If Crosby had made that kick, would everyone still be questioning McCarthy's decision to run 3 straight times at the end?

Our defense was stopping the Bears all game.

"Nonstopdrivel" wrote:

Yes, but they have an impressive resume of failing to stop last-minute drives. Why risk putting the game back in their hands when it really counted by allowing the bears to tie it with a field goal? It's a heck of a lot hard to drive all the way down the field for a touchdown than three-quarters of the way down the field to field goal range.

That late in the game, why chance a pick by throwing it?

Because you respect your quarterback, who just so happens to be the best red-zone quarterback in the NFL, who hasn't tossed a pick in the red zone all year, enough to put the game in his hands and win it for you. To have him handing it off like a third-stringer when you still have another chance to get a first down and put the game on ice just smacks of disrespect.

If you don't have enough confidence in your QB to win it in the last minute, why should he have any confidence in himself?

The season's already over. Give the kid a chance to make some big plays in clutch situations -- and, if necessary, to make some mistakes. Let him go through the growing pains now when it doesn't count, so he'll be ready to assume the mantle next season when it will count.

Playing the percentages = mediocrity

But like everything else this year, it all went wrong.

Cheesey, in what game this year has our kicker made a critical kick either late in the game or just before the end of the 1st half? He may have done it once but I do not remember when.
Even last year he choked a few times in key situations but we didn't need him to win the game. Mike has to know that he can not count on the kicker to win the game. In a year or two he may be able to step up in the clutch but not now.

I even called the fake punt by the way and I did not see Flynn out on the field.

I also thought they were going to call the fake punt, even though I did not see Flynn on the field. I was amazed that the Bears were not ready for it when it happened, or at least didn't call time-out.

That'd be your right, but his decision would've led us to a win.

At the end of the day, as Holmgren would say you have to take the sure points each and every time.

MM was doing that, well at least a FG is surer than attempting to throw for a TD.

We're not talking about a 50+ yarder or something, we're talking about a FG around 35 yards. That's very makable.

If Crosby had made that kick, would everyone still be questioning McCarthy's decision to run 3 straight times at the end? No, because it's what EVERY OTHER TEAM would have done. It just got blocked, bad luck, bad playing pain and simple. Sure, your kicker sucked earlier but it doesn't mean you do something crazy.

Yes i would have. During the commercials i looked at my wife and said just that. Even if they kick the FG if they run the ball 3 times it is still poor play calling. They did it and lost.

Subtract 17 yards from 35 yards and you have 18. That means we could have obtained another first downs before hitting the end zone. We didn't need to run the ball to burn up the clock -- getting that first down would have taken care of that for us. And it would have put us in prime position to put the game entirely away.

I don't think so.

While you certainly could be more aggressive, there is a time and place for it. I really don't think that would've been the time nad place.

The last trip inside the red-zone for the Packers vs the Bears, Rodgers threw to Driver who was well covered. The Bears LB covering Driver had the ball hit him in the biceps. It was a dangerous throw, one that should've been picked off.

I think at that point in time, it's better to play the odds. Trying a FG is a safer bet than trying for a TD.

Well, to put it in another light, the running plays ran the clock from 1:54 to 24 seconds. Passing plays could put the clock anywhere from 30-1:30 with incompletions stopping the clock. You also have to think about the chance of a tipped pass interception like it happened earlier in the game. Giving the Bears the ball back with our anemic special teams and defense, plus that much time on the clock would probably have guaranteed OT or a win for the Bears anyway.

9-6 in the Packers division is tied for first place.

At least the Jets have a reason to play on Sunday other than to try to keep the Detroit Lions winless.

It's more than Favre, though you like to turn it directly into that. I still don't agree with the Favre move but believe me my list of grievances goes way beyond that. Justin Harrell anyone?

"djcubez" wrote:

First game of the season Miami was ready to win the game against the Jets but what happened? The defense stepped up and made a pick IN THE END ZONE.

Against the Bills this season, the Bills should have ran the clock out but Losman rolled out and lost the football which Ellies returned for a TD in the last two minutes.

If the Packers had defensive stands like this in the end of games we would be in the playoffs.

In a Black and White world that makes sense however there are lots of variables in play.

Perhaps had the Offense controlled the ball more with less 3 and outs, the Defense would have been relieved of some pressure. Perhaps had we had A QB who wasn't gun shy we could have converted some more first downs, controlled the ball, scored more points, and kept the Def. off the field, etc.

I have no desire to debate the Favre issue as the records IMO, speak for themselves. It's not all on Rodgers, alot of it has to do with mismanagement in other areas of the team, however to not explore that aspect is foolish.
