Well, until that happens, all the talk about the Packers being a cold-weather team is so much blather, as far as I'm concerned. The moment they walk off the field, they're bundled in very expensive-looking sleeping bags. Plus they're huddled around some serious blast furnaces. A cold-weather team they are not. Just a team that plays in the cold.

McCarthy has said that they practice indoors because they can get more accomplished. Maybe this is true, in which case the modern game may be too complicated to give cold weather teams the same advantages they used to have.

But I suspect that mostly it's just a case of the team not being as good as it used to be. I don't think Holmgren had them practice in the cold very often, if at all. At this point I would settle for any kind of home field advantage, whether or not it had anything to do with cold weather. Sometimes I think the team comes out tight in home games, as if they are weighed down by all the history, rather than energized by it.

Fascinating analysis, Greg C. Particularly your last statement. I can see how an argument could be made that the tradition of Lambeau Field is in fact more of a burden than an inspiration.

well you know what? maybe we should send a petition to the packers management to get them to practice out side and not use heater...end sarcasm (sorta)

Interesting you should say this, CaliforniaCheez. I was just talking to my wife about this before the game. It's ridiculous to prattle on about the Packers being a cold-weather team when they practice almost exclusively indoors. If anything, they're at a disadvantage when they step onto the field because they're no more used to the cold than their opponents.

If the Packers organization wants to return the formidable homefield advantage to Lambeau Field that it enjoyed in the 1990s, the team needs to start doing regular cold-weather training. Until that happens, the Lambeau Field mystique is a load of bollocks.

With all due respect, bigfog, what does that have anything to do with what I said? If anything, it supports my point: the homefield advantage this team enjoyed during the Holmgren era had little or nothing to do with its being a "cold-weather team" and was attributable mostly, if not solely, to the fact it was a great team overall.

In the 1990s, they trained the same way they do now - once a week outdoors.

Good point -- I phrased my statement very poorly. I feel embarrassed now.

What I meant to say is if they want to claim that the formidable homefield advantage they enjoyed in the 1990s was because they're a cold-weather team, they need to start doing regular cold-weather training.

Ever since I visited the indoor training facility in my early teens and saw how WARM it is inside, I've never understood why people considered it an advantage to the Packers to play outdoors in the winter.

No worries.

I tend to agree with you though. They need to be outside more. I think the reason why they aren't right now is because the practice field isn't heated and it freezes. That's a bad excuse, but what can you do. They do need to be outside.

I was really pissed off last year when McCarthy, in anticipation of the NFC title game, didn't practice outdoors but instead used "frozen balls"

Lombardi must have turned over in his grave.

Why are they afraid of a frozen field? Worried about tweaking ankles and knees?
