When Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers appropriately called out Brewers slugger Ryan Braun in July for lying to Rodgers about PED use, Rodgers said it hadn't been determined whether their restaurant partnership will continue. A determination has now been made:  Braun is out. Via the Associated Press, SURG Restaurant Group will change the name of the...

Kind of a shitty friend, imo.

Maybe he felt sleighted.

Given Rodgers public chastisement about "betrayal", this is completely unsurprising to me. If the business agreement allowed an out, I expected him to take it.

As I said back then, that told me how deep the "friendship" went (or, rather, didn't go).

And breaking business relationships with someone who has shown himself to be of problematic character -- well, that just makes good business sense.

In my opinion, a deep friendship should trump just about any business risk short of "being unable to support one's family". If it doesn't, the friendship wasn't deep at the time the risk arose.

And the number of celebrity "He's a great friend of mine" friendships which aren't deep greatly outnumber those which are.

When it comes to the making of personal choices:
1. Love trumps friendship. If it doesn't, it isn't love, merely attraction, courtesy, or the acquaintance of lust.
2. Friendship trumps business. If it doesn't, it isn't friendship, merely an acquaintance of convenience.
3. Survival trumps business. If it doesn't, you're part of the sick and the dead.

And who they aren't.

If I were Braun, I might have a drink with Aaron Rodgers if we are in the same bar. I might even sincerely smile for the cameras while doing so.

But I wouldn't be inviting him over for grilled steaks and corn-on-the-cob any time soon.

Aaron Rodgers didn't make this decision.

This headline title from PFT is inaccurate.

SURG made the decision, not Aaron Rodgers.

Rodgers deserves no "credit" for this because SURG made the decision, not Rodgers.

Perhaps he did. I dunno.

But, IMO, if he were truly a "friend", he would have. Or he doesn't qualify as a friend, only as a smart business associate.

(Be clear, I'm not saying Rodgers has to keep business relationships with Braun. I just am skeptical it when people buy into celebrities who claim great friendship with each other. What they are people whose celebrity has pushed them into repeated and "friendly" acquaintanceship. And that's all most of their relationships -- like most of anyone's relationships -- ever are.

True friendship IMO is far more profound and far, far more rare. Because true friendship takes serious work and a serious willingness to accept the other's flaws.

A friend still associates with you in public after you've gone bankrupt.
A friend stands by you in court even though he believes you will be (and should be) convicted.
A friend visits you in jail or prison after you have been convicted.
A friend invites you over for steaks after you have been released.
A friend is willing to sit with you in church as well as at the bar.
A friend is willing to give you $500 when he knows you'll never pay it back.
Even if he has to get a cash advance at 20% to do so.
A friend is willing to sit with you at the hospital for hours as your parent or spouse or child lies dying.
A friend is willing to be seen hanging out with you even though your boss, and the same boss who just fired him, is the one doing the seeing.
A friend puts you above his public reputation.
A friend doesn't just do things for you. He does the *hard* things for you.

IMO.

I don't question they consulted with Rodgers, most surely they did, but to say Rodgers had any final say in the matter I feel is absurd to assume for ANY business that relies on customers.

If Braun was a good friend, he would come out and end that business relationship himself. Or at least make the statement that under the circumstances, he decided to take a step back for the time being.

That said, Arodge could come out and say BRAUN MADE A MISTAKE, BUT HE'S STILL MY FRIEND. Or words to that effect. Dude was going out of his way defending him in the media initially.

Kind of like the way Favre turned his back on Chmura after the incident. Well, we later found out Favre wasn't too different.
