Poll Question: Should the NFL have Guaranteed Contracts?

What is your take on the NFL guaranteeing contracts, well, that's a bit confusing, they don't currently, but ... should they?

I think the NFL should guarantee contracts. I think the NFL is the only professional environment that a contract is not actually honored by either participants of the contract.

What are the pro's an con's to not having guaranteed contracts or actually having guaranteed contracts?

I think it would help the league out a lot. It would force teams to make wiser decisions (sorry Vikings, nothing can help your weak asses) and increase parity. Then again, teams like the Redskins who don't know how to balance the $40 in their wallet could prove to increase parity in the league.

No on a couple fronts..

1) With a non guaranteed contract the player has less of a reason to "coast" through the contract.

2) It would take away the power of incentives within the contracts...

3) It would marry a franchise to a player upon injury.. with the nature of the sport it isn't practical.

4) Players take out insurance policies against injury.. so they are protected so to speak.

Struggling to come up with some pro reasons beyond your mention of holding a team accountable.. that can be done without guaranteeing the contract.. just count any contract (even if player is cut during the contract) against the cap numbers.. it would erase the funny numbers in contract that will never be obtained and it will punish franchise more effectively for signing poor deals.

Oh Shawn shut up with your good ass response. I wanna change my vote now. Dammit.

I didn't consider the whole incentive aspect (which I've stated more times than anyone can count that I think that's how every contract should be) when I created this thread.

Maybe I can try to keep my initial post theme going with saying they should have a guaranteed base salary, but incentives are where they make the most of the money. Yeah, there we go, that's it.

The up front bonus money a player receives when he signs the contract is his guaranteed money. The rest is paid if he performs.
