I enjoyed Murphy and the players comments about the trip...

http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2011/may/10/packers-launch-tailgate-tour-despite-lockout/?page=all#pagebreak

GREEN BAY, WIS. (AP) - With the NFL lockout in full swing, three Green Bay Packers players and the teams president will spend the next five days sharing a bus that will cover more than 700 miles as it crisscrosses Wisconsin and Michigans Upper Peninsula.

Did somebody say awkward?

Guard Josh Sitton, linebacker Desmond Bishop and backup quarterback Matt Flynn are traveling in close quarters with president and CEO Mark Murphy on the teams sixth annual Tailgate Tour, which left from Lambeau Field on Tuesday morning. All four insisted that the ride wont be a bumpy one because of the labor strife and court fight battle between team owners and the players.

I dont think it will be awkward at all, said Murphy, who was a union representative as a player with the Washington Redskins and is now a member of the owners negotiating committee. I miss the players, and to spend some time with them will be great. Im sure well have some discussions about the current labor situation, but I think everybody realizes its kind of above us all.

Murphy made no attempt to hide his intention to talk about the labor situation with the players. The lockout has been in place since March 11 except for several confusing days when it was lifted by a federal judge in a decision that has since been put on hold.

Im going to interact with the players. Well have a good, open discussion, Murphy said. Obviously with my background having been a player, having worked for the union and been a player rep, I can talk a lot about the issues. So Im looking forward to it.

Added Bishop: Im sure itll come up with Mark Murphy on the bus. We cant talk about too much, but Im sure itll come up. Everybodys talking about it _ the entire world is talking about it. So Im sure itll come up.

Coach Mike McCarthy, general manager Ted Thompson and several other members of the football staff saw the bus off. McCarthy and Thompson shook hands and chatted briefly with the players, with whom theyve had virtually no contact since the lockout began.

That was a little awkward. I havent seen em since the Super Bowl, said Sitton, whose position coach, offensive line coach James Campen, also came out to see the bus off. We havent talked for 50-some days now, so I didnt know the protocol. It was a little weird, but its all good.

While coaches and front-office staff are banned from having contact with players, there is an exception for charitable events such as the tour.

The group planned its initial stop for Marquette, Mich., on Tuesday followed by visits to three Wisconsin cities _ Ashland on Wednesday, Eau Claire on Thursday and Wausau on Friday _ before returning to Green Bay on Saturday. Community events are planned at each stop, with ticket sales benefiting a previously selected charity.

Its not going to be weird, Flynn said. This week is for the right reasons and a good cause. Thats why we came up here.

The Tailgate Tour is just good public relations.

Someday the Packers may need some favors (like the 295 million remodel) this is relatively cheap and makes the fans and the public feel good about supporting the Packers.

Things I liked best about the article were Gilbert Brown's two things about purple (1,2,3) and Mark Murphy's comment at the end... lol...

Packers president Mark Murphy: We are going to retire Favres number

by Kareem Copeland

ASHLAND Former Packers quarterback Brett Favre has been a constant topic on the sixth annual Tailgate Tour and team president Mark Murphy was asked about the eventual retirement of the No. 4.

Eventually, hell come back into the fold. We are going to retire his number, Murphy said to a round of applause. He deserves that for what he did as a Packer. There are very few players in our history that had their number retired. He deserves it though. But its a very, very meaningful honor and we want to do it at a time when its meaningful for both him and the organization.

I think its probably going to be a few years. We want to make sure that hes really retired first. We made that mistake when he first retired after the 2007 season. Ironically, we were going to retire his number and have a big ceremony at the opening game that next season against the Minnesota Vikings. Little did we know hed end up playing that season for the Jets.

Former receiver Antonio Freeman elaborated on Favre and his relationship to the organization.

This is a league and a world of second chances, Freeman said. So, I think at one point in time well have to give Brett Favre a second chance to come back home. He did have a very meaningful career here. Im personally biased because he and I shared so many magical moments. He was my quarterback for, basically, my entire career. He was a guy who threw me all of my touchdowns.

Things like this, youre torn because as a player you see the drive to want to continue to play football, so you appreciate that. But you never appreciate the fact that he puts on purple on Sundays as his second career. So, thats a problem. But in due time, hell be back.

Since the Vikings were part of the Favre discussion, Murphy asked former defensive tackle Gilbert Brown to give his thoughts on the color purple.

Ive got two things about purple, Brown said. No. 1, grown men should never wear purple. Two, they look like 11 little Barneys out there. Three, the Vikings are horrible.

Murphy then added a little jab by saying, And also their stadium has a hole in it.

Good stuff. Freeman was a TD machine for years. 61 TDs is nothing to scoff at. AFAIK, he may have caught the most TD catches from Favre.

Really sucks though that the players haven't talked or seen the coaches since the SB. This lockout sucks. Don't mean to change the subject here, but I'm putting the blame on the owners.

