Green Bay -- A pair of USC Trojans may anchor the Green Bay Packers pass rush. With the 28th overall pick, the Packers took Nick Perry.

Perry made waves at the NFL scouting combine and showed an elite burst off the edge in college. Now, he'll get a chance to be the Packers' right outside linebacker. His senior year, Perry finished with 54 tackles, 9 1/2 sacks and 13 tackles for loss.

As noted here, Perry had success against top competition, including Stanford's Jonathan Martin. His natural bend around the edge appeals to teams and should be a major asset to Green Bay's sagging pass rush. A year ago, Green Bay finished 27th in sacks. The defense auditioned several players at the position throughout the year but never found an answer. In Perry, maybe the Packers will be able to apply pressure from both sides.

nice pick. I am not sure if I would have taken Courtney Upshaw over him. Perry seems to be able to line up at DE or OLB

At the risk of sounding like McCarthy, I think he could be a dominant force IF he plays with slightly lower pad level...

This kid looks pretty good. Pass rushing is definitely our teams biggest weakness. If Perry can get to the QB or help Clay get to the QB, this pick will also make our DBs look a lot better!

Perry does provide instant improvement over our current OLB opposite Predator: he has shown capable of consistently setting the edge against the run.

You have to think having Predator play the other OLB position will push him in a positive sense.

Edit: Ted confirms Perry will be an OLB.

Here’s what scouts told Pete Dougherty about USC linebacker Nick Perry, the Packers’ first round pick at No. 28 overall:

• Nick Perry, USC, 6-2¾, 271, Round 1-2

Opened his career at the elephant position, where the Packers’ Clay Matthews played as a senior at USC, but then moved to defensive end when Lane Kiffin took over as coach. “I like him (as a first-rounder),” a scout said. “I watch him play and thought they tried to do too much with him (at USC), but I think he’s a good player. They had him reading a lot , but I like him. I don’t know if he’s truly dynamic but I think he’s a good player.” Redshirt junior had 21½ sacks in his career, including leading the Pac-12 last season with 9½. Also had 29½ tackles for a loss in his career. Impressed some teams by showing a hard edge when challenged in interviews. “I like guys like that,” one scout said. “I think he’s a good player, I think he’s an honest player and he’s going to be a good player for somebody.” At the combine ran the 40 in an excellent 4.59 seconds, had an explosive 38½-inch vertical and did 35 bench reps, which tied for second most among defensive linemen at the combine. However, his lateral quickness is suspect for outside linebacker. “At 271 pounds as an outside linebacker? I don’t see it,” another scout said. “That’s where he’s coming into the league. He’s going to be 280 probably before training camp. If he can make that transition to outside linebacker, wow.”

I wanted Upshaw, but this guy was my next pick. I'm on board!

As a person who has ties to USC and goes to damn near every game, I LOVE this pick. If Upshaw wasn't the guy and they were taking an OLB in round 1, It would have been Perry.

I trust the Packers coaches to help Nick in space, where he needs work, but I tell you what, he may have been the best pass rusher in this draft!

I am excited about this pick!! FIGHT ON!!

Michael Lombardi of NFL Network tweeted that he loved the pick and that he reminded him of LaMarr Woodley. If nothing else, they're similar in size, with Perry being slightly taller, I think. I don't know how because I don't know the guy well enough, but if he's anything close to Woodley, this is a FANTASTIC pick.
