He's most definitely not a nose tackle.

I think this will be another guy that'll be on the roster for two or three years then gets cut, but that's just me.

from a hawkeye fanatic:

Congratulations, professional football fans! Your favorite team has made the wonderful decision to draft Mike Daniels Like any responsible selector, you're no doubt filled with questions about your potential new draft pick. We here at Black Heart Gold Pants will try our best to answer any questions you might have.

So, Is This Guy Any Good? No! What are you thinking, drafting him? Wait, just kidding. Daniels was a damn good player for Iowa. Calling him an "under the radar" recruit would be a gross understatement -- he was a 2* kid who was headed to Villanova before Iowa swooped in at the eleventh hour and shanghaied him away to the Big Ten. He was basically invisible for his first three years on campus, in part because he needed to bulk up to B1G size (he arrived at Iowa around 6-1, 230 and leaves here at 6-1/2, 290, officially) and in part because Iowa had guys like Adrian Clayborn, Karl Klug, Christian Ballard, and Mitch King manning the defensive line spots ahead of him. You may remember them from past NFL Drafts. Daniels broke through into the starting lineup in 2010 and made a pretty big impact: 40 tackles, 11 tackles for loss, 4 sacks. There were times when he was Iowa's best defensive lineman, even though he was surrounded by Clayborn, Klug, and Ballard.

Those guys flew the coop after 2010, though, leaving Daniels to be "the man" on the Iowa defensive line. Despite being one of only two experienced options on the DL (along with fellow draft prospect Broderick Binns, whose starting job Daniels stole in 2010) and being the key guy opposing offenses tried to gameplan against, Daniels was actually better in 2011 than 2010 -- much better, in fact. The stats bear that out -- 67 tackles, 13.5 tackles for loss, 9 sacks -- even though he was battling injuries throughout the season. A fully healthy Daniels terrorized Oklahoma in the first half of the Insight Bowl against Oklahoma in December (he had a quieter second half, in part because Oklahoma started double-teaming him more). So yeah: Daniels is a good player. He also has strong off-field resume: he was a team captain and vocal leader in 2011 and there was never a hint of trouble around him.

Huh. So why's he still available this late in the draft?
Um... size? Yeah, probably size. While he bulked up at Iowa, 6-1/2, 290 still isn't exactly "huge," especially in terms of the NFL. While he was an explosive first step (he was almost always the first guy off the line of scrimmage at the snap), he struggled against bigger and stronger (and just plain better) offensive linemen, although he did get markedly better on that issue from the beginning of 2010 to the end of 2011. Daniels is also somewhat limited in terms of schemes: Iowa ran an orthodox 4-3 defense and that's probably what his future NFL team needs to run as well. He probably needs a bigger defensive tackle alongside him in a 4-3 scheme to be effective. You don't want him as a defensive tackle in a 3-4 defense and he's not really quick enough to be a defensive end in either scheme.

Does he have a cool nickname?
Does he ever! In fact, he has not one but two nicknames -- "Beast" and "Diesel." Iowa fans could never really decide which one they liked better; maybe you guys will have better luck on that front.

He may not be a full time NT, but I sure can see him as a pass situation NT, leverage, quickness, balance and speed are a good combination for that.
Why is Jerry Kramer not in the Hall of Fame?

CBS

Overview
Daniels was lightly recruited out of high school, choosing Iowa over Temple. After redshirting in 2007, he saw limited action as a reserve end/tackle in 2008, recording six tackles, one tackle for loss and a sack. He was a backup defensive tackle in 2009 as a sophomore, finishing with 10 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks. Daniels earned a starting job in 2010 as a junior with eight starts, recording 40 tackles, 11.0 tackles for loss and 4.0 sacks, earning All-Big Ten Honorable Mention honors. He had his most productive season in 2011 as a senior (13 starts), finishing with 67 tackles and a team-best 13.5 tackles for loss and 9.0 sacks, earning Second Team All-Big Ten honors. Daniels
is an undersized interior player, but plays with the quickness and motor to be productive at the next level ? a lot to love about his first step burst and explosion. He was the spark plug of the defense at Iowa and was productive against both the pass and run, leading the team in both sacks and tackles for loss as a senior. Daniels lacks the length, core strength and overall size that teams look for and he won?t be a great fit in every defensive front, but he?s a player who will fit in a rotation somewhere and has enough physical skill to contribute ? very similar prospect as Colts defensive tackle Drake Nevis and looks like a solid top-125 pick. ANAYLYSIS Strengths: A coordinated athlete with a lightning quick first step and natural explosion ? routinely the first defensive lineman off the ball. Built low to the ground and is most effective when he keeps his pad level low and battles. Has active hands to slip blocks and a high motor to never give up on the play ? plays hard and hungry on every snap. Agile and nimble footwork with smooth body control ? very light on his feet. Fights through the whistle and is always chirping and going at full-go ? love his effort and determination. Extremely tough, battling through an ankle sprain most of 2011. A leader and hard worker off the field, adding over 50-pounds since enrolling as a 230-pound freshman. Consistently productive over his career (27 tackles for loss and 15.5 sacks). Weaknesses: Undersized and lacks elite bulk and girth for an interior defensive lineman ? doesn?t have NFL measureables or length. Lacks a stout anchor and can be redirected off the snap with underwhelming base strength. Tends to play too upright at times and needs to be more consistent with his leverage to maximize his potential. Has short arms and has room to improve his pass rush technique. Struggles to disengage with inconsistent hand use and power ? too often gets lost in a crowd. Needs to wrap and finish, too often settling to just hit the ballcarrier. Battled a leg injury for most of the past season so his medical will be important. Will be scheme-specific at the next level because of his lack of size and strength ? won?t be a fit for everyone. NFL Comparison: Drake Nevis -- Dane Brugler

B1G TEN fan. Hope he really works out for the Pack. Will definitely bring in competition to this defensive line, which is much needed.

I keep seeing NT...why not the 5 tech? If he is being brought in for pure NT, that will not workout...at all.

If this guy has any shot at making this football team, I'd expect Capers to draw up some packages featuring 4-down linemen. Maybe we do see a hybrid soon.

Zero, modern day nose tackles need to be 320 or better. We have two guys like that now, Raji and Pickett. The rest will be DE's. Since Pickett is getting up, I'd rather see us use his snaps as backup NT and spell Raji.

He's listed as a defensive tackle yes, but a 4-3 tackle at that. 4-3 DTs often convert to 3-4 DE, not 3-4 NT.
