack somebody up in the stomach or sternum they will remember it, and have a pretty good chance of dislodging a reception. It is usually pretty clear when a defender is going for the head area and when they are not. It isn't about helmet to helmet, or leading with the head. A shoulder to the helmet is just as dangerous and damaging as a helmet to helmet.

Don't hit higher than the bottom of the numbers. There is a good 3 feet between the knees and the head area. Plenty of space to hit, if the would do as we are taught when kids.
The world needs ditch diggers too Danny!!!

Thanks to Porforis for linking the videos; was at the office and couldn't check at the time. Agreed completely with Stevie. Textbook Meriweather.

NFL tried to pretend he didn't have a serious habit of doing this shit when he concussed Lacy and himself in a single game. The Bears are lucky Jeffery and or Marshall didn't end up the same. He launched. End of. Chicken shit way to play the game and it has no place in this sport. You aren't a hard ass for head hunting. Deliver a shot like a man to the chest.

I never wish or cheer for an injury to a player, Packer opponent or otherwise; but if I were an offensive player out on the field with Meriweather, I'd be aiming for the side of his knee. If the NFL won't take him off the field after repeated offenses, I would; for the welfare of my team mates.

dfosterf (26-Jun) : I think it would be great to have someone like Tom Grossi or Andy Herman on the Board of Directors so he/they could inform us
dfosterf (26-Jun) : Fair enough, WPR. Thing is, I have been a long time advocate to at least have some inkling of the dynamics within the board.

Martha Careful (25-Jun) : I would have otherwise admirably served
dfosterf (25-Jun) : Also, no more provision for a write-in candidate, so Martha is off the table at least for this year
dfosterf (25-Jun) : You do have to interpret the boring fine print, but all stockholders all see he is on the ballot
dfosterf (25-Jun) : It also says he is subject to another ballot in 2028. I recall nothing of this nature with Murphy

dfosterf (25-Jun) : Because I was too lazy to change my address, I haven't voted fot years until this year
dfosterf (25-Jun) : of the folks that run this team. I do not recall Mark Murphy being subject to our vote.
dfosterf (25-Jun) : Ed Policy yay or nay is on the pre-approved ballot that we always approve because we are uninformed and lazy, along with all the rest
dfosterf (25-Jun) : Weird question. Very esoteric. For stockholders. Also lengthy. Sorry. Offseason.
