The New York Jets cut their roster from 90 down to 76 today, forcing head coach Rex Ryan to make decisions he said “were the hardest in my career in this job.”
A solemn Ryan talked about the cut-down decisions at a press conference.
“Telling a guy he doesn’t have a job, after he has sweated and bled for you, has always been the hardest part of this job for me,” said Ryan. “It’s excruciating. But this year was a unique set of circumstances because there’s not a single player on this roster who deserves to not get cut. The fact that I have to keep any of these shitballs, let alone more than 70 of them, is depressing beyond words. These guys don’t belong on a Division III college roster. It’s embarrassing any of them are on a roster of a team purported to be in the National Football League.”
Ryan said he initially went through his roster as he normally does before the first round of cuts, evaluating the performance of each player, weighing their pros and cons, but quickly came to the realization that they “all f–king suck and should all be cut. But I’m not allowed to cut everyone. We have to field a team, no matter how bad it might be.”
So Ryan then decided to write the names of the 90 Jets players on 90 different pieces of paper. The strips were then placed into a helmet and 14 names were drawn. They were the players who were then cut.
“To a man, each guy told me when I cut him that they are going to retire from football because ‘if I can’t make the Jets, I can’t make any team,’” said Ryan. “And they’re right.”
Ryan says that for the next round of cuts, he is going to put 50 extra slips of paper in the helmet, all with “Mark Sanchez” written on them.
