Hayward played all of the cornerback spots while excelling at Vanderbilt, collecting seven interceptions last year as a senior and 15 overall in college - a school record. Still, playing where he is now for Green Bay has been an adjustment.

"In the slot there is so much space, you have to be familiar with formation, variation and concept," Packers receiver Greg Jennings said. "So you have the guy lining up in front of you, you've got the space, you have to look at what he can potentially do. You have to play that area. You can't just play that guy.

"Casey is doing a great job. His ball skills are outstanding. It is impressive to watch him play. I was watching him on the sideline last week and I was talking to Charles saying, 'This kid is going to be good.' I mean, he's instinctive. You have to be instinctive at that position - and a little savvy as well.

"But he studies, he's smart, he understands concepts."

Hayward can't just match up with a receiver man to man like an outside cornerback. He has to read a formation and imagine how the offense might attack his area. He also could be looking at more than one receiver as potential targets for the ball. Playing slot corner means there are all kinds of route combinations a receiver can run, there's more open field to cover, there can be motion to interpret and there can be stack formations that try to create picks on the slot corner.

That's why Hayward, when asked what his No. 1 job requirement was, said simply: film study.

"There, I am making sure I am in the right spot," he said. "I have to make sure I brought the right coverage."

House said another key point to playing the slot is knowing where the help is - from a safety or even a linebacker.

"He's also a natural knee-bender," House said. "Me, I'm not a natural knee-bender, as you can see . . . "

Hayward also is good at running and moving laterally.

it is interesting to read a little more about the slot vs the outside CB.

I did like this article. Half the excitement of football is the strategy of the game.

God this forum has become a place for bitches. We never talk football anymore.

Hayward is rockin so far, and House is going to be a faster, stronger version of Al Harris. Do we even give Tramon his next expensive contract?

As for Shields, he is very good. But he must have pissed of a mafioso somewhere down the line. Dude gets more phantom PI calls than anyone I've ever seen.

Between both Woody and Shields being out, we barely get any calls against us anymore.

Hayward is like the shields of 2010. I'm tellin ya, he will be a big factor in the playoffs when we need a play from the secondary.

Mucky Tundra (7h) : Oh so the refs do know what intentional grounding is
Mucky Tundra (7h) : what the hell was that Goff?! Not much pressure and he just air mails it to Harrison
Mucky Tundra (8h) : They really need to to get rid of the auto first down for illegal contact
Martha Careful (8h) : watching the Vikings and Lions it's understandable why they swept the Packers. So much better product
Mucky Tundra (8h) : Even when GB got pressure he was throwing darts; vs no pressure on that last pass he just air mails an open guy
Zero2Cool (8h) : didn't have guys in his face ... pressure makes difference
Mucky Tundra (8h) : Where was this Darnold vs GB?
Mucky Tundra (8h) : BALL DON'T LIE
Mucky Tundra (8h) : how was that not a safety? Goff throws it at an offensive lineman

Zero2Cool (2-Jan) : Or we got better and by we I mean everyone except me
Zero2Cool (2-Jan) : We have about six that by percent would have won nearly any season. I guess 2024 was predictable 🤷
Zero2Cool (2-Jan) : You can check previous seasons. I quick did it and don't think anyone hit 70% before
dfosterf (2-Jan) : Hats off to the Beast
dfosterf (2-Jan) : I'm at 71.76% in pick 'em. 2nd place. Beast is at a flat 75% 9 games ahead. That 75% has got to be unprecedented this late in the season
beast (2-Jan) : I don't care deeply, just want some good entertaining games
Zero2Cool (2-Jan) : BTW, not serious.
Zero2Cool (2-Jan) : You don't care about it either!!!!
Zero2Cool (2-Jan) : NIL and Portal killed college, no one cares about it.
Mucky Tundra (2-Jan) : outside of Texas-Arizona St, it's been a snoozefest
beast (2-Jan) : I expect Georgia will change that tomorrow, but we'll have to wait and see. If they do, then only Big 10 and SEC are left.
