GREEN BAY — Not only does it look like wide receivers Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb will be ready for the Sept. 8 opener at San Francisco, but the Green Bay Packers' two top wide receivers may even participate in Thursday night's preseason finale at Kansas City.

That said, both believe it will be even more valuable to take part in practice this week, since the starters aren't expected to see much action against the Chiefs.

"You're going to get more reps in practice, you're going to get more looks in practice, you're going to get more balls in practice," Nelson said. "That, to me, is the more important thing than going to Kansas City and getting three, five plays or whatever it might be.

"If it was a regular-season game and stuff, we definitely could be going. But we've still got to be smart and see what happens."

Nelson underwent a nerve-release procedure on his knee on Aug. 6 and has been sidelined since. Cobb has dealt with a biceps injury throughout training camp and has been limited since Aug. 13, when he pushed through a full practice despite being in obvious pain with the injury.

Nelson and Cobb suited up for practice but didn't do a ton of work, although they did catch passes from quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

"We feel good. And we'll keep working at it," Nelson said after Sunday's practice, which was essentially an extended jogthrough in shorts and helmets. "We didn't do much today, so with Randall and I not practicing last week, for me a couple weeks, and not doing much today, we didn't want to lose a day of conditioning. So we just figured we'd get some extra work in and (Rodgers) wanted to throw some balls, so we did."

The Packers are scheduled to practice in pads Monday and Tuesday.

"I think it's just getting back into the groove of things, getting back into competition, competing with my teammates and going up against an actual body and not doing things on air," Cobb said. "I'm playing free-minded. I'm not going to have any worries whenever I do play, I'm going to make sure I'm at a level where I can go out and compete and perform and not have any worries about anything with my body."

Cobb, who led the Packers in receptions (80) and receiving yards (954) last year in his second NFL season, said he needs the work because he's not a veteran player who can get away with missing so much time and then be ready for regular-season play.

"I'm still a young guy, I'm still trying to get better. So I don't think I can ever be at a place in my career where missing time is OK," Cobb said. "Maybe later on when my body is hurting a lot and I'm getting older in age, but I'm a young guy and I've got a lot of things to work on and a lot of growing to do."

Cobb said the team will work on punt and kickoff returns in practice Monday and that he will get some turns there. Whether he's the Packers' returner against the 49ers is still up in the air, though, as the coaches try to find a suitable replacement so he can focus on the offense.

"You still have to go out there and ride that bike to stay in that groove. So getting back there and returning some balls is going to be important to, just making sure I'm staying on top of my fundamentals," Cobb said. "We know what we're trying to do, it's just important for all of us to do our part."

I know its just something that you would hope a young player would say but still, to have Cobb say he is still developing and can't afford the missed time is sounds like he has the right attitude.

I got really used to the WR depth we had over the past couple of years. We need these guys back and we need them healthy.

Question is how well can these WRs step up?

While Nelson and Cobb are both good, I don't think either one has been good as Jennings at his peak (yet), I think both have the potential to be there, but Nelson are to stay healthy and seemingly get a bit more of an on field attitude and Cobb is still raw, and needs to learn and grow more on the outside routes.

Though I really think Jones and Boykins are the types that will never be the most talented but they're rock solid and they're going to make plays and could start on some teams as a #2 type (yes Boykins still has to do it for a season but I see the potential there).

After that... big ? for me...

2012-2013 Jones, Cobb, Nelson, Boykin and Ross

Are just as solid as

2011 Jennings, Driver, Nelson, Jones and Cobb

Jones is much better since 2012, Jordy stays healthy and he will be just as solid as he was in 2011, Cobb is only going to get better, Boykin and Ross are at that point where they should show a big jump in improvement.

The names have changed but with The Packers QB the squad will be just as dangerous.

Im more concerned about getting nelson and cobb back vs san fran then Williams (cb) -

I think our your DBs will try hard out there trying to still win a decent spot.

IMO we need the help at WR our lesser experienced guys just cant cut it atm ... having nelson jones and cobb and finley on the field at one time should keep any defense on their toes; and stick in lacy and we got em really reeling.

Zero2Cool (2-Jan) : Or we got better and by we I mean everyone except me
Zero2Cool (2-Jan) : We have about six that by percent would have won nearly any season. I guess 2024 was predictable 🤷
Zero2Cool (2-Jan) : You can check previous seasons. I quick did it and don't think anyone hit 70% before
dfosterf (2-Jan) : Hats off to the Beast
dfosterf (2-Jan) : I'm at 71.76% in pick 'em. 2nd place. Beast is at a flat 75% 9 games ahead. That 75% has got to be unprecedented this late in the season
beast (2-Jan) : I don't care deeply, just want some good entertaining games
Zero2Cool (2-Jan) : BTW, not serious.
Zero2Cool (2-Jan) : You don't care about it either!!!!

Mucky Tundra (2-Jan) : outside of Texas-Arizona St, it's been a snoozefest
beast (2-Jan) : I expect Georgia will change that tomorrow, but we'll have to wait and see. If they do, then only Big 10 and SEC are left.

Mucky Tundra (1-Jan) : I guess I need a new sig Pic. Boo

beast (31-Dec) : I want to them chant some songs for Daniel Whelan

Zero2Cool (31-Dec) : Packers. Steelers. Ireland. 2025. Reports say.
Zero2Cool (30-Dec) : Matt Lafleur on if Jaire will play again this season. "Yeah I don't know... he's been dealing with swelling."
Mucky Tundra (30-Dec) : After the way they played for most of the game yesterday, I don't see how you can sit anyone for the whole game
Zero2Cool (30-Dec) : I'd say play everyone. Going into playoffs at 7th seed on two game lose streak - yucky
Zero2Cool (30-Dec) : Do the Packers have any best players?
beast (30-Dec) : Play or Rest*
beast (30-Dec) : Should the Packers play or free their best players vs the Bears?
Zero2Cool (30-Dec) : Packers should be 3 - 2 in the Division. Bonkers being swept by both Lions and Vikings. yikes
go.pack.go. (30-Dec) : All crazy stuff…and good point beast
beast (30-Dec) : Packers should be 0-5 in the division, can't say I saw that coming, even 1-4
Zero2Cool (30-Dec) : Sam Darnold 35 TD's ... another one
Zero2Cool (30-Dec) : Baker Mayfield, 39 TD's ... can't say I saw that one
Zero2Cool (30-Dec) : No matter who is playing as 7th, I think we want them to win. Get rid of 2nd seed haha
go.pack.go. (30-Dec) : That would be dhazer who was rooting for Minnesota
beast (30-Dec) : Well, Commanders are currently the 6th seed and Packers the 7th
beast (30-Dec) : Who was it in Chat, that wanted the Vikings to win (because Lions fans upset them) because Packers could not lose the 6th seed?
beast (30-Dec) : If Falcons win, Packers stay as the 6th seed and Falcons lead the NFCS, if they lose, Commanders 6th and Bucs take NFCS lead
beast (30-Dec) : Win or Loss, the NFCS is going down to week 18
Mucky Tundra (30-Dec) : if the Falcons win, how does that affect the overall NFC playoff picture? Does it mean that the NFC South comes down to week 18?
beast (30-Dec) : If Commanders win, the Packers drop to the 7th seed
beast (29-Dec) : Taylor still at it!
beast (29-Dec) : Colts get the ball and fumble turn over
