Cubs ban Carlos Zambrano 30 days

Typical

Carlos Zambrano has been placed on the disqualified list and will go 30 days without pay and without contact with his team, the Chicago Cubs announced Saturday.

"His actions last night were totally intolerable," Cubs general manager Jim Hendry said. "This was the most stringent penalty we could enforce without a release."

After giving up five home runs in a 10-4 loss to the Atlanta Braves and getting ejected for throwing at Chipper Jones on Friday, Zambrano cleaned out his locker and told trainers and clubhouse people during the game that he was "retiring."

Zambrano's agent Barry Praver told ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney that the Cubs were told within two hours after Friday's game that Zambrano "definitely" wasn't retiring. Praver said Zambrano made private emotional remarks to club staff and returned his things to his locker late Friday night.

More From ESPNChicago.com

Carlos Zambrano can't be serious about retiring ... Can he? If so, he'll be doing the Cubs' bottom line a huge favor, writes Melissa Isaacson. Story

Praver told ESPNChicago.com that the Major League Baseball Players Association will file a grievance on Monday due to the severity of the punishment.

"His actions last night are very detrimental to his teammates," Hendry said. "There's not much worse than running out on your teammates and announcing your retirement."

Hendry said he apologized to Braves general manager Frank Wren for the actions by Zambrano, which tarnished former manager Bobby Cox's night. The Braves retired Cox's No. 6 before the game.

Zambrano was ejected by plate umpire Tim Timmons in the fifth inning after throwing two inside pitches to Jones, the second going all the way to the backstop. The brushback pitches followed homers by Freddie Freeman and Dan Uggla.

"It was uncalled for, the pitch to Chipper Jones," Hendry said.

"I feel that anything at all to detract from Bobby Cox's night other than usual competition is totally intolerable."

Asked if he knew where Zambrano was on Saturday, Hendry said "I have no idea."

Jones said Hendry's comments were "a class move. I appreciated it."

Added Jones: "I like Carlos. I've always liked Carlos. He's an intense competitor. Unfortunately, sometimes that hurts him."

Cubs pitcher Ryan Dempster wasn't so understanding.

"He's made his bed. Let him sleep in it," Dempster said.

"It's not like it's something new."

Outfielder Marlon Byrd said he talked with Zambrano.

"He said that he's doing better today," Byrd said. "That's it."

Asked about Zambrano being placed on the disqualified list, Byrd said: "That's business. They have to do what they have to do."

Cubs third baseman Aramis Ramirez said Zambrano would be welcomed back by his teammates, but only if he made changes.

"If he changes his attitude, he's more than welcome," Ramirez said.

"He's got to think a little bit more. He's one man. It's not just one time. A lot of people have tried to help him. He won't let them."

Cubs pitching coach Mark Riggins, one of the last team members to speak to Zambrano during an in-game visit to the mound, said he didn't see Zambrano's actions coming.

"It shocked me that happened last night," Riggins said on ESPN 1000's "Talkin' Baseball" radio show on Saturday. "For a player to leave a team, that's kind of just leaving us out there hanging and it seems like it's about him and it's not about the team.

"You just can't let your emotions get that far. We're professional people. We're supposed to be able to handle this, whatever comes our way. It's just disappointing. And we all get embarrassed and it's how we handle those situations, I think, (that) shows the character we have."

Zambrano's track record of abnormal behavior is long and well-documented.

He bashed teammates on June 4 in St. Louis, calling them "Triple-A players" after the team lost a 10-inning game on an Albert Pujols walk-off home run. He apologized to the entire team the following day in Cincinnati.

On June 25, 2010, Zambrano had a dugout blowup with then-Cubs first baseman Derrek Lee at US Cellular field. Zambrano was suspended for two days before being placed on baseball's restricted list for six weeks. After he returned to the team on Aug. 8, he went 8-0 in 11 starts. Zambrano also went through eight months of anger-management sessions after the incident with Lee.

In 2007, Zambrano signed a deal adding $91.5 million over five seasons through 2012. He was to earn $17.85 million this season and $18 million in 2012.

Zambrano is 9-7 with a 4.82 ERA in 24 starts for the Cubs this season.

Zambrano's name was mentioned in trade rumors before the July 31 deadline. He said on July 28 he wanted to remain with the Cubs.

"I do want to stay here but at the same point I want this team to make some changes," Zambrano said. "If we want to win here, we need to make some changes. If I have to go, I have to go but I still have the Cubs in my heart."

Casey Coleman is likely to be called up from Triple-A Iowa to start Wednesday in Zambrano's spot. The team will need a starting pitcher for Zambrano's next scheduled turn in the rotation Wednesday at Houston.

Cardinals outfielder Matt Holliday left in the top of the eighth inning Monday night after a moth flew into his right ear and got stuck.

Holliday was playing left field with the Cardinals leading the Los Angeles Dodgers 1-0 when he called time and signaled for the trainer. After he was briefly looked at on the field, Holliday quickly departed and left for the clubhouse.

"That's a first for me," said starter Chris Carpenter.

Holliday departed Busch Stadium before speaking with the media but a Cardinals official described the incident to reporters following the game.

Trainers put Holliday in a dark room in hopes that the moth would crawl out to seek light before they realized that the moth had flown in head first and was stuck. Trainers were eventually able to extract the moth from Holliday’s ear to conclude a rather lengthy process.

Cardinals head athletic trainer Greg Hauck said he had seen one similar incident while he was working in the minor leagues.

Holliday was apparently given the moth, which was still alive when it was removed.

Kiss of death or just another sign of the fate ahead?

