Other than the Ponder pick, I think the Vikings draft was OK.

Well, considering how many more picks they could have gotten for #12 AND still have gotten Ponder, I consider it a fail.

But as always.. We can never TRULY judge a draft for years to come.

I think it's funny because not only was Ponder's number 7 a reach, but so was T-Jack's number 7..

Coincidence?

Christian Ponder

Ponder is a thinking man's quarterback with terrific intangibles and leadership skills.

Smart, poised pocket passer with terrific awareness.
Patient, displays a sense of timing, and hits receivers as they leave their breaks.
Stands strong in the pocket, throws a catch-able ball, and puts touch on passes when necessary. Has adequate arm strength and throws the out patterns well.
Senses pressure, steps up to avoid it, and knows where his receivers are on the field. Looks away from cover targets and goes to secondary receivers.
Terrific job commanding and controlling the offense.
The ability to place passes where only his receiver has a chance at the ball.
Mobile and can get outside the pocket to make throws on the move.

Grade 2.83
3.09 to 2.75 -- First-Year Contributor -- Prospect that has the ability to make plays from the get-go and start early into his rookie season.

Bwahahahahaha...VR, you are HILARIOUS... :onfloor:

you left out some of that SI.com article, though...

Negatives: Off the mark when he tries to get extra speed on throws. Cannot drive the deep pass. Long throws tend to float and hang. Struggled with injuries two consecutive seasons.

Analysis: "Ponder is a thinking man's quarterback with terrific intangibles and leadership skills. His physical ability is adequate for the next level, but the injuries that have mounted the past two years and his lack of durability makes him a risk. Ponder watched his draft stock drop in 2010 but he will get a chance to make an impact at the next level because of his physical and mental attributes."

Projection: 2nd

I was going to monkey with the quotes but then decided they were damning as is...adequate arm-strength--physical ability adequate for the next level (personally, I would have liked a little better than adequate for that high of a 1st round pick)...

Most damning--projection 2nd round (likely to have been there by the time the Vikes picked the next time around).

Well macbob.....perhaps, perhaps not.

I'm just tired of the Vikings(spell that the Childress debacle) attempting to bring old guys for the "instant gratification". Or the Jackson experiment.
That did not work out very well.
I have been wanting for years for the Vikes to develop a long term program.
Webb and Ponder...who knows. We'll see.
But at least it's a positive step, IMHO.

In the mean time.....

Critics of Vikings draft pick Christian Ponder may be the ones reaching

Most of the folks making the "reach" comment haven't done their own research.
They were parroting what they heard or read from the likes of self-proclaimed NFL draft experts and media creations Mel Kiper Jr., Todd McShay and Mike Mayock.

Keep in mind that Kiper, McShay and Mayock are part of the same bunch of experts who raved about what great NFL quarterbacks JaMarcus Russell and Vince Young would be.
(Russell is out of football, and Young is on his way out.)

Check out what Kiper had to say when Russell was drafted first overall by the Oakland Raiders in 2007:
"Three years from now, you could certainly be looking at a guy who is certainly one of the elite top five quarterbacks in this league."

Ponder now, I'll wait to see how he performs in NFL games.

That seams about fair. They once raved about a QB with a cannon for an arm who had about the best pro day ever, but he busted, so now there's a good chance they're wrong on Ponder.
