F-16s are single engine planes and have a single pilot.
F-18s have two engines. Here's a little cheat sheet:

So if you see a single engine, single pilot Aemrican fighter plane, it's often the F-16.
I'm by no means the airplane expert. I just know this stuff because I used to make model planes when I was a kid.
