I had doubts about the Spygate tapes containing nothing being destroyed.. still believe it to be shotty at best the leagues claims why the tapes were destroyed without being released.

Now one has to question if Goodell is steering some players (or those subject to discipline) decisions and where they should play.

I guess it is part of the downside to being the sole voice on conduct.. which I still find questionable.

Why not have some sort of committee body to rule upon issues like this while not being into question the integrity of the league as a whole?

Vick says he didn’t want to play for the Eagles
Posted by Mike Florio on August 18, 2011, 7:02 AM EDT

Eagles quarterbacks Vick and Young watch a replay while playing against the Baltimore Ravens in a NFL preseason football game in Philadelphia Pennsylvania Reuters

In an interview with GQ that was published at the magazine’s website moments ago, Eagles quarterback Mike Vick tells Will Leitch that Vick, the 2010 Associated Press Comeback Player of the Year, didn’t want to play for the Eagles.

“I think I can say this now, because it’s not going to hurt anybody’s feelings, and it’s the truth. . . . I didn’t want to come to Philadelphia,” Vick said. “Being the third-team quarterback is nothing to smile about. Cincinnati and Buffalo were better options.”

Vick ultimately was persuaded — by Commissioner Roger Goodell and other NFL officials — to pick the Eagles.
Bills and Bengals fans surely will be thrilled to know that the league office is participating in personnel decisions; they also would probably want to know why Vick was steered away from their teams. (Leitch writes that both the Bills and Bengals would have “allowed Vick to start”; it’s hard to imagine that the Bengals would have benched the guy they currently refuse to trade.)

The old Mike Vick would have ignored Goodell and anyone else who told him anything other than that which Vick wanted to do; the new Mike Vick heeds such advice. But the old Mike Vick still made a cameo appearance during the interview, when he took the position that only the media cares about his history of dogfighting, gambling, and . . . what else was there? Oh yeah, killing in cold blood dogs that were deemed unfit to fight other dogs.

“They are writing as if everyone feels that way and has the same opinions they do,” Vick said. “But when I go out in public, it’s all positive, so that’s obviously not true.”

We’re not sure we buy that logic. When it’s time to sniff jocks, lots of people become more than a little phony. Then there’s the fact that we all love a good redemption story, so we all root for Vick on his ride back to the top.

The media, frankly, is part of that. Plenty of reporters have moved on completely from Vick’s dogfighting days, and it will be a major issue again only if the Eagles make it to the Super Bowl and Vick is subjected to the intense scrutiny that goes along with it.

Or if Vick starts fighting dogs again.

We doubt that the latter will ever come to fruition, but from time to time we see periodic flashes of the old Mike Vick, like when he bailed on his interview with Oprah Winfrey. And even if the new Mike Vick is smart enough to never fight dogs again, there are other ways in which the old Mike Vick can make trouble for the new Mike Vick.

The new Mike Vick realizes that it’s important to demonstrate contrition for his crimes. But the old Mike Vick inches closer to the surface at times, indignant over the fact that he went to jail for something that he’d probably still be doing if he hadn’t been caught.

NFL says Vick wasn’t steered to Philadelphia

In a new interview with GQ, Eagles quarterback Mike Vick says he wanted to play for the Bills or the Bengals, and that he was steered to Philadelphia.

The league denies that Vick was steered anywhere.

“Michael Vick’s decision on where to play to put himself in the best position to succeed was entirely his own,” NFL spokesman Greg Aiello tells PFT via e-mail. “Commissioner Goodell obviously met and spoke to Michael and his representatives as part of his decision on whether to reinstate Michael and on what terms. But the Commissioner would never steer players to or away from particular teams and did not do so in this case.”

NBC’s Tony Dungy, who served as a league-appointed advisor for Vick, expressed doubt earlier today on The Dan Patrick Show that Goodell would have advised Vick to play for the Eagles. Dungy added, however, that Vick received a lot of advice (including from Dungy) that Philadelphia was the best place to go.

It remains to be seen whether Aiello’s remarks will be enough for the folks in Buffalo, many of whom are up in arms about the perceived slight. Former Bills running back Thurman Thomas made an unscheduled call to WGR radio on Thursday, and Thomas wasn’t happy about Vick’s allegation.

“It goes all against what the Commissioner has been trying to do,” Thomas said. “It’s like another slap in the face to the Buffalo Bills. I’m upset about it. I want to know what the whole idea was about wanting him to go to Philadelphia and not Buffalo or Cincinnati. I think Mr. Wilson needs to give the Commissioner a call and see what happened.

“It was wrong, I think there needs to be an investigation.”

Thomas may be right; we wouldn’t expect the NFL to admit that Vick was steered to Philly, even if his recollection is accurate. But who would conduct an investigation? We’re aware of no “internal affairs” department within the league office, which would have the ability to investigate the conduct of the Commissioner. If anything were to happen, the owners would have to decide to do it on their own, and we doubt that such an effort would be good for the league’s overall best interests.

I said it a month or so ago as well, one voice is bullshit. There should be more.

What was written in GQ is a little concerning, but it's ambiguous. Dan Florio then modified that information to make it sound worse. The words "steered" and "persuaded" were not in the GQ article. Put it this way: I trust Florio a lot less than I trust Goodell.

