What To Expect From C.J. Wilson In His Second Season

DE C.J. Wilson could end up becoming a starter for the Green Bay Packers in his second season. That's certainly not what I expected back in April 2010, when they made him a seventh round draft choice. He certainly deserves an opportunity based on a strong 2010 season from start to finish. He didn't get a lot of opportunities, his only significant playing time was during the October 24th game against the Vikings, when the Packers were down to only a couple of healthy lineman, and for the next couple games thereafter while DE Cullen Jenkins and DE Ryan Pickett returned from injuries. And his greatest asset might be his health because it's a concern for a couple other lineman.

He'd certainly take a back seat if Jenkins is re-signed, but his departure is almost assured due to an expected high price tag and the team's complete lack of negotiations prior to the lockout. His fellow 2nd year player, Mike Neal, is coming back from rotator cuff surgery. DE Howard Green played at defensive end last season, but at 350 lbs. he may not have as much versatility to offer. DE Jarius Wynn is another option, but the Packers initially released Wynn and kept Wilson for the start of the 2010 season. I do expect DE Justin Harrell to return, even if he hasn't heard anything from the team, just because it probably wouldn't hurt their salary cap or pocket book at this point to give him one last chance. Rookie 7th round DE Lawrence Guy might offer some competition too.

With the various looks defensive coordinator Dom Capers brings on defense, he's likely to use a rotation on the defensive line. He often pulls a defensive end to bring in an extra defensive back anyway. In the lightest pencil, I've gotten Wilson written down as the starter, but even then his playing time might be more comparable to a part-time player vs. an every down defender.

Solid player to have in the rotation. Not a big play guy at this stage of his career.

I think the article actually undersells C.J. a little bit. The writer said that he got significant playing time in only one game, but it seems to me that he played quite a few snaps almost every week as the season wore on. He held up well against the run and got some pressure on the QB. I still think Neal will start, but C.J. will get lots of playing time. Considering his strong finish last year, he is also a candidate for a big improvement this year.

I agree the article undersells somethings...

Wilson playing time was more than just the Vikings game... got the start in Dolphins, Jets and Super Bowl... as well as four tackles in the Falcons playoff game.

The article writes Neal off because of surgery. And writes Green off because he's 350 pounds (which he very well might of been last year). Both of whom I think were ahead of Wilson in playing time while they were healthy and with the Packers. Then the article, writes in DE Lawrence Guy as possible competition...

I saw a lot of progress in Wilson. I my book if you can hold your own as a rookie better things are coming later.

Assuming Jenkins is gone I have Wilson as the #3 DE ahead of Green. He will be in the rotation as a regular. He will only improve as he gains experience.

NT - Raji, Pickett, Green

DE - Pickett, Neal, Wilson, Green, + 2 For a total of 7

It is not as much a weakness as some people are making it out to be.

After Neal, he's the guy I'm most excited about on this line. He's very capable of making a big impact this year.

Zero2Cool (28m) : I wanna kill new QB's ... blitz the crap out of them.
beast (28m) : Barry seemed to get too conservative against new QBs, Hafley doesn't have that issue
Zero2Cool (1h) : However, we seem to struggle vs new QB's
Zero2Cool (1h) : Should be moot point, cuz Packers should win tonight.
packerfanoutwest (1h) : ok I stand corrected
Zero2Cool (1h) : Ok, yes, you are right. I see that now how they get 7th
Zero2Cool (1h) : 5th - Packers win out, Vikings lose out. Maybe?
beast (1h) : Saying no to the 6th lock.
beast (1h) : No, with the Commanders beating the Eagles, Packers could have a good chance of 6th or 7th unless the win out
Zero2Cool (1h) : I think if Packers win, they are locked 6th with chance for 5th.
beast (1h) : But it doesn't matter, as the Packers win surely win one of their remaining games
beast (1h) : This is not complex, just someone doesn't want to believe reality
beast (1h) : We already have told you... if Packers lose all their games (they won't, but if they did), and Buccaneers and Falcons win all theirs
Zero2Cool (1h) : I posted it in that Packers and 1 seed thread
Zero2Cool (1h) : I literally just said it.
packerfanoutwest (1h) : show us a scenario where Pack don't get in? bet you can't
Zero2Cool (1h) : Falcons, Buccaneers would need to win final two games.
Zero2Cool (1h) : Yes, if they win one of three, they are lock. If they lose out, they can be eliminated.
packerfanoutwest (2h) : as I just said,,gtheyh are in no matter what
Zero2Cool (2h) : Packers should get in. I just hope it's not 7th seed. Feels dirty.
packerfanoutwest (2h) : If packers lose out, no matter what, they are in
packerfanoutwest (2h) : both teams can not male the playoffs....falcon hold the tie breaker
packerfanoutwest (2h) : if bucs win out they win their division
beast (2h) : Fine, Buccaneers and Falcons can get ahead of us
packerfanoutwest (2h) : falcons are already ahead of us
beast (2h) : Packers will get in
beast (2h) : If Packers lose the rest of their games and Falcons win the rest of theirs, they could pass us... but not gonna happen
packerfanoutwest (2h) : they still are in the playoffs
packerfanoutwest (2h) : If Packers lose the remaining games,,,,at 10-7
Zero2Cool (4h) : We can say it. We don't play.
Mucky Tundra (5h) : But to say they are in is looking past the Saints
Mucky Tundra (5h) : That said, their odds are very favorable with a >99% chance of making the playoffs entering this week's games
Mucky Tundra (5h) : Packers are not in and have not clinched a playoff spot.
buckeyepackfan (6h) : Packers are in, they need to keep winning to improve their seed#.
Mucky Tundra (15h) : Getting help would have been nice, but helping ourselves should always be the plan
beast (15h) : Too bad Seahawks couldn't beat Vikings
bboystyle (15h) : We just need to win Monday night and were in
Mucky Tundra (19h) : Or ties, but let's be real here
Mucky Tundra (19h) : Other scenario was Falcons+Rams losses
Mucky Tundra (19h) : Needed a Falcons loss for a Seahawk loss to clinch
buckeyepackfan (19h) : Am I wring in saying if Tge Vikings beat The Seahawks, The Packers clinch?
Mucky Tundra (21-Dec) : Agreed; you stinks
Zero2Cool (21-Dec) : I'm not beating anyone. I stinks.
Mucky Tundra (21-Dec) : rough injury for tank dell. guy can't catch abreak
beast (21-Dec) : So far the college playoffs have sucked... One team absolutely dominates the other
beast (21-Dec) : Well even if you weren't positive towards a guy, you wouldn't nessarily want to tell the media that (if they don't know about it)
Martha Careful (21-Dec) : I think MLF want Love to look past the end half issues, and feel good about his play. Our coaches generally keep a very positive tone.
beast (21-Dec) : I think a great running game will do that for most QBs
packerfanoutwest (21-Dec) : Coach Matt LaFleur has said quarterback Jordan Love is playing the best football of his career.
beast (21-Dec) : Oh, that's how you keep beating buckeye, with cheating
