You're telling me that the team doesn't make money with TV contracts, stadium sales, and merchandising...?

I can hardly believe that an NFL team is a money losing venture...

Whom said they were losing money?

But they also don't have an owner which can overextend on these large signing bonuses and guaranteed monies over the first couple years of the contract.

The Packers have the reserves to do that in a limited number... so they have to hit on the one they do sign, which makes their own players safer investments.

That doesn't mean we shouldn't be active in FA, but I understand the economic concerns they have surrounding their caution.

Again.. publicly owned and they have to be responsible financially to said public. Not Jerry Jones and his own checkbook of sorts.

Now if you mean all the owners.. no they aren't losing money, but they are certainly spending a ton on players with risky contracts in FA.. it is all about the guaranteed money and to players and not being able to recapture that investment if they tank.

IE.. a case like Smoking Joe Johnson signed here.. that crippled the Packers cap when he blew.. if the player can't delivery on the field, the franchise certainly should be able to go retrieve a portion of that money back from said player.

I think Thompson has gone public before with his dislike for spending money in free agency. I don't think this has much merit right now.

regardless of the answer, it doesn't change anything. If it wasn't Ted being pressured to stay well beneath the cap, it would be another GM. In the words of our GM, it is what it is.

and I agree, but Gary and Steve ( form wssp ) are pretty sure that Ted Thompson was told do not spend..

so if he TRULY was told do not spend, who is to say he isn't lying?

Not that i believe any of this, but just trying to see it from THEIR side

Was Wolf handcuffed? I don't think so.
He went out and spent on free agents that would help us win and win we did.
Ted Thompson is handcuffed by himself.
By not making upgrades through freeagency year in and year out he has now put the Packers in a hole.
We need upgrades at OL, DL and linebacker and now it's too late to do it one or two key players at a time.

if you spent your entire allowed salary cap last year, and had 0 $ left, would your profit margin been the same at the end of the fiscal year?

Mark said only this..

There would have been a little bit of a swing....

They already sell out every game. Unless spending more of the salary cap increased revenue elsewhere, how could it not lower their profit margin?

This is a meaningless question in my opinion.

Who were the packer board people with Wolf, and who was President of the Packers with Wolf..

is it the same now?

The board, I don't know of more than one change and of course the president has changed, so that is a fair and perhaps relevant question.

If the Packer president and members of the board are putting money ahead of championships by ordering the GM not to spend to win, they might as well disband the organization now.
As fans we should demand nothing but an effort to put the best players on the field in order to win championships.
As a longtime Packer fan I cannot allow myself to believe that the president and the board would put money ahead of winning, therefore I don't believe they are handcuffing Ted Thompson.

Green Bay didn't get to be " Title Town " by not fielding winning teams.

beast (8-Aug) : It's a brand new rule, either last season or this season, prior, all pre-season IRs were done for the season
beast (8-Aug) : But the Packers would have to use one for their return from IR spots on him, when they cut down to 53.
