Capers is comparing this guy to the great Sam Mills. I know I was impressed with how he played against the Giants in the regular season when he got the start. Does anybody give him a chance at major playing time this season, and maybe even supplant Hawk next year.

Cutting Hawk this year saves us nothing, but if Smith is as good as advertised, I have no idea why we need to pay Hawk big money if Smith can do the job.

If D.J. Smith is better than A.J. Hawk, he should get more playing time, regardless of salary.

Here's the deal. With the offenses out there now, including us, you need more athletic play from linebackers and cover guys. Hawk is a good and at times very good player, but you know, there is a reason why the hair stays cut and he lost some weight. We keep him but he needs to shape up and be more athletic out there against the tough matchups we see in this league week in and week out.

He's an instinctive player that tackles well, so I suspect he’ll replace Hawk someday. When does this happen? I'm not sure. I think it's sooner than people think, though much of this depends on the defense’s early-season level of play. They may shake things up if they struggle out of the gate.

Smith today looks much like Hawk in college.. comfortable and confident in his instincts.

Hawk is a solid NFL player.. has been very much consistent over his career.. but his style of play in the NFL is too conservative to be a impact player. More of a read and react type player.. not a enforcer.

BTW.. he looks a ton less bulky this season.. maybe that will allow him to put his athletic talent to better use and turn up the aggressiveness some.

Trust me.. he has to know Bishop is ahead of him and the wolves for playing time are nipping at his heels in Smith and some of the young bucks.

Playing time is the motivation for true football players.. the ones that love the game... I believe Hawk to be one.
