Green Bay Packers

Best Pick: Safety Jeron McMillian

The Green Bay Packers are in the discussion for which team has had the best production so far from their 2012 draft class. This group is loaded.

First-rounder Nick Perry is starting at outside linebacker. Second-rounder Jerel Worthy is getting major minutes at defensive end. Third-rounder Casey Hayward should be starting opposite Tramon Williams. Fourth-rounder Jeron McMillian has been the best rookie find of the entire class.

The national media hasn't picked up on this yet, but McMillian has been amazing for the Packers' defense. Through four weeks, Pro Football Focus ranks McMillian as the fifth best safety in the NFL. And he was the team's fourth-round pick.

The Packers have outdone themselves with this draft class. And that's saying something.

Grade: A+

I'm a little dissappointed so far with Perry and Worthy but excited about the guys in the backend.
I'm confident that Perry and Worthy will both come around and be productive as they gain experience and confidence.
This was a very good and much needed draft class for the Packers.

I too hoped for a little more from Perry but it is a new position for him so I figure it will take him some time. I think he has faced some injuries issues as well has he not? One thing that makes me smile a bit is that anyone who writes a story can slant it the way they want to justify their position. Technically Perry is the starter but Walden is getting a lot more playing time. I went to football outsiders  to see what their snap counts are. Ignoring the first week when Walden was suspended, Perry was played 74 snaps or 38% of the time. Walden 119 snaps or 61%.

Worthy is more or less where I expected him to be. I would have loved to have him step up and dominate but that wasn't going to happen.

Hayward has been doing fine with what they have asked him to do. I don't see him in week 5 being better than Shields but he can be before it is all done.

I have been very pleased with McMillian. I have no expectations for a 4th round pick in his first year.

Like it has been said before it takes several years to really evaluate a draft.

McMillian has played great! It seems like this kid is always around the ball (reminds me of Nick Collins). Its a good thing when a 4th round draft pick is making that big of an impact.

As for Worthy and Perry. Its not like they are completely sucking it up. I see Worthy (and Daniels) battling every time they are on the field. These guys will continually take strides from season to season. I am anxious to see what kind of player Nick Perry becomes. I think he has the potential to be a poor man's DeMarcus Ware, which alright by me.

Hayward plays the ball extremely well. He swatted a ball down to Jimmy Graham, preventing another possible 3rd down conversion.

The rookies are working hard.

B+ right now.

The secondary has played much better than the line and LB's we drafted. We need a better push up the middle and you'd expect that from Worthy and Daniels. Perry is only using a bull rush move. Which is a good move but can be slow getting to the QB from the OLB position. Upshall is having the same problem in Baltimore. He's going to have to try to make moves to the outside or even far inside so that his bull rush power isn't so predictable.

I think you have to give this group an A when you look at how the defense has improved and how many rookies might be in there on any given play. I remember the last game the announcer pointed out there were five rookies on the field.
It only makes sense with such a high number of young players the D will only get better and could be a real difference maker for us late in the season. Of course, that remains to be seen, but compared to last year when there just didn't seem to be any answer these young guys are sure hanging in there and there is valid hope they can improve.

The really good defensive teams are good because most all of the players are veterans that have played together for awhile. One or two imports but mostly intact. The Packers don't have that right now but with a little patience and an occasional Brees in their face they will get there.

Worthy and Perry will be OK.
It's very rare that a rookie can come in and be a force right away. I think by the half way point in the season, they will be making big plays.
There's a learning curve, and they have been thrown into the fire right away.

Zero2Cool (8h) : Still HC positions available out there. I wonder if Hafley pops up for one
Zero2Cool (8h) : Trent Baalke is out as the Jaguars GM.
dfosterf (10h) : Jeff Hafley would have been a better choice, fortunately they don't know that. Someone will figure that out next off season
Zero2Cool (11h) : Aaron Glenn Planning To Take Jets HC Job
dfosterf (12h) : Martha- C'est mon boulot! 😁
Zero2Cool (12h) : Thank you
wpr (12h) : Z, glad you are feeling better.
wpr (12h) : My son and D-I-L work for UM. It's a way to pick on them.
Zero2Cool (12h) : Thank you. I rarely get sick, and even more rarely sick to the point I can't work.
wpr (12h) : Beast- back to yesterday, I CAN say OSU your have been Michigan IF the odds of making the playoffs were more urgent.
dfosterf (12h) : Glad to hear you are feeling a bit better.
Zero2Cool (13h) : I've been near death ill last several days, finally feel less dead and site issues.
Zero2Cool (13h) : It is a big deal. This host is having issues. It's frustrating.
Martha Careful (13h) : just kidding...it was down
Martha Careful (13h) : you were blocked yesterday, due to a a recalcitrant demeanor yesterday in the penalty box for a recalcitrant demeanor
dfosterf (14h) : Was that site shutdown on your end or mine? No big deal, just curious
beast (21-Jan) : That way teams like Indiana and SMU don't make the conference championships by simply avoiding all the other good teams in their own confere
beast (21-Jan) : Also, with these "Super Conferences" instead of a single conference champion, have 4 teams make a Conference playoffs.
beast (21-Jan) : Also in college football, is a bye week a good or bad thing?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : The tournament format was fine. Seeding could use some work.
beast (21-Jan) : You can't assume Ohio State would of won the Michigan game...
beast (21-Jan) : Rankings were 1) Oregon 2) Georgia 3) Texas 4) Penn State 5) Notre Dame 6) Ohio State, none of the rest mattered
wpr (21-Jan) : Texas, ND and OSU would have been fighting for the final 2 slots.
wpr (21-Jan) : Oregon and Georgia were locks. Without the luxury of extra playoff berths, Ohios St would have been more focused on Michigan game.
wpr (21-Jan) : Zero, no. If there were only 4 teams Ohio State would have been one of them. Boise St and ASU would not have been selected.
Zero2Cool (21-Jan) : So that was 7 vs 8, that means in BCS they never would made it?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : A great game. Give ND credit for coming back, although I am please with the outcome.
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : FG to make it academic
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : and there's the dagger
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : ooooo 8 point game with 4 minutes to go!
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : ooooooooohhhhhh he missed!
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Ooooo that completion makes things VERY interesting
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Game not over yet
beast (21-Jan) : Oh yeah, Georgia starting quarterback season ending elbow injury
beast (21-Jan) : Sadly something happened to Georgia... they should be playing in this game against Ohio State
beast (21-Jan) : I thought Ohio State and Texas were both better than Notre Dame & Penn State
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Notre Lame getting rolled
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : Ohio State just got punched in the gut. Lets see how they respond
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Notre Lame vs the Luckeyes, bleh
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Oh snap!!!
Zero2Cool (21-Jan) : Even Stevie Wonder can see that.
Zero2Cool (21-Jan) : Nah, you see Lions OC leaving to be HC of Bears is directly related to Packers.
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : ohhhhhhh Zero is in TROUBLE
packerfanoutwest (21-Jan) : Zero, per your orders, check Bearshome, not packershome
Zero2Cool (20-Jan) : Then he'll land with another team and flourish.
Zero2Cool (20-Jan) : Ben going to Bears. He'll be out in 3 years.
Mucky Tundra (20-Jan) : what's so funny?
Zero2Cool (20-Jan) : BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Zero2Cool (20-Jan) : Bears are finalizing a deal to hire Ben Johnson as their head coach. (via @tompelissero )
Mucky Tundra (20-Jan) : Looks like Lions OC Ben Johnson is going to be the Bears coach
