This is the kind of thing that really ticks me off about our society. We seem to try and over compensate and in the process send the wrong and inappropriate message.

North Andover (Mass.) High School senior volleyball player Erin Cox was suspended for five games and stripped of her captaincy after driving to pick up a friend who was too drunk to drive, according to multiple reports.

The school punished Cox after an incident two weeks ago in which she received a call from a friend who was too drunk to drive home from a party. When Cox arrived to pick up her friend, police already were there and arrested several people for underage possession of alcohol, and warned several others they'd be summoned to court for drinking.

Cox's mother, Eleanor, told the Boston Herald her daughter was among those summoned despite Boxford police officer Brian Neeley vouching for Erin's sobriety. Eleanor Cox filed a lawsuit hoping to reverse the school's decision, citing a written statement from Neeley, but the court ruled Friday it had no jurisdiction over the matter.

"She did what she thought was right, and I'm very proud of her," Eleanor Cox told WBZ-TV in Boston on Sunday night.

Appearing on "Good Morning America" on Tuesday, Eleanor Cox was asked how her daughter is handling the situation.

"She's very fragile, and I'm worried about her," she said. "I'm very worried about her."

Attorney Geoffrey Bok, who represented the school in court Friday, told the Herald that school officials were left with little choice once police became involved, telling the paper, "The school is trying to take a very serious and principled stand regarding alcohol. And we all get that. Teen drinking is a serious problem."

North Andover athletic director Jon Longley did not respond to messages seeking comment Monday night.

The Cox family attorney, Wendy Murphy, released a statement to "Good Morning America" on Tuesday.

"By punishing Erin Cox, the North Andover School District sends a contrary and very dangerous message -- that young people are better off letting their friends drive drunk," the statement read.

"She's very fragile."

Not that I disagree with the tenor of the article or the OPs point.

Maybe its because I'm an educator by profession, but I tend to be unsurprised at the boneheadedness that gets exhibited by those "administering" it.

What's the difference between a politician and an education administrator?

The politician generally gets paid more for his incompetence.

But "devastated/cheated/screwed over" is a different kettle of fish than "fragile".

Fragile is something you feel after being assaulted or raped. After a hurricane destroys your house. After your best friend is killed in a car accident. It is not something that happens just because of a single significant injustice committed by some asshole administrator/hack.

I'm not seeking to justify the administrator(s)'s action here. I don't see how it is justified.

But part of the reason administrators respond in this kind of CYA way (which, ISTM, this is in part) is because we have become a nation oft too damn man helicopter parents insisting too much that the schools provide protection for their fragile students against any and every damn wrong that might happen to them.

Good ideas always have unintended consequences. And seeking perfection is the enemy of the good.

This girl should be damn mad about what the school did to her for doing the right thing. She shouldn't have been raised to be "fragile". She should have been raised to get righteously pissed and be unafraid of trying to get the rest of us pissed off.

If she is indeed "fragile" because of this injustice, then the responsibility for her fragility lies not with the school for being assholes, it lies with her parents for not instilling in her a sufficient disdain for the opinions and actions of assholes.

IMO.

Where is the common sense. A senior captain of the volleyball team. If she was being looked at for scholarships, the schools actions could easily cost this girl. If she wasn't drinking and no charges were filed against her, I see no grounds for the school to enact any punishment.

But also where is her common sense. If you are going to a party of underage kids and the cops are already there. DON'T PULL IN.
The world needs ditch diggers too Danny!!!

just told my wife she should be here in london where all the kids just line up and drink near the river and the cops dont care ...

One of the first things I noticed about england and its disgusting.

If you thought wisconsin was bad for the # of bars and alcys it has; believe me england has it beat by a mile.

The parents of the yobs drinking Stella by the Thames today were drinking Stella by the Thames in 1978 when I was a student there. And I'm betting the parents of the parents were drinking John Courage (Stella not being available yet) there in the 1950s and the parents of the parents of the parents were drinking John Courage in the 1930s. Today's yobs may be more inarticulate and more violent than their great-grandparents (though I wouldn't be so sure of that either), but it's been decades since my favorite city in the world has had a shortage of them.
