We are now, as of about the time the Packers misery ended yesterday, "officially" on standbye evacuation notice. Which simply means to everyone in our subdivision....wait until you see the flames, then grab your truck, dog, and maybe the wife, and get the hell out.
The homes and businesses in the canyon just south of us are on a Stage 1 evacuation notice, which means if it goes to stage 3 (they tend to skip stage 2 out here), you've got 5 minutes to grab what you can and clear out or they (whoever "they" are) will ticket you. WTF??
A young forest service guy came around yesterday afternoon and was spreading the word of the impending doom. I don't think a whole hell of a lot of people listened to him. I asked him where he was from and he said Kansas...near Wichita. I looked around for Dorothy and Toto, but all I saw was ugly green forest service fire trucks. He had never been on fires in the mountains and he was amazed at how fast they travel and huge they can get.
He finally said, "I get the idea that most of you have been through this before." No shit, Charlie!
Anyway, he said to be ready to get out on a moments notice, but he didn't think we would have to leave as the main finger of the fire is stalled on a rocky slope, and they intend to really hit the northeast flank today. Hit it with what?? To smokey and windy for the tankers to fly today and helicopter water drops are like pissing in the Grand Canyon and trying to fill it up.
Gonna get interesting in the next 24-36 hours.
