Aaron Rodgers threw out the first pitch at the Brewers game last Thursday, and later, during the broadcast, the Super Bowl winning QB said that if the lockout continues the players will organize workouts at some point in the near future.
I gave my opinion on this subject six weeks ago, and after watching the Eagles “practice” recently in South Jersey, I feel just as strongly now as I did then. Philly’s get-together featured an awful lot of shaking hands, talking and laughing. Heck, if there were a few more women and a few less footballs, I would’ve thought I was re-living my high school reunion.
The New York Giants held player-organized workouts last week, and while I wasn’t there, the following quote suggests much of the same things were – or weren’t – happening a few hours up the turnpike: “The purpose was to get guys around each other, shake the football rust off,” center Sean O’Hara said. “This week was successful. I base that on our number one priority, [which] was safety. We came out every day this week, every day we talked about it and said, ‘Guys, stay safe.’ It’s great just to kind of get football back on the grain.”
Well, if the goal is to get teammates together and to make sure they stay healthy, the Packers should count Thursday’s Super Bowl ring ceremony at Lambeau as their first player-organized workout. Think about it. The entire roster and coaching staff will be in the same place at the same time. Talk about a chance to bond. And unless someone gets cut trying on his new bling, avoiding injury shouldn’t be a problem. As far as football-related activities are concerned, heck, let Rodgers throw the ring box to each of his receivers.
