I will admit that last year at this time I thought that the players had tuned Mike out. It can get that way because almost every coach only has so many stories, so many inspirational speeches and so many catch phrases. It can get old, unless of course you are a coaching in the NCAA where the turn over is constant.

I actually thought at this time last year it was a time for a change, and change was needed to take it to a Super Bowl championship. I thought the team talent was there, but the head coach was not the man to make it happen.

Now.. A year later, I thank The Lord I was not running the Packers a year ago.

I think the most remarkable advancement Mike has made is he has the team mentally, emotionally ready to play now on game day. I think his preparation has been far better then at any time in his Packer tenure as head coach.

I think he knows that two in a row will get him into the hall. I think that the veterans and the players know that if they ever are on the cusp of getting into the hall... Two in a row is the little note on the ballot that will get them in.

I reckon my question is.. What do you think Mike is doing better than he has in the years before last season?

Let's focus on Mike... And not get into a bitching session on his choice of his special teams coach.

What I think is impressive is that ever since he and Rodgers have been having their extended one-on-one sessions that the Packers have been darn near unstoppable. That shows some tremendous growth in my opinion.

I think i was right there with u wanting mike gone, but that may have been the year before. But i am more than happy with him now. Actually, my biggest problem with what he does he actually didn't do last week. I normally can't stand it when he takes his foot off the gas and keeps teams in the game, i loved the killer instinct last week, didnt let off until 5 minutes left and a giant lead.

I hate it when he forgets to put the cap on his red sharpie. Then he sticks it in the back of his hat. He looks like a dork with all that red sharpie marks all over the back of his neck.

That is all I got.

It's an indisputable fact that in almost any game, aggressive play usually beats conservative play. My main bone of contention with Mike McCarthy used to be that in critical situations, he seemed to choose the conservative route, which often tended to blow up in his face. There were times he seemed, as Gregg Easterbook likes to put it, to be trying to lose as gracefully as possible -- that is, choosing plays that, if they didn't work out, would be most easily defensible before a hostile press and public. Hence he would punt it away when I thought he should have gone for the first down, or kick a field goal when I thought he could have tried for a touchdown. It's a lot easier to tell the press after a loss, "Well, you have to take the points" than "Well, statistically speaking, the right move there was to go for the touchdown, even though it didn't pan out." Many times, when he would settle for a punt or a field goal, I would "write the words 'Game over' in my notebook ," and more often than not, the Packers would in fact lose.

Lately, however, he seems to maintain an aggressive posture almost the entire game, and I love it. Last week, I was thrilled to see him go for it on 4th down in the red zone -- statistically, the right move to make. Even though it didn't work out that time, much to the chagrin of some of the guys in the chat room, it sent a message to the Broncos that there would be no surrender, no quarter taken, that if there was a chance for points, the Packers were going to take it. Yes, that decision probably prevented the Packers from having their first 50-point game in six years , but who cares? I love even more that he reinforced the message with the unusually timed onside kick, which caught everyone off guard. And finally, I love that he left Rodgers in until the last few minutes; in fact, I wouldn't have minded him leaving him in a little longer to get his fifth touchdown pass.

The Packers have a new face, there is a new sheriff in town, and the league has been put on notice that the Packers will show no mercy and take no prisoners. As long as Mike McCarthy maintains this posture, I believe this team will continue to be dominant.

(If anyone has a few more tattered clichés they would like to contribute to this thread, please feel free to do so.)

Reading some of the falcon's forums yesterday and they were bemoaning the fact that their GM hasn't come up with many "immediate impact" players. At once I thought "Well that's not how you make a great team, you draft and develop."

That points to Ted Thompson as a great talent evaluator and Mike McCarthy as a developer of that talent. I think Mike McCarthy can get the best out of his players over the long term.

(But I also wish he was more aggressive during games.)
