What an idiot I can be.

Last night around 8 pm I turned the outside lights on for my wife. She was coming home from her mother's place. She had just spent the week with her mom helping her out after knee replacement surgery. It was getting close to sunset and she doesn't like coming home in the dark. No problem with this. She got home within 30 mins and I helped her bring her things into the house. I should point out that she can't park her car in the garage as it is full of stuff because we are in the process of remodeling the bathroom.

About 10 pm I decided to go get something to eat from the freezer in the garage. As I stood at the front door I could see 100s and 100s of bugs around the lights. One of the lights is not more than 2 feet from the door. I should have stayed where I was. The door from the house into the garage was blocked from the garage side. I should have pushed the stuff out of the way. I should have gotten something to eat from the frig in the kitchen. I should have just gone to bed without eating anything more. ANYTHING would have been better than what I did.

I went out the front door, opened the main garage door. Shut it down. Got some food went out the side door to the garage, shutting off both the garage lights and the outside lights at the same time and then went back into the house through the front door. Even at that point if I would have removed the junk from in front of the door that goes from the garage into the house it would have been fine. But no, I had to go back in through the front door because I am an idiot.

I didn't realize it at the time but at least 200 bugs came in with me. Over the next hour I killed a couple of mosquitoes. My wife said she killed one. I look up at the ceiling and saw dozens and dozens of mosquitoes on the ceiling and buzzing the living room lights.

It is 11 pm. All I want to do is to go to bed but I know I can't. I go back to the garage to get a can of Raid. THIS time I shove the stuff that is blocking the garage door out of my way. The can of Raid is for wasps. I don't have much of a choice. I simply can't kill that many mosquitoes with a fly swatter. So I spray the stuff on the ceiling soaking them every time I squirt. It drips down and lands on everything. Couch, tables, floors, my laptop. Everything. That gets a lot of them. I didn't realize it but we had spider webs along the edges of the ceiling and walls. Well I knew we had some. I didn't know we had THAT many. Those webs must have caught 1/4 to 1/3 of the mosquitoes. While my wife mopped up the bug spray off the floor I got a fly swatter and started to kill the rest of them. Or at least as many as I could.

I worked on this for an hour and a half. I killed over 100 of them myself. Blood marks all over the ceiling and walls. The fly swatter was breaking off in chunks by the time I was done. I was wiping the swatter off in order to keep from squishing the dead bugs back on the walls in another spot. I have not seen that many mosquitoes by our house before. Usually this time of year we get something the people in town call a river bug or a river fly. I would have ignored them as they die off in a day or two.

As I looked at all the bug carcases on the ceiling and walls and all the blood marks I realize we will have to scrub them down before we paint this Fall. We plant to "popcorn" the ceilings at that time too but i don't want that bug crap there when we do.

Even now after wiping off the computer last night i can feel the residue on the keys and smell the bug spray in the air. It will probably take me a week to get rid of this mess. All for a lousy box of Girls Scout cookies. And they weren't even the good ones. Just a box of Trefoil Short Breads.

Am I stupid or what?

Applaud for the story. Sorry, but that kind of thing sounds so familiar. There are so many times when I've taken the "avoid shit" approach, only to turn out to have six times as much shit to deal with before I'm done. And haven't had "late night wanna get to bed" to justify it either.

So, you're not an idiot. Just an everyday sort of putz.

Re: mosquitos. Good side of this "drought" is that we haven't had as many mosquitos as usual here. I expect we'll pay with more box elder bugs come fall. As to why you've got more this year, I'd look around for unexpected places of extra standing water near hose hydrants, under bushes, under eave troughs, etc. I swear, I find new places every year when it rains.
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
