I dunno.
When Gruden rattled off that play call, my eyes glazed over and I said, WTF?
I realize there's a grammar/system to these things, and they aren't quite as complex as it sounds to an outsider, but I'd be completely out to lunch. And, FWIW, I have three post-BA degrees.
As an aside, Newton's "36" reminded me of the one year I went out for football (7th grade). Since I was clearly an afterthought on the team, I almost never got to play in games or even practice scrimmages. But I had the playbook memorized. Or so I thought. First scrimmage series I get in, go to the huddle and the starting quarterback says, "17, on 2, break." Everyone was already walking up the line and Ihad no fucking idea what he was talking about. Because no one had ever told me that they had this shorthand numbering system. (It was nowhere in the playbook; I looked when I got home after practice that night.) Needless to say I looked lost, since the only thing I was sure of was the snap count.
And since the coaches/starters didn't encourage questions, and I was already a wimp hesitant to ask, well ... not surprisingly, I stayed a benchwarmer/third-stringer.
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
