Here is hoping that his "gut feeling" is incorrect.. not many play the press coverage as well as Harris.. Williams can use another year of seasoning.. IMO.

Packers: Harris thankful for another chance

GREEN BAY Pulling back his long dreadlocks and pulling on his necklace Thursday afternoon, Al Harris headed for home, where Thanksgiving dinner with wife Shyla and sons Al Jr. and Gavin was waiting for him.

And while he doesn't know where he'll be next Thanksgiving the Green Bay Packers veteran cornerback was most certainly giving thanks after coming back from a potentially season-ending and career-threatening lacerated spleen suffered earlier this season.

"I am extremely thankful. Extremely thankful," Harris said as the Packers prepared for Sunday's game against the Carolina Panthers at Lambeau Field. "It was scary. It just made me put my life in perspective. This (football) is only a small piece, but an important piece. I appreciate it a little more.

"It was scary. I thought it was over for the year, and being that our team is going in a younger direction, that it could be it here."

Set to turn 34 for the Packers' Dec. 7 game against Houston and coming off his first Pro Bowl appearance, Harris admitted Thursday he thinks this is probably his final season in Green Bay, even though he's under contract through 2011.

Although he said he hasn't spoken to general manager Ted Thompson about it, he believes with the team's stable of young cornerbacks Tramon Williams, who played well as a starter in Harris' place, as well as Will Blackmon and Pat Lee behind him, the club will move him during the offseason for a draft pick.

"I think that's going to happen. And not from my performance or anything, but we're going young," Harris said. "I haven't talked to Ted about it. I've just got a gut feeling that that's the direction our team is headed. That's what happens in the league. I just have to make sure that I'm on top of my game.

"Every game I play is an audition. I have to make sure that I put good stuff on tape."

He's doing that. Harris, who suffered the injury Sept. 21 against Dallas in a collision with linebacker A.J. Hawk, and missed the team's next four games, has been nothing short of phenomenal since returning to action Nov. 2 against Tennessee.

In the four games he's played he has allowed only one completion, a 10-yarder to Bears tight end Greg Olsen.
In the Packers' otherwise embarrassing performance against the Saints Monday night, Harris pitched another shutout. Quarterback Drew Brees threw his direction only once, and the ball fell incomplete.

"He really played well. And that was the good news," defensive coordinator Bob Sanders said of Harris, who was matched up with Marques Colston and Devery Henderson in the game. "He's one of the hardest workers we've got in practice. And it's showing in the game."

Despite Harris' longtime reputation for having a good work ethic, cornerbacks coach Lionel Washington said he has seen a change in Harris since coming back from the injury.

"It seems like he's more focused. Even in practice, he's working his techniques his footwork, his hand placement better," Washington said. "Not that he wasn't focused before, but I think he's more focused on trying to go out there and play every snap as hard as you can play. He's doing the same thing in practice. He's so much more focused in practice and meeting rooms and asking questions, things like that. I think he's doing everything he needs to do.

"He's played pretty doggone good the last few weeks. He's getting back into his groove."

Harris needed to do that after the disappointment of last January's NFC Championship game, when Plaxico Burress caught most of his 11 passes for 151 yards against him in the New York Giants' victory at Lambeau Field en route to the Super Bowl XLII title.

"You get tired of people bringing up the Giants game, the Giants game, the Giants game," Harris said. "The guy caught some passes. He's a good receiver. I just got tired of people trying to define my career here or me as a player based on one game."

Instead, with the ambitious goal of playing 20 NFL seasons meaning he has eight to go, and he admits the last few will have to be as a nickel or dime back Harris needed to re-establish himself as a dominant cover man. And in the past four weeks, he's done that.

"You go from the Pro Bowl to people wondering if you're a starter, if you're over the hill," Harris said. "You always hear, 'Oh, he can't run,' this or that. You name the last time you saw somebody run past me. I've got things planned out. And I've got to finish strong. Always.

