Was Tim Tebow’s game-winning touchdown illegal?

On the line or off?
Only six players are set on the line of scrimmage. (NFL.com)

A review of the Denver Broncos' pre-snap formation on the game-winning touchdown pass from Tim Tebow to Demaryius Thomas suggests that the play could have been ruled illegal.

Only six Denver Broncos players were lined up on the line of scrimmage before the snap. NFL rules say that a team must have seven or more players on the line for a snap to be legal. As the picture above shows, tight end Dante Rosario was well behind his teammates.

The formation eventually caught the eye of current Fox analyst and former NFL Vice President of Officiating Mike Pereira. He dismissed any suggestion that the play should have been whistled dead. "Watch on any Sunday," he tweeted. "This is a good formation compared to many. They are not technical with this."

In other words, the "seven men on the line" is a rule on the books but one that doesn't require a tape measure and straight edge to determine if every player is precisely on the line of scrimmage. If seven guys are close to line and set, Pereira implies, then the formation is fine. The seven Broncos were close to the line and set, so there was nothing to call.

This seems to go against all other NFL rule enforcements, which always say that the letter of the law is far more important than the spirit of it. Still, when Pereira speaks, it's wise to listen.

IMO this is one where the refs tend to err on the side of defining "on the line" very loosely. I've seen a lot worse than this.

I used to complain about this all the time (in between his usual FS penalties, Clifton loves to go back a little extra, as do most LTs when facing a speed rusher).

I always thought it would be a simple rule to have it be "a player is not "on the line" unless the front of his helmet is no farther away from the line than the center's butt." But in the offensive minded NFL, that's never gonna happen.

And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

I read a different article on this and the NFL stated there was no infraction or rule broken. I don't know because I never cared much about the line of scrimmage. The closest I ever played to it was QB and as long as I was behind the center, no worries mate!

Man I dont know of another play that has been talked about in a PO game more then this ...

Will be interesting next week when the broncos are done and we are talking about how the packers will be going against the saints in the NFC championship game at home for a rematch of week 1.

Changing the subject, am I the only one who hopes we face the Broncos in the SB? Nothing more I'd love than to slaughter the Broncos with John Elway in the booth watching.
