For all the excitement D.J. Smith generated with his sack of Jay Cutler on the Bears’ opening play last Thursday, lost in the Packers’ 23-10 win were the issues the inside linebacker appeared to have matching up with Chicago running back Matt Forte in coverage.

Considering Forte has amassed more than 50 receptions in each of his four NFL seasons, he presents a tall task for any defending linebacker, but still produced two of the Bears’ most productive offensive plays at Smith’s expense.

The first came in the second quarter on second-and-15 when he beat Smith for a 22-yard catch. Forte also hauled in another reception for 15 yards on third-and-five before exiting in the third quarter with an ankle injury.

According to Pro Football Focus, Cutler managed only 126 passing yards in the game, but roughly half of that came on completions in Smith’s direction, including a 21-yard touchdown pass to Kellen Davis in the fourth quarter over the reach of the undersized Smith.

Smith played more aggressively than he did against San Francisco with four tackles and two other quarterback hurries to complement his sack, but one-on-one coverage situations with premier threats will be necessary at times, as well.

“I think D.J.’s fine. He’ll be fine,” said Capers on Friday. “If you see him too much in those situations, then I’ve got to be aware of that. You can’t help everybody out. Obviously, we’re trying to make sure that Marshall didn’t have the type of day he had the week before, when he was targeted 15 times and had nine receptions for 119 yards. We know how much Cutler likes to go to him, and a big part of our game plan was to try to take him away. You can’t take everybody away, so D.J. was in a lot of one-on-one coverage situations.”

I still can't believe we bracketed Marshall as well as we did. And everyone else covered their assignments well giving Cutler a lot of problems. Kudos to everyone! Group hug!

Always room for improvement which I think DJ Smith has a lot of doing. Playing well enough at the moment and covering that big loss from Des Bishop's absence.

In reality it is difficult to do all things well. There are very few LB who can rush the QB, defend the run AND drop back into pass protection.
Smith does a decent job. Can he improve? Even HoF players have room to improve somewhere.

If smith was only faster, he would make a good hybrid safety/LBer.

Our defense puts a lot of pressure on the ILB, especially with the loss of Collins last year. Nick was so good at being able to get from sideline to sideline we often were able to keep our other safety up to help in coverage over the middle. It is also a big reason our pass coverage suffered last year. When you don't have the confidence that your help will be there, it is hard to play aggressive.

We still have that same problem now. We are not able to help our ILB in coverage, so they get beat up by backs and TEs across the middle.
The world needs ditch diggers too Danny!!!

Mucky Tundra (9h) : Now that's a thought, maybe they're looking at the college ranks? Maybe not head coaches but DC/assistant DCs with league experience?
beast (10h) : College Coaches wouldn't want that publicly, as it would hurt recruiting and they might not get the job.
beast (10h) : I thought they were supposed to publicly announce them, at least the NFL ones. Hafley was from college, so I believe different rules.
Mucky Tundra (10h) : Who knows who they're interviewing? I mean, nobody knew about Hafley and then out of nowhere he was hired
beast (13h) : I wonder what's taking so long with hiring a DL coach, 2 of the 3 known to interview have already been hired elsewhere.