"Eight years from now when I'm calling you up, and I'm like, 'I'm about to shut it down, dawg,' I want you to remember this conversation we had. I'm going to get it in. I won't be a starter. Not playing my style of play. I won't be able to do that. But I love playing the game. So I'm going to get all I can get out of this thing."

Thanks to Tramon, I don't have to freak out about the possibility that this might be it for Al with us. If it is, it is. But I love the man, and personally, he can play on my team as long as he is able.

"I don't need no stinkin' spleen, doc. Yank that bitch, I got a game to play."

...Or words to that effect.

If I was Ted Thompson, that episode right then and there warrants a friggin' contract extension w/raise...I don't give a damn if he can play or not...

...and right now, he damn sure can, imo.

I'm tired of trading good players for draft picks.

Don't get me wrong now, I loved the approach the past few years because the team was bad and didn't have that good of youth, but that was then and this is now. We have too many draft picks on this team. The core of the team is young and talented. I don't see enough room to bring in another crew of 10 or 11 draft picks this year.

If we could move Al Harris for a DT, DE, or OL then I think it might be worth consideration. I'd even trade Al Harris straight up for Tony G if Kansas City thought it was worth it on their side.

However if it's Harris for a 2nd or 3rd, I'd prefer not to move him at all until Pat Lee shows he's read to step into the nickel role.

Al better be back next year. Very few players would actually be an upgrade from him.

I think Williams could do a good job replacing Harris, what worries me is Blackmon or Lee in the nickel long term. I'd rather have Harris, Woodson and Williams than Harris, Woodson and Lee/Blackmon.

I certainly don't hope this will happen. I can't imagine that Ted Thompson would want to trade him away. Like said before, our young CBs could use another year as back-ups, nickel- and dimecorners.

I know Ted Thompson wants to have a young team, and wants to build something himself from the ground up, but there's no reason to trade away players when you have one of the youngest rosters, you have a .500 team and have tons of potential. Draft picks aren't going to 'solve' the inconsistencies, a veteran player can.

We certainly had some people on this forum doing this...

I think Ted Thompson won't trade Al Harris this offseason, if he does, Ted Thompson is at risk of losing the team. After the big ordeal with Favre, I don't think the vets on our team would appreciate it at all if Ted Thompson gets rid of one of the team's veteran leaders. Plus, one reception in four games is AWESOME, not worth trading for a draft pick.

I'm not concerned if harris leaves at his position but I'm concerned as hell at williams spot :S ... who's going to take over, I sure hope Lee is developped faster then he needs to.

Thompson needs to plug some holes with players that are NFL ready.
There is no reason to get rid of Harris for a draft pick.

He won't trade him ... so I'm not worried at all ... I'm happy tramon being there is pushing harris to his best ... Harris is here until his contracts up ... unless his injured / retired / doesn't play good ...

When does harris's contrakt finish?
Glad To Be A Packers Fan.

