Quite simply put, he is a Green Bay Packers player. What more do you need?

We're just so proud of him here in Jacksonville, Florida. I am a native New Yorker who moved to Jax in '00. I was once a sports radio personality covering HS, college and pro football, even middle school and have had the opportunity to see the true side of players from the area.

Sam has a truly unique story, which I have left some out because I felt it would have been better told by him.

Part of his unique story is his father is from Ghana, Africa. His mom is American. Sam has always worked hard for everything and things were not always easy. This guy played HS football and had three jobs, including Zaxby's (which he did not even know Clay Matthews was a spokesman!); he also worked at a car wash in the unforgiven Jax heat and humidity!

Sam has taken trips to his father's native land of Ghana several times and has a true connection to the area. Sam has always wanted to start a non profit to help the children of Ghana in getting shoes and other necessities that we take for granted. Sam has believed in hard work and has never asked someone else for something he could work and get himself. Sam also takes care of his large family and his 4 year old daughter, which he should.

He has always been genuine and respectful even when he screwed up! There are very few if any people you could find that would have a bad thing to say about Sam. Our small Jax city may not be great in NFL football but we support those who have come up through the system and made good; Leon Washington, Marcus Thomas, Sam Barrington and many others just from our Jax community.

Finally, what makes Sam special outside of now being a part of the NFL fraternity, is his father owns a multi-million dollar company in Ghana. With that being the case, Sam has always been his own man and has busted his butt for his family. I know what some of you may be thinking. Well, no, the differences in culture may have been the reason for whatever the relationship WAS between he and his father. What I do know is as grown men, Sam and his father are very close.

P.S. Amazingly, when Sam made his announcement to go to USF (Which was covered by every station in Jax, for he was the #1 prospect in Jax in '09), his father flew in from Ghana. When he saw the hundreds of people fawning over his son, he had no idea why! Obviously, soccer is the game of choice in Ghana and much of the world.

I hope that gives a better perspective on the depths of Sam. He does not have to be a special NFL player, although I believe he will some day. However, I would bet my lastdolllar that if the NFL did not work out, he won't be among the 78% of former players in dire financial straits after the lights go out.

Firstcoast1, thanks for the backstory on Barrington. Sounds like a great guy.

sschind, it was his play on the field that made me a fan.

Barrington has the size and speed you look for in a MLB. Add to that the kid consistently made plays, with authority. You see the confidence he has in getting into position and finishing. That is pretty refreshing coming from a late round pick.

Watching him play made me think we would have little to no drop off should he need to start, and actually may be a better player with time than some of our starters. Remember what it was like watching Bishop languish behind Bennett? Kind of the same thing. His talent looks legit, and that is what has me excited about him making the 53. He will be a very good player for us. May prove to be a late round steal.

I do recall stories about a player with the Ghana ties. I just didn't associate the name with the story.

I haven't been able to watch much of the preseason games so his play did not stand out for me I guess.

Lets hope he continues his success.

Wasn't former Packer's running back Samkon Gado from Ghana?

dfosterf (30-Jan) : So eeri
Mucky Tundra (30-Jan) : Now that's a thought, maybe they're looking at the college ranks? Maybe not head coaches but DC/assistant DCs with league experience?
beast (30-Jan) : College Coaches wouldn't want that publicly, as it would hurt recruiting and they might not get the job.
beast (30-Jan) : I thought they were supposed to publicly announce them, at least the NFL ones. Hafley was from college, so I believe different rules.
Mucky Tundra (30-Jan) : Who knows who they're interviewing? I mean, nobody knew about Hafley and then out of nowhere he was hired
beast (30-Jan) : I wonder what's taking so long with hiring a DL coach, 2 of the 3 known to interview have already been hired elsewhere.
Zero2Cool (27-Jan) : Packers coach Matt LaFleur hires Luke Getsy as senior assistant, extends Rich Bisaccia's deal
Zero2Cool (27-Jan) : Chiefs again huh? I guess another Super Bowl I'll be finding something else to do.

dfosterf (27-Jan) : Happy Birthday Dave!
Mucky Tundra (27-Jan) : happy birthday dhazer
TheKanataThrilla (26-Jan) : Exactly buck...Washington came up with the ball. It is just a shitty coincidence one week later
buckeyepackfan (26-Jan) : I forgot, they corrected the call a week later. Lol btw HAPPY BIRTHDAY dhazer!
buckeyepackfan (26-Jan) : That brings up the question, why wasn't Nixon down by contact? I think that was the point Kanata was making.
buckeyepackfan (26-Jan) : Turnovers rule, win the turnover battle, win the game.
packerfanoutwest (26-Jan) : well, he was
TheKanataThrilla (26-Jan) : Eagles down by contact on the fumble....fuck you NFL
Mucky Tundra (26-Jan) : I think this games over

packerfanoutwest (26-Jan) : that being said, The Ravens are the Browns
packerfanoutwest (26-Jan) : Browns, Dolphins have longest AFC Championship droughts
packerfanoutwest (26-Jan) : As of today, Cowboys have longest NFC Championship drought,
beast (26-Jan) : Someone pointed out, with Raiders hiring Carroll, the division games between Carroll and Jim Harbaugh are back on (who can whine more games)
beast (26-Jan) : I'm confused, Pete Carroll and Brian Schottenheimer? When Todd Monken, Joe Brady, Kellen Moore, Kliff Kingsbury and Zac Robinson are availab
Zero2Cool (25-Jan) : Any reason I'm catching a shot here about my intelligence?
Martha Careful (25-Jan) : thank you Mucky for sticking up for me
Martha Careful (25-Jan) : some of those people are smarter than you zero. However Pete Carroll is not
Mucky Tundra (24-Jan) : Rude!
beast (24-Jan) : Martha? 😋
Zero2Cool (24-Jan) : Raiders hired someone from the elderly home.
dfosterf (24-Jan) : I'm going with a combination of the two.
beast (24-Jan) : Either the Cowboys have no idea what they're doing, or they're targeting their former OC, currently the Eagles OC
Zero2Cool (23-Jan) : Fake news. Cowboys say no
Zero2Cool (23-Jan) : Mystery candidate in the Cowboys head coaching search believed to be Packers ST Coordinator Rich Bisaccia.
beast (23-Jan) : Also why do both NYC teams have absolutely horrible OL for over a decade?
beast (23-Jan) : I wonder why the Jets always hire defensive coaches to be head coach
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Still HC positions available out there. I wonder if Hafley pops up for one
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Trent Baalke is out as the Jaguars GM.
dfosterf (22-Jan) : Jeff Hafley would have been a better choice, fortunately they don't know that. Someone will figure that out next off season
