The point is the Packers are in a tough situation with Collins. IF they allow him back and he were to get hurt it is a HUGE lawsuit & they will forever be looked upon as an organization that doesn't put player safety or his off the field future first. That type of attitude COULD lead to a lawsuit.

If they allow him to play and nothing happens, no harm no foul.

If they cut him then they are not being loyal. They could offer him an injury settlement and let him walk, but again they get looked upon like a "heartless" organization.

Damned if the do and damned if they don't.

If it were me, I'd error on the side of caution with Collins. Necks & spines are not something I'd be willing to play around and gamble with.

As far as concussions and Rodgers, if it got to a point where he was like former NFL QB Chris Chandler and had the nickname "Caption Concussion", I'd also error on the side of caution. But since he changed his helmet so far, there has been no REPORTED concussions. The NFL is attempting and has done a good jib with concussion awareness and safety measures.

There is more information and safety equipment for concussions then neck or spine injuries.

The organisation has no risk here whatsoever. Nick has been cleared by his own doctor, and a waiver will be signed. ALL players know that their chance of injury is 100%. That is part of the game.

I found an article for all of you that think MM and Ted Thompson actually care about Nick's health.

"Packers coach Mike McCarthy and GM Ted Thompson don't seem to want to let Nick Collins play. Good for them.

I'm not sure the last time I heard a coach and GM worry more about what's best for the player than best for the team."

The reason why not is because whenever I vacillate on whether something is a good idea or not, it so often turns into a NOT answer. If their conscience tells them not to welcome Nick Collins back, McCarthy and Thompson should wish Nick Collins the best in whatever he does -- even playing against the Packers -- but they should not encourage him to take what they view as a risky action. If Collins gets hurt somewhere else, McCarthy and Thompson did their part by trying to dissuade him. It's not their role to tell him what to do, but it is their role to give him their best advice.

That means not letting him play for the Packers."

...and I'm fine with that. If the Green Bay Packers say that "best of luck to you and your future as an NFL player, but not with the Packers"- I am good with that. Many would argue that this conservative position is good for the Pack, others could equally argue that it is bad, in the sense that we are an organization that can hurt a career coming off injury- or somesuch- I would just appreciate an honest (NON- PC) explanation to all of us fans, in some detail. It wouldn't be hard to do, excepting some of the medical history laws I'm afraid they would hide behind...

disclaimer- I never slobbed Nick's knob like most Packer fans do. I thought his individual stats were somewhat expensive as regards what I perceived as missed defensive assignments and leanings towards glory vs. pure defensive team play.

I'm wondering if anyone will actually notice who wrote the story and maybe you would get why he is so against Collins playing for the Packers :)

And Dfoster I am with you on how it would be nice to know what is really going on but that is not how Thompson works. We still never heard the real story behind the Favre situation and probably never will.

Truth be told, fans can't and wouldn't be able to have the 110% God's honest truth/ They complain when players take to Twitter and are honest, they complain about Irsay on Twitter and they would most certainly would be pissed about the Collins and other situations that arise in the course of a year (if a GM or Thompson were to be completely truthful).

I just think it's strange how hard Ted Thompson and Mike McCarthy are pushing for retirement.

Mike McCarthy was asked about Nick Collins playing again and he said if he were his son, he wouldn't let you play. Ted Thompson was later referred to those comments and he agreed.

I repeat one of my recent posts:

Players want to play no matter what. If they are old & done, or if hurt, they want to play. They have been conditioned to think that way (to play hurt) otherwise 1. They will lose their jobs and 2. they will be called "soft".

To say "it's up to the player" puts the player at risk 90% of the time.

While I am not a person that agrees with all the "rule" changes that many feel makes the "softer", I am for teams taking a stand with certain types of injuries and telling a player "NO, we are not going to allow you to take that type of risk on our team, and feel it is best for you and your long term health & future to NOT play."

To me that type of statement would not only speak volumes to fans, but also teammates and the NFL as a whole.

Nick is always going to want to play, hell look at Brett Favre, he still wanted to play for how long?! In 2008 I broke my arm (humorous) pitching (literally while I was releasing the ball) in a semi-pro baseball game and now have a rod and 8 screws in it. I can't throw ANYWHERE NEAR what I used but I still want to play. I haven't played in an adult softball game, played catch w/ my sons, or even walked onto a diamond as a player since I broke it, but I still have that urge to go out there.

My point is as a player or former player sometimes you have to have people tell you "enough is enough". In my case my wife had been telling me for a year that she would rather me stop playing. 6 weeks before I broke my arm, my teammate broke his the exact same way, releasing a pitch, and for the 1st time since I started playing ball (at the age of 6) I got scared on the field and started to question and re-evaluate things. After I heard my arm break in mid-pitch, I knew it was over. My wife never told me "I told you to stop", instead she said "let's find something else for you to put as much passion into" (outside my family).

I think (and this is my opinion) that Mrs. Collins & family would rather be safe then sorry with Nick. WE would not have to help Nick with therapy, help him bathe, clean him after he uses the restroom, take him to various Dr. appointments or worse, lay him to rest, THEY WOULD. It seems to me like people are far to concerned with "what it would do to the Packers" vs what it would do to a family.
