I got an email today from the folks at urbandictionary.com:




I don't know exactly when I submitted that definition, but it's been so many months that I had almost forgotten doing it. In fact, it's been so long that "flother" doesn't appear anywhere in my search history, so it was probably before April 2011.

I'm amazed it takes this long to approve definitions. Still, it's kind of cool mine will be the only one on UrbanDictionary for that ancient word.

That'll fit in just perfectly between flotetable (Items that hover over the surface of the water), flotfumhe (fucking laughing on the floor until my head explodes), flothed (To hit someone in the eye with your right elbow), flothes (flowery stuff) and flothing (Intoxicated, generally weed based).

ah...but I'm not sure digitization makes the tough work of making a dictionary any easier. 8 months actually may be pretty quick.

Rourke or anyone else interested in words should check out Simon Winchester's The Professor and the Madman. It's about the original writing of the OED, the single greatest dictionary in the history of man.

It turns out, for example, that the largest contributor to said dictionary was, for most of his adult life, institutionalized in an asylum.

And just to be pedantic, the OED was published in "fascicles." Huzzahs to the first person who can define that term without looking it up.