Perhaps we should start calling vikesrule and Formo "Barney the Elder" and "Barney the Younger"?

beast (2-Jan) : Thanks dfosterf, I'm still kicking myself for last week, as I forgot to change to pick Vikings and Lions... after putting in a holding spot.
Zero2Cool (2-Jan) : First alternate: Elgton Jenkins Other alternates: Jordan Love, Kenny Clark, Keisean Nixon, Tucker Kraft, Josh Myers, Jaire Alexander
Zero2Cool (2-Jan) : Pro Bowl still a thing? Guess Packers have three. Jacobs, Gary, McKinney.
dfosterf (2-Jan) : It's a mine field with all the players sitting, etc
dfosterf (2-Jan) : There was quite a bit of "chalk" matchups this year it seemed, but not this week coming up
Zero2Cool (2-Jan) : Or we got better and by we I mean everyone except me
Zero2Cool (2-Jan) : We have about six that by percent would have won nearly any season. I guess 2024 was predictable 🤷
Zero2Cool (2-Jan) : You can check previous seasons. I quick did it and don't think anyone hit 70% before
dfosterf (2-Jan) : Hats off to the Beast
dfosterf (2-Jan) : I'm at 71.76% in pick 'em. 2nd place. Beast is at a flat 75% 9 games ahead. That 75% has got to be unprecedented this late in the season
beast (2-Jan) : I don't care deeply, just want some good entertaining games
Zero2Cool (2-Jan) : BTW, not serious.
Zero2Cool (2-Jan) : You don't care about it either!!!!
Zero2Cool (2-Jan) : NIL and Portal killed college, no one cares about it.
Mucky Tundra (2-Jan) : outside of Texas-Arizona St, it's been a snoozefest
beast (2-Jan) : I expect Georgia will change that tomorrow, but we'll have to wait and see. If they do, then only Big 10 and SEC are left.
beast (2-Jan) : So much for Conference Championship meaning something as 100% (so far) of the conference Champions lost their first playoff game.
Zero2Cool (1-Jan) : Jaire had surgery, season over.
Mucky Tundra (1-Jan) : I guess I need a new sig Pic. Boo
Mucky Tundra (1-Jan) : Eric Dickerson approves of this decision
beast (1-Jan) : Eagles are resting RB Saquon Barkley, so there is no chance he breaks the record despite being just 101 yards from it
Zero2Cool (1-Jan) : Patriots are waiving veteran pass rusher Yannick Ngakoue
beast (1-Jan) : Happy New Year's 🥳🎉
beast (31-Dec) : I want to them chant some songs for Daniel Whelan
beast (31-Dec) : Let's win one! Also, hopefully the Irish will stand with Daniel Whelan
Mucky Tundra (31-Dec) : After London and Brazil, I could go without an overseas game for a while
Zero2Cool (31-Dec) : Packers. Steelers. Ireland. 2025. Reports say.
Zero2Cool (30-Dec) : Matt Lafleur on if Jaire will play again this season. "Yeah I don't know... he's been dealing with swelling."
Mucky Tundra (30-Dec) : After the way they played for most of the game yesterday, I don't see how you can sit anyone for the whole game
Zero2Cool (30-Dec) : I'd say play everyone. Going into playoffs at 7th seed on two game lose streak - yucky
Zero2Cool (30-Dec) : Do the Packers have any best players?
beast (30-Dec) : Play or Rest*
beast (30-Dec) : Should the Packers play or free their best players vs the Bears?
Zero2Cool (30-Dec) : Packers should be 3 - 2 in the Division. Bonkers being swept by both Lions and Vikings. yikes
go.pack.go. (30-Dec) : All crazy stuff…and good point beast
beast (30-Dec) : Packers should be 0-5 in the division, can't say I saw that coming, even 1-4
Zero2Cool (30-Dec) : Sam Darnold 35 TD's ... another one
Zero2Cool (30-Dec) : Baker Mayfield, 39 TD's ... can't say I saw that one
Zero2Cool (30-Dec) : No matter who is playing as 7th, I think we want them to win. Get rid of 2nd seed haha
go.pack.go. (30-Dec) : That would be dhazer who was rooting for Minnesota
beast (30-Dec) : Well, Commanders are currently the 6th seed and Packers the 7th
beast (30-Dec) : Who was it in Chat, that wanted the Vikings to win (because Lions fans upset them) because Packers could not lose the 6th seed?
beast (30-Dec) : If Falcons win, Packers stay as the 6th seed and Falcons lead the NFCS, if they lose, Commanders 6th and Bucs take NFCS lead
beast (30-Dec) : Win or Loss, the NFCS is going down to week 18
Mucky Tundra (30-Dec) : if the Falcons win, how does that affect the overall NFC playoff picture? Does it mean that the NFC South comes down to week 18?
beast (30-Dec) : If Commanders win, the Packers drop to the 7th seed
beast (29-Dec) : Taylor still at it!
beast (29-Dec) : Colts get the ball and fumble turn over
packerfanoutwest (29-Dec) : Jets pull Aaron Rodgers for Tyrod Taylor