I suspect that Goodell and others in the league did not specifically tell Vick which team would be best for him, but rather, they discouraged him from going somewhere where he would start right away, because they were afraid (quite rightly) that he would be too much of a lightning rod for controversy. They wanted him to keep a low profile. That led him to choose the Eagles, who were probably one of only a handful of teams, if not the only team, that wanted to bring him in as a backup.

Goodell's concern, as commissioner, is the public image of the NFL, and this is a case where that was affected by where a player chose to play. A tricky situation, no doubt, and Goodell's handling of it deserves some scrutiny. But unless some more damning information comes out, I don't have a problem with it.

And yes.. destroying the Spygate tapes without releasing the content does play into it.. IMO.

He can talk about Pryor circumventing the "integrity" of the draft yet ignore the questions upon his decisions that have a possible direct impact of the integrity of the entire game.

packerfanoutwest (2h) : Feliz Navidad!
Zero2Cool (6h) : Merry Christmas!
beast (15h) : Merry Christmas 🎄🎁
beast (23h) : Sounds like no serious injuries from the Saints game and Jacobs and Watson should play in the Vikings game
packerfanoutwest (24-Dec) : both games Watson missed, Packers won
Martha Careful (24-Dec) : I hope all of you have a Merry Christmas!
Mucky Tundra (24-Dec) : Oh I know about Jacobs, I just couldn't pass up an opportunity to mimic Zero lol
buckeyepackfan (24-Dec) : Jacobs was just sat down, Watson re-injured that knee that kept him out 1 game earlier
buckeyepackfan (24-Dec) : I needed .14 that's. .14 points for the whole 4th quarter to win and go to the SB. Lol
Mucky Tundra (24-Dec) : Jacobs gonna be OK???
Zero2Cool (24-Dec) : Watson gonna be OK???
packerfanoutwest (24-Dec) : Inactives tonight for the Pack: Alexander- knee Bullard - ankle Williams - quad Walker -ankle Monk Heath
packerfanoutwest (24-Dec) : No Jaire, but hopefully the front 7 destroys the line of scrimmage & forces Rattler into a few passes to McKinney.
packerfanoutwest (24-Dec) : minny could be #1 seed and the Lions #5 seed
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : We'd have same Division and Conference records. Strength of schedule we edge them
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : I just checked. What tie breaker?
bboystyle (23-Dec) : yes its possible but unlikely. If we do get the 5th, we face the NFCS winner
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : Ahh, ok.
bboystyle (23-Dec) : yes due to tie breaker
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : I mean, unlikely, yes, but mathematically, 5th is possible by what I'm reading.
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : If Vikings lose out, Packers win out, Packers get 5th, right?
bboystyle (23-Dec) : Minny isnt going to lose out so 5th seed is out of the equation. We are playing for the 6th or 7th seed which makes no difference
Mucky Tundra (23-Dec) : beast, the ad revenue goes to the broadcast company but they gotta pay to air the game on their channel/network
beast (23-Dec) : If we win tonight the game is still relative in terms of 5th, 6th or 7th seed... win and it's 5th or 6th, lose and it's 6th or 7th
beast (23-Dec) : Mucky, I thought the ad revenue went to the broadcasting companies or the NFL, at least not directly
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : I think the revenue share is moot, isn't it? That's the CBA an Salary Cap handling that.
bboystyle (23-Dec) : i mean game becomes irrelevant if we win tonight. Just a game where we are trying to play spoilers to Vikings chance at the #1 seed
Mucky Tundra (23-Dec) : beast, I would guess ad revenue from more eyes watching tv
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : I would think it would hurt the home team because people would have to cancel last minute maybe? i dunno
beast (23-Dec) : I agree that it's BS for fans planning on going to the game. But how does it bring in more money? I'm guessing indirectly?
packerfanoutwest (23-Dec) : bs on flexing the game....they do it for the $$league$$, not the hometown fans
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : I see what you did there Mucky
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : dammit. 3:25pm
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : Packers Vikings flexed to 3:35pm
Mucky Tundra (23-Dec) : Upon receiving the news about Luke Musgrave, I immediately fell to the ground
Mucky Tundra (23-Dec) : Yeah baby!
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : LUKE MUSGRAVE PLAYING TONIGHT~!~~~~WOWHOAAOHAOAA yah
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : I wanna kill new QB's ... blitz the crap out of them.
beast (23-Dec) : Barry seemed to get too conservative against new QBs, Hafley doesn't have that issue
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : However, we seem to struggle vs new QB's
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : Should be moot point, cuz Packers should win tonight.
packerfanoutwest (23-Dec) : ok I stand corrected
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : Ok, yes, you are right. I see that now how they get 7th
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : 5th - Packers win out, Vikings lose out. Maybe?
beast (23-Dec) : Saying no to the 6th lock.
beast (23-Dec) : No, with the Commanders beating the Eagles, Packers could have a good chance of 6th or 7th unless the win out
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : I think if Packers win, they are locked 6th with chance for 5th.
beast (23-Dec) : But it doesn't matter, as the Packers win surely win one of their remaining games
beast (23-Dec) : This is not complex, just someone doesn't want to believe reality
beast (23-Dec) : We already have told you... if Packers lose all their games (they won't, but if they did), and Buccaneers and Falcons win all theirs