Mucky Tundra (1h) : Or ties, but let's be real here
Mucky Tundra (1h) : Other scenario was Falcons+Rams losses
Mucky Tundra (1h) : Needed a Falcons loss for a Seahawk loss to clinch
buckeyepackfan (2h) : Am I wring in saying if Tge Vikings beat The Seahawks, The Packers clinch?
Mucky Tundra (21-Dec) : Agreed; you stinks
Zero2Cool (21-Dec) : I'm not beating anyone. I stinks.
Mucky Tundra (21-Dec) : rough injury for tank dell. guy can't catch abreak
beast (21-Dec) : So far the college playoffs have sucked... One team absolutely dominates the other
beast (21-Dec) : Well even if you weren't positive towards a guy, you wouldn't nessarily want to tell the media that (if they don't know about it)
Martha Careful (21-Dec) : I think MLF want Love to look past the end half issues, and feel good about his play. Our coaches generally keep a very positive tone.
beast (21-Dec) : I think a great running game will do that for most QBs
packerfanoutwest (21-Dec) : Coach Matt LaFleur has said quarterback Jordan Love is playing the best football of his career.
beast (21-Dec) : Oh, that's how you keep beating buckeye, with cheating
Zero2Cool (20-Dec) : There is a rule that if your name starts with 'b' you lose 15 points. Hey, I don't make the rules, I just enforce them!
wpr (20-Dec) : and then there is Beast. Running away with it all.
beast (20-Dec) : As of tonight, 3 way tie for 2nd in Pick'em, that battle is interesting!
beast (20-Dec) : Lions vs Vikings could be the main last game as it could determine division winners or #1 vs #2 seed
Mucky Tundra (20-Dec) : Or if KC needs to win for the #1 seed
Mucky Tundra (20-Dec) : Right now it looks like the only prime worthy games are Det-Minny and KC-Denver (if Denver can clinch a wild card spot)
Mucky Tundra (20-Dec) : The entirety of week 18 being listed as flex is weird
Zero2Cool (19-Dec) : Matt LaFleur today says unequivocally "Ted Thompson had nothing to do with the drafting of Jordan Love."
Zero2Cool (19-Dec) : Apparently, the editing is what pieces comments together. That Ted thing ... fake news.
Zero2Cool (19-Dec) : LaFleur "opportunity that Ted Thompson thought was too good to pass up"
Zero2Cool (19-Dec) : Jordan Love pick was Ted Thompson's idea.
Mucky Tundra (19-Dec) : Kyle Shanahan on signing De'Vondre Campbell as a FA last offseason: “We obviously made a mistake.”
packerfanoutwest (19-Dec) : Alexander’s last season with GB
Martha Careful (18-Dec) : if I were a professional athlete, I would probably look to see who the agent is for Kirk Cousins and then use him
beast (18-Dec) : $100 million fully guaranteed Kirk Cousins gets benched for rookie
Mucky Tundra (18-Dec) : a lower case b
Mucky Tundra (18-Dec) : The real lie is how beast capitalized his name in his message while it's normally spelled with
packerfanoutwest (18-Dec) : haha that's a lie
beast (17-Dec) : Despite what lies other might tell, Beast didn't hate the Winter Warnings, it felt refreshing to Beast for some reason.
Zero2Cool (17-Dec) : whiteout uniforms in general are pretty lame and weak. NFL greed at it's worst
Martha Careful (17-Dec) : The Viking uniforms, the whiteout uniforms specifically absolutely suck
beast (17-Dec) : Thanks Zero2Cool, looks a lot better now
beast (17-Dec) : Seems like someone has a crush on me, can't stop talking about me
Zero2Cool (17-Dec) : Should be gooder now. The forum default theme went to goofy land.
Zero2Cool (17-Dec) : What the hell
packerfanoutwest (17-Dec) : yeah beast hates the Winter Warning Unies
Mucky Tundra (16-Dec) : Okay I'm glad to know it's not just something happening to me lol
Mucky Tundra (16-Dec) : Zero, did you copy the Packers uniforms from last night and white out the board?
beast (16-Dec) : Oh crap, is the board going to the Winter Warning Uniforms too?!? It's all white on white right now!
Zero2Cool (16-Dec) : WR Odell Beckham Jr is officially a free agent after clearing waivers.
Zero2Cool (16-Dec) : Packers are 6th in sacks.
Zero2Cool (16-Dec) : RB David Montgomery will undergo season-ending knee surgery.
Mucky Tundra (16-Dec) : Dan Campbell on onside kick with 12 minutes left: In hindsight, wish I didn’t do that
Zero2Cool (16-Dec) : They have that whole 12th man thing so ...
Zero2Cool (16-Dec) : Of the times we've played there, I just can't recall hearing our fans.
wpr (16-Dec) : Well done jdlax. Well done.
