Green Bay --- Green Bay didn't hesitate in giving big money to Aaron Rodgers and Clay Matthews. But for now, general manager Ted Thompson apparently isn't going to do the same thing with nose tackle B.J. Raji.

Good! That is exactly the way I was hoping they would handle the Raji situation. As of now, he does NOT deserve max money, not even close. Make him play and prove he is tough, not just a big ball of blubber. Some say he got worn out from not being in a rotation - and will do better this year with either he and Pickett for one spot or he, Pickett, and Boyd for two spots. I am very doubtful about that, but who knows, maybe that plus the motivation of a contract year might make him play like something other than the colossal disappointment he has always been IMO.

If anything, I was hoping his average season last year would lead to a reasonable contract extension; one that paid him for what he was worth, and not more. The Packers will miss Raji if he leaves. Average to above average (and at times almost unstoppable) players that have Raji's combinations of size, speed, and strength are incredibly difficult to come by. Not to mention that he's relatively durable and plays through injuries. Availability anyone? Ted Thompson hasn't exactly proven he's great at drafting defensive linemen, anyway. How confident could one be that Ted Thompson could easily replace Raji? I know I'm not confident in that. I'd rather have Raji at a fair but reasonable contract and add some beasts around him (hopefully like the Packers did in this most recent draft). Raji can be very effective with a good to great player beside of him, especially in a nice rotation.

That sounds good to me - getting him for a lesser but fair amount, but apparently the Packers have decided otherwise - and by waiting, undoubtedly somebody will bid him way up. I never liked Raji at DE, and at Nose Guard, he is not so irreplaceable. Maybe Boyd or maybe some other more traditional slower but tougher NG would do better. As was said, Raji is a penetrator, which means a lot of near misses but also fairly easy to elude.

BJ Raji is going to have an incredible season. Thank you Datone Jones and Josh Boyd.

MM made a comment at the end of last year about the coaches being too focused on proper this or that.... and not enough about going out there and just kicking some ass. (not how MM put it but it basically sums it up) And I think that's very well could help Raji because it seems like the more techine stuff he does the worse he gets... he needs to be set free and just ball... that's when he's at his best.

I think they ether need to let the NT go up the field more often scheme wise or put Pickett there as the starting NT. Pickett did a very good job as the starting NT when ever Raji misses a game, like I think he did against the Texans (a run first team).
