Lechler has been the Raiders' best player for the last few years (LOL), but I don't think he'd want to move from California to Green Bay, man.

Ron Wolf allowed Craig Hentrich, one of the best punters in the NFL, to get away in free agency in 1998.

NOOO effing way!!

Wolf never screwed up and let someone go that was good!

Our punting problems for the last decade are the direct result of the ghost of Craig Hentrich. The Titans signed him for a 1M a year back then. At the time I though it ludicrous but in hingsight that would have been cheap.

A good punter is as valuable as anybody else on the team. Old crazy Al Davis new it as a young man. But with that great punter, you need a great defense and special teams, which does not apply to the 2008 GBP.

I guess we'll have to start from scratch next year, but I'm not one to condone anything above a 4th rounder, that is unless you use your draft picks on Ahmad Carroll, Joey Thomas, and an overated DT from Clemson. In that case, go ahead with your first rounder. Have we ever discussed how bad our previous GM was in the draft?

I'm not really sure if you meant to imply that Ron Wolf never had bad draft picks on that last part, but remember John Michels? Ross Verba? Mark D'Onofrio? They're all high draft picks, but with all the great things Wolf did, that gets forgotten easily. And it deserves to be.

Also, Ted Thompson hasn't been all that bad. He seems to be quite bad in the first round, but gets all kinds of amazing players in the rounds after that. Maybe that's why we always trade down? I hope he'll get a good first-rounder soon though. Especially if he's an O-line player.

A punter though, I wouldn't mind him use a 3/4th round pick like I said before. We have tons of good young players, we don't need alot more imo. Get some people in FA maybe and just use your early draft picks to stop the most glaring needs. Punter, D-line and O-line seem to be some of them. Maybe even trade up to get a 1st round O-line player, D-line player and a 3/4th round Punter?

Ofcourse Ted Thompson shouldn't abandon his strategy, since the drafting on quality seems to work quite well. I do think he has to start signing some FAs in that case though, because we will keep having these holes this way.

That's why Ryan was so good - he was from a part of Canada that is even COLDER than Green Bay. Oh ya, and really windy too. There are cold weather punters and kickers about. 🙂

It has been done before, by none other than the wacky Al Davis.

I hate to quibble... who the hell am I kidding? I love to quibble. Davis drafted Sebastian (Kick his ass, Sea Bass!) Janikowski in round 1. place kicker, not a punter.

"bozz_2006" wrote:

I meant Ray Guy actually ^^. (Have been 5 first round Kickers if I'm correct, he's the only punter)

And ye, he drafted both a punter and a kicker in the first round. Gotta love that man. I see what he sees in those guys, but seriously, do you have to give up a first rounder for a strong leg?

On topic though, I wouldn't mind it if Ted Thompson used a somewhat high draft pick (3/4) on a punter, if he's worth it.

"Rockmolder" wrote:

There isn't a punter on this earth worth a first round pick. Or a 3 or a 4. Too many other positions to fill. I must be getting old; I remember when punting and kicking was done by guys in other positions (Max Mcgee, Paul Hornung, Donny Anderson).

I've attempted making that point many times in the past regarding position players not only doing the punting but also the place kicking.

Zero2Cool (10-Mar) : LB Oren Burks to sign a 2-year, $5M deal with the Bengals.
Zero2Cool (10-Mar) : Based on how it was worded at the time, probably scout.
beast (10-Mar) : I don't think the media person ever told the public the source, but Gute or LaFleur did say they thought Tom has earned his spot at OT
beast (10-Mar) : I think it was supposedly unnamed Packers source
buckeyepackfan (10-Mar) : Was that Gute or Lefleur or someone else?
buckeyepackfan (10-Mar) : Zach Tom could be a really good guard, an all pro tackle, but probably be a HOF Center. Who said that?
Zero2Cool (10-Mar) : It's March 10th. I don't think anything is done.
Martha Careful (10-Mar) : if we think CB is done, we have a poor roster
Mucky Tundra (10-Mar) : CB and OG in FA, narrows down the top of the draft board a little
