I've been spending quite a bit of time researching my families history and was curious, any of you ever do this? If so, what tips or tricks or websites or whatever can you offer up? I've been using Ancestry.com and added my name to the waiting list to submit my DNA.

So far, I've found when my fathers side entered the US from Ireland. Also found out my last name originally had two G's until we immigrated to Pennsylvania, PA. My great-great-great grandpa was a coal miner.

I googled my entire name and was able to find my ENTIRE family tree on my dads side all the way back to the 1700s. traced them back to St. Laurent, Orleans Island, Canada. tons of information was included from addresses to life summaries. I learned a lot I never knew.

http://hallbergfamily.net/genealogy/

this was the website. one of you might get lucky and find yourself on it.
BAD EMAIL because the address couldn ot be found, or is unable to receive mail.

A more positive response to your request: The biggest source of genealogical info is probably still the Mormon church in Salt Lake City, but I dunno how hard it is for non-scholars and/or non-Mormons to access.

I did some genealogy when I was in Boy Scouts for a citizenship merit badge, but since that revealed that I'm pretty much descended from a long line of nobodies, ne'er-do-wells, and peasants who never accomplished much worthy of memorialization, and half of them were Norwegians on top of it all, I've never had much interest in doing it.

Anti-genealogy as reverse snobbery. That's me. [grin1]

Never did those things, but a couple of months back I found warnings given out to German Military soldiers stating that once they cross the border they could not come back, even with the proper documents...It was in the name of my Great grandfather.

My dad has disowned his father, I don't know why, never pressed to ask much. I just know it's a touchy subject with him. I really want to know my family's history. I've always been fascinated by history. I'm not looking for a famous connection, I could give two shits. I just want to KNOW ... if that makes much sense. No one in my family keeps in contact with Grandpa Dugan, but I just did some internet work and found his address and phone number. He still lives in the same city my uncles, aunt and dad grew up in.

My Grandpa Konrad passed away six years before I was born. I've never met either of my actual Grandpa's. I have a step-grandpa though who's always been good to me. Except when I was 7 years old and asked for a hair cut and he buzzed me bald.

I just meant to emphasize that I have no interest in mine, since I already know I come from a long line of boring people.

Now if I could figure out how to do a history of our family dogs, that would be cool. To my knowledge, they've never been boring.

When we did U.S. History, I annoyed our teacher with knowing the answers or coming close to it all of the time. He said if I was half as informed on History in general as I was U.S. History, I'd be getting an A+. Everything was in the books and when it comes to "my" family or country, I have great interest. I didn't give two shits about Germany or anything. Although, now knowing I'm nearly half German, I do have interest, lol.

Today I got a good chunk of info on Grandpa Konrad from Grandma and got that side of the family back about 4 generations now. I don't know if any of them is 'exciting', but they are my family and therefore I want to know.

About the only part of America I'm into is the history of ideas -- from founding fathers to the history of "real" liberalism before the Populists and Progressives and the Keynesians and other whackos corrupted it. :)

Cheesey (17-Nov) : If the Badgers had a decent QB, they would have won. The guy can't hit a wide open receiver
Martha Careful (17-Nov) : chop block
