I'll make this mesh with the no full article posting later when I have time. For now, I think you all should read it as it is because I won't be able to write it up better.

GREEN BAY, Wis. — Green Bay Packers safety Nick Collins isn't talking like a player who expects to play football again.

The neck injury Collins suffered in Week 2 not only cost him the rest of this season, but has the 28-year-old preparing for a premature end to his NFL career.

"It's been a great ride for me," Collins said Wednesday. "The success that I've had over these past years that I've been here, that's just gratifying enough."

Two months ago, it was a much different story for Collins. He had been to three consecutive Pro Bowls and was coming off a Super Bowl-winning season.

Now, he just wants to get a head start on building his coaching resume — a process that's already begun. Collins has stayed in Green Bay since his injury and has been helping coach the secondary during practice.

"It's giving me a great experience to prepare for when I do decide to retire from this game," Collins said. "I want to become a coach. (Now) I'll have more upside to wherever I go to coach, and they can look at it and say, ‘OK, he was on the sideline doing this, coaching these guys.' It's just uplifting for me."

Collins still acts like a member of the Packers' active roster. He comes into the locker room after practice with all of the players and changes at his same locker.

There aren't even any noticeable differences in Collins physically. He moves around normally and was able to shed his neck brace last Friday.

"I'm free," Collins said, referring to the neck brace being removed. "I'm a free man. I'm out of prison."

He even feels the same.

"I really don't have any pain," Collins said. "That's the crazy thing about this whole situation. Since the injury happened, I really didn't suffer from any pain besides when I had the surgery, and that only lasted for a couple days."

Collins underwent neck surgery in late September and wore a neck brace for about a month.

The biggest difference may be in the tone of his voice. Because the operation was near his larynx, Collins believes it affected the way he talks.

But Collins is able to engage in some physical activity. He's riding bikes, working out on an elliptical machine and even doing some light weightlifting — although no lifting over his head.

Much of that sounds encouraging for a possible return, but it's nothing close to putting on a helmet and laying hits on wide receivers down the middle of the field.

"I just have to take small steps and not try to rush anything," Collins said. "That's all I can do right now. It's going to be a long process. It's going to take time."

Many injured players go through a moment of wondering why they had such bad luck and misfortune. For Collins, that didn't happen right away.

"Once I started going out there on the field, missing the game, being around the players, but where I'm in a position where I can't help those guys, that's when it crossed my mind: ‘Why?'" Collins said.

Though it wasn't the way Collins wanted his season to go, he's already trying to make the best of it. He'll be with the Packers on their trip to San Diego on Sunday and hopes he can continue to travel with the team all season.

"Until they say, ‘We think you need to just take a break, you're kind of interfering with the team,'" Collins said, "I don't think these guys mind me being there. They look at me as a leader. I have a lot of experience, a lot of games under my belt. That's the quality that I have to help these young guys be successful. That's pretty much my role now.

"I get to see the game from a whole different side. It's amazing how fast the game is from not being out there and just on the sideline looking at it."

Okay, I am going to break the rule again.

GREEN BAY – Nick Collins was all smiles in the Green Bay Packers locker room Thursday, content – at least for now – in his new role.

“Just a different side of Nick Collins – more of a teacher than anything,” the Packers three-time Pro Bowl safety said, appearing before reporters for the first time without a neck brace. “(I) just want these guys to go out and play fast and know what they’re doing, know their assignments so they can be successful as a team.”

That team will be without Collins, who suffered a career-threatening neck injury Sept. 18 at Carolina, for the rest of the season on the field, but they won’t be without him on the sideline. Collins, who spoke at length for the first time with reporters following the Packers’ Oct. 23 victory at Minnesota, has been on the sideline for each of the Packers’ last three games and will make the trip to San Diego for Sunday’s game as well.

Collins said he’s living in Green Bay and coming to Lambeau Field each day, although he’s not attending every meeting or practice because “I don’t want to distract these guys. They’ve got to focus. Any advice that they need, I’m here for them. That’s pretty much my role now. I’m on the sideline looking at formations, giving them tips on what they like to do out of certain formations and stuff like that. I think it’s a plus.”

Collins still hopes to resume his NFL career next season, but he won’t know for another five months whether he’ll be able to play again after undergoing spinal fusion surgery at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York on Sept. 27. The surgery was a “single spinal fusion” in which Dr. Frank Cammisa removed a ruptured disc in Collins’ neck and fused the area with Collins’ own bone from his hip.

Collins said being around the game isn’t making him miss playing any more than he already does; rather, it’s giving him a new perspective and allowing him to stay connected to the team when many players on season-ending injured reserve lose touch.

“I get to see the game from a whole different side. It’s amazing how fast the game is from not being out there and just on the sideline looking at it,” Collins said. “It’s been a great ride for me. It’s giving me a great experience to prepare for when I do decide to retire from this game. I’ll have more upside to wherever I go to coach and they can look at it and say, ‘OK, he was on the sideline doing this, coaching these guys.’ It’s just uplifting for me.

“Going through a tough situation like I’m going through right now, just to be around these guys is very uplifting. They keep me positive. I’m always a positive guy, so it’s just been fun. I can let my body heal and prepare for coming back next year.”

Collins said he has been told by several people that his voice sounds different since the surgery, which required doctors to negotiate around his voicebox. But he’s sounding more and more like himself, and losing the neck brace last Friday was definitely progress.

“I’m free. I’m a free man,” Collins joked. “I’m out of prison.”

For now, Collins is limited to riding the stationary bike and using the elliptical machine as far as workouts. He’s also using 3-pound dumbbells. He said he’s set to meet with Cammisa when the Packers play the New York Giants in a month, and again reiterated that he’s at peace if it turns out that he can’t play football again.

“Coming from a small college (Bethune-Cookman), getting drafted by the Green Bay Packers and the success that I’ve had over these past years that I’ve been here – that’s just gratifying enough,” Collins said. “With my family, I want to be there with them throughout their whole lives. That’s the most important thing. I can take nothing away from this game. I love this game. I appreciate this game. Hopefully, I can continue to play this game.

“Everybody in my family is pretty upbeat. They say, ‘Just keep your head up. You’ll be back.’ Everything has been positive from everybody, and that just keeps me going. I’m glad to know that everybody has been thinking about me.”

I only hope for the best for Collins. If it's serious enough, I hope he doesn't force himself onto the field, there's life outside football. He's had a great career for sure, and it's a shame it could end prematurely.

My big concern is his health first.
The Packers will miss his play, as will us fans.
It's so sad when a player has to quit when he has so much talent and desire to play. But thank God he didn't get paralized.

Personal aside, this is a huge loss. A year or two ago, we listed potential HoF players for the Packers. Collins was on that list, and with good reason. At only 28, he has 3 Pro Bowls, one SB ring. Led the NFL in INT yards and INT TDs one season so far. Has 21 INTs.

And had he gone on to play many more years, he'd have more rings, which like it or not matters to those who vote for HoF'ers. He's also a pretty good tackler.

He's done. When a player starts talking like that, he's already resigned himself to it. He'll never play again.

And that's a shame, but it's the right thing. There is life outside of football, after all.

I fully expect him to give it every shot. I guess a lot depends on how quickly the fusion takes place. If we note Peyton Mannings delay in fusion and the three surgeries, it's not too encouraging. Hopefully that's not the case for Nick, beyond simply his desire to return to the field.
