Couldn't ever really put my finger on why I dislike the Lakers as I do, other than they remind me of the Yankees and try to buy championships. I think this was mentioned to me sometime before, perhaps even on the site here.

Granted, they started off as the Detroit Gems, but they spent more than a decade as the Minneapolis Lakers.

Life makes sense again.

Like with most successful franchises there are certain things that set people off...compare them to the Patriots (to keep a football theme).

1. The arrogance of their fan base over their success.
2. The fair weather fans that come out of the woodwork to suddenly start sporting their gear.
3. The smugness of the franchise
4. The low character of some of the principles
5. The perception that the franchise is somehow entitled to success because of its history
6. The love of America for the underdog. A successful franchise always seems to make us root for the other guy to beat them.

I can't say I know many Patriots fans, but as a franchise, I've liked them ever since they changed their logo with Bill Parcels, or maybe it was when Kraft bought them?

I have followed the Lakers since the 60's. Was always frustrated that LA would lose to Bowstun all the time. Bill Russell ate them for lunch every single time.

I really enjoyed the Lakers of the 80's and Showtime. Magic and his smile was infectious. I was even glad When Kobe came on board.

But I have to tell you the past 5 years or so has been like getting my teeth drilled without any pain killer. Kobe "raping" the woman in his hotel room was the beginning of this nightmare for me. Kobe forcing O'Neal out. Jackson as HC circus. Now Dwight Howard crying that nobody in LA loved him is almost more than I can bear.

Add to that the NBA players who coast through most of the game, most of the season and flop more than FIFA, The non calls for traveling, players "getting their signature move" once they establish themselves as a star. The crap talk all the time, really makes it impossible to watch.

BUT if LA shows up for the finals and they are not all on oxygen and in wheelchairs I will hope for another Championship.

As for fair weather fans you can not point to a single franchise in any sport at any level of play that does not pick up more fans when they are winning.
