The difference in pay is not that great, but on the upside: if the 6th or 7th round player does pan out, you get him for an extra year on his rookie contract. You get him under contract for 4 years instead of 3 for the undrafted guys.
If a guy had a crystal ball it would have been nice to have drafted Shields in the 6th-7th round and had him under contract already this year. He's still not technically under contract even though he can't play for another NFL team unless the Packers release him.
So if they have a hunch, a feeling, whatever about a guy, I say great, draft him. Who cares if he isn't on any other draft boards.
