You're right, I read that wrong.

But saying someone wouldn't of been drafted by the other 31 teams still upsets me... because to me that's like saying he didn't deserve to be drafted...

There are 7 rounds (8 if you count the 32 comp picks) and there are probably 10 to 15 rounds of guys who have worked their butts off to get to that point and maybe deserve to be drafted and aren't.

Case and point: Did all these players deserve to be skipped over?

Tramon Williams,
C/G Evan Dietrich-Smith
QB Graham Harrell
P Tim Masthay
CB Sam Shields
S M.D. Jennings
LB Jamari Lattimore
G Don Barclay

And to say they (or a rookie who hasn't yet got his shot) don't/didn't deserve to be drafted feels like a huge slap in the face... they deserve the right to be drafted and Plamer got drafted by one team when people didn't think he would. Who's to say there isn't 2 or 3 more teams that wouldn't of taken him in the 7th round?

Weather he turns out any good or not... he worked his butt off to get to that point, the right to get drafted if any team deemed him worthy enough... at least once did.

And the people that say they know he wouldn't of been drafted by another teams are probably the sames one they knew Rodgers would be picked in the top half of the first round. The same ones that knew Lacy wasn't going to fall passed half way of the 2nd round. The same ones that knew the Packers were going to draft a Safety in the top of the 2013 draft.

To add to that, when you get to the sixth and seventh round, you're generally just drafting guys you'd hit first if they were to hit UDFA. Big boards are all over the place in later rounds from team to team and talent is usually not that far apart (except for the guys who dropped because of character concerns).

Whether a player is draftable or not when you hit the back of the sixth and the seventh round is generally a notion I'd throw out the window at that point. You just go with who you have rated higher, even if it's nowhere near the consencus.

There is not a large difference between taking a player in the 6th, 7th rounds or as an UDFA. This is the place to take a few chances and sign players that other teams are not willing to sign. If they fit your scheme and are rated higher on the board than someone else take them.

Unless of course there is a glut/shortage at a particular position and by the time they get to the 6th round there is not a glut of players at any position.

I was saying that the difference in abilities of the players that are taken in the 6th round and those who are UDFA is usually not that large of a difference. Their pay won't be significantly different either.

The difference in pay is not that great, but on the upside: if the 6th or 7th round player does pan out, you get him for an extra year on his rookie contract. You get him under contract for 4 years instead of 3 for the undrafted guys.

If a guy had a crystal ball it would have been nice to have drafted Shields in the 6th-7th round and had him under contract already this year. He's still not technically under contract even though he can't play for another NFL team unless the Packers release him.

So if they have a hunch, a feeling, whatever about a guy, I say great, draft him. Who cares if he isn't on any other draft boards.