Sports Illustrated has Brewers covered

By Bob Wolfley of the Journal Sentinel

Aug. 23, 2011 10:47 a.m. |(56) Comments

Ryan Braun, Prince Fielder and Nyjer Morgan are on the cover of this week's Sports Illustrated, the first time since 1987 the magazine has featured an all-Brewers cover.

The story by Lee Jenkins is headlined "Living the High Life," with the subhead "How T-Plush and Two Wallbanging MVP Candidates Are Mixing a Strange Brew in Milwaukee."

The cover this week (Aug. 29) is not a regional one. All sections of the country are getting the same one.

In the baseball season preview issue of March 31, 2008, Braun shared the cover along with five other players.

But this week's cover is the first time that a Brewer or Brewers have been on the cover exclusively since April 27, 1987, when slugger Rob Deer was featured. In the 1987 season, the Brewers jumped out to a 13-0 start, tying a major league record. Team Streak went 17-1 in the first 18 games, tying an American League record.

According to Chris Mahr, a spokesman for Sports Illustrated, the Brewers have been on an SI cover five other times:
• April 20, 1987 (B.J. Surhoff, Paul Molitor and Mike Felder, featured as part of MLB “What They Make” package)
  • October 25, 1982 (Robin Yount)
  • November 11, 1982 (Robin Yount)
  • March 16, 1981 (Rollie Fingers)
  • April 30, 1979 (manager George Bamberger)
• Tom Haudricourt will be checking in with Brewers players later this afternoon on what they think about the cover and the "SI jinx."

After dropping 5 out of 6 are you scared yet?
It is funny that they are still 8 1/2 games in front of StL and their magic number is down to 11. That is the lowest number for a division title.

By dropping that many to the Cards.. it really applies even more pressure to at least split with the Phillies.

Zero2Cool (18h) : Johnson didn't make it until 2020. Ring 2023. 🤷 Personally, he should have been in years prior to Hall.
    Zero2Cool (18h) : HUMP DAY
beast (18h) : Guys that have a good shot at making the NFL Hall of Fame usually get into their teams pretty fast
beast (18h) : Yeah, but is Kampman and the others in the NFL Hall of Fame?
Zero2Cool (18h) : Johnson was Hall of Fame, 2020. Should haev been in Ring a year later, not three years.
    Zero2Cool (18h) : I could be wrong there though
Zero2Cool (18h) : Guys like Kampman, Tim Harris, Al Harris, etc all over 15 years. Hall of Fame is 5 year wait
Zero2Cool (18h) : I guess I see players in Packers Hall come way later
beast (18h) : Yeah, usually teams hall of fames are a much lower bar than the NFL
Zero2Cool (18h) : is it uncommon for Hall before Ring?
    Zero2Cool (19h) : S Xavier McKinney named first-team All-Pro by NFLPA
beast (20h) : I missed it, sorry, but he got into the NFL Hall of Fame years before that
Zero2Cool (20h) : Jones took his sweet ole time!
Zero2Cool (20h) : Yeah, he's in the ring of honor, just saw video and his name is up there
    Zero2Cool (20h) : Didn't they have a thing in 2023 for Jimmy's ring of honor? I swear I saw it
beast (21h) : Though if they're legitimately trying to re-sign MM, then it makes sense.
beast (21h) : Jerry Jones still hasn't put Jimmy Johnson in the Ring of Honor, but he's in the NFL's Hall of Fame, Jones is petty
Mucky Tundra (8-Jan) : Unless the Cowboys are planning an extension, seems kinda petty
beast (8-Jan) : Cowboys denied Bears request
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : From what I'm reading, MM is under contract through the 14th of January; after that he's free game
Zero2Cool (6-Jan) : McCarthy let go or not extended??
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : Chicago Bears have asked the Dallas Cowboys permission to interview Mike McCarthy for head coaching vacancy
Zero2Cool (6-Jan) : The winners page that is

beast (6-Jan) : Thank you, and I was really opening we were going to get 4 or more tied for the top 3.
beast (6-Jan) : Thank you, and I was really opening we were going to get 4 or more tied for the top 3.

    Zero2Cool (6-Jan) : congrats porky on winning 2023 pick'em! (oops sorry)
Zero2Cool (6-Jan) : Packers have $60M+ of 2025 cap space on paper TODAY.
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : Missed FG into a Lions TD; that'll do pig, that'll do
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : That might be it for the Vikings
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : Oh so the refs do know what intentional grounding is
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : what the hell was that Goff?! Not much pressure and he just air mails it to Harrison
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : They really need to to get rid of the auto first down for illegal contact
Martha Careful (6-Jan) : watching the Vikings and Lions it's understandable why they swept the Packers. So much better product
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : Even when GB got pressure he was throwing darts; vs no pressure on that last pass he just air mails an open guy
Zero2Cool (6-Jan) : didn't have guys in his face ... pressure makes difference
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : Where was this Darnold vs GB?
    Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : BALL DON'T LIE
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : how was that not a safety? Goff throws it at an offensive lineman
    Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : Zero, I thought that was a given! ;)
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : Zero I looked through earlier and noticed the same thing. Bonkers year. I just wonder if beast put any money on games
Zero2Cool (6-Jan) : I'm hoping for BLOODBATH. Pummel one another.
Zero2Cool (6-Jan) : 8 people in pick'em would have won any year with their total lol
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : I'm rooting for the Lions to lose.
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : God help me but I'm rooting for the Vikings to...Vikings to...Christ I can't say it
    Zero2Cool (6-Jan) : 4 td for Rodgers
