We'll usually win the first game or two before we go into the "MM Lull," weeks 3-10. I predict a win!

Damn. I guess we're tied with the Saints for the #1 D in the NFL in '11. I still say we crush them.

BOB McGINN: Formidable, closely matched head coaches, defensive coordinators, quarterbacks, tight ends and wide-receiver corps. But the Saints can't match Clay Matthews, Green Bay's secondary or home field. The edge goes to the Packers.

TOM SILVERSTEIN: The home team has dominated the kickoff game, and the opportunity to get the Saints at home on grass provides a much better shot for the Packers. Watch whether the Saints force the Packers to run the ball and whether the Packers can. Packers 27, Saints 24.

MICHAEL HUNT: If the Saints cannot stop Jermichael Finley, and there's little reason to believe they can, the rest of the Green Bay offense will do more damage than Drew Brees can make up for in an entertaining opener. Packers 31, Saints 27.

GARY D'AMATO: Mike McCarthy's teams have been notoriously slow out of the gate, and the defense will struggle to stop Brees and Co. Still, the Packers have an embarrassment of riches on offense. If the line can keep Aaron Rodgers on his feet, they'll score plenty of points. Packers 31, Saints 28.

TYLER DUNNE: Expect a shootout that goes down to the final possession. New Orleans' newfound balance prevails this time. Saints 34, Packers 31.

LORI NICKEL: Since 2004, the defending Super Bowl champion has hosted - and won the kickoff game, but the last three were close. In the past, Green Bay would start preparing for the opener in the off-season; this year, they started looking at the Saints really just this week, said Tramon Williams. Could be wild. Packers 27, Saints 24.

The talent is there for a big-time offensive shootout, but early in the season defenses usually prevail. So the Packers get the edge because they have the better defense. Also, since the NFL went to having the defending Super Bowl champs host the Thursday night opener, the home team is 7-0.

Saints 31, Packers 28

The Saints overhauled their running game, but it’s their passing game that’s so dangerous. Drew Brees has been one of the league’s most productive quarterbacks since he arrived in New Orleans in 2006. The Packers’ defense is better than it was when the Saints put up 51 points in the 2008 meeting, but it will have its hands full again.

Packers 30, Saints 27

Aaron Rodgers vs. Drew Brees is the marquee matchup, but it’s the defenses that will decide the game. Can a bulked up Saints defensive line, and the linebackers behind it, take advantage of a Packers offensive line that had preseason problems? Can the exotic Packers defensive scheme get home and keep Brees from hitting pockets opened behind the blitz?

Mike Vandermause
Packers 24, Saints 23

This game features the two best teams in the conference and should provide a sneak preview of the NFC championship game. Although the high-powered offenses generate most of the attention, the outcome will be decided by which defensive playmaker shines, and I’m guessing it will be either Clay Matthews or Charles Woodson.

I have a sneaking suspicion that the Packers will stick to their nickle defense most of the game. If the Saints are smart they will mix in a bevy of two-TE and/or two-RB sets. If they can have some explosive runs it will open things up on the back end. Green Bay's defense has to make plays on 3rd downs. The Brees from last year that threw a bunch of picks would seem to have less pressure on him with a talented backfield.

Offensively, Green Bay needs to be ready for unpredictable schemes. Last year the Saints played predominantly Cover 2 against the Vikes, when their NFC Championship matchup was very blitz heavy. Expect the Saints to oscillate between schemes to try to confuse the Packers offense. I think we can absolutely score against the Saints, but (Captain Obvious) we can't turn the ball over.

I'm thinking the defenses make more plays than we expect and Green Bay wins 27-21.
William Henderson didn't have to run people over. His preferred method was levitation.

Every time someone predicts the Packers are going to be in a shootout it does not turn out that way.

I think this game could seriously come down to turnoffs and how does the GB pass protection hold up against the NO pass rush?

On offense I'm expecting the Saints to surprise some people and run the ball more often looking for a more balance attack than last year for them with some power runners as well as speedy Sproles in the back field.... and of course use the play action to go for the big plays in the passing game. And they might run at Walden, which run defense hasn't been his strong suit.

On defense... I'm not sure if they can handle both good WRs AND Finley in coverage... plus their D coach Greg Williams seriously enjoys being aggressive so they attack the pass blocking hoping to give Rodgers and the RBs less time to get something going.

I expect the Packers on offense to rotate stuff and do a bit of everything but stick with something that seem. I'm thinking Mike McCarthy is gonna like these sets the most

2 WR, 1 RB, 2 TEs
2 WR, 1 RB, 1 TEs, 1 FB
3 WR, 1 RB, 1 TEs

On defense I think Capers is gonna expect a bit more run but try the nickel and see if it can hold up to the run. If it can he'll try to stick with it forcing them to then pass in it. If not maybe try some 3-4 Eagle with Pickett at nose and Raji at the 3 and Neal at the 5 on the other side.
