Overview

Schlauderaff is not a very athletic guard, but he always seems to get the job done. He is a well prepared player that never seems to be out of position. He plays with a "bad attitude" and fights through the whistle. He can be an effective run blocker, but he loses leverage at times and plays with a narrow base too often. His slow first step and limited athleticism may prevent him from being a starter at the next level, but his toughness and work ethic will likely get him a spot on an NFL roster. Schlauderaff should come off the board on the third day of the draft.

Overview

Scouts looking for a consistent guard prospect will have Schlauderaff's name on their list. After redshirting as a freshman in 2007, he played in Utah's 52 games played in the past four years, starting the final 49.

He is thin for the position, but his lack of bulk hasn't led to injuries. Outside of a minor knee issue that caused him to miss the final three quarters of the San Diego State game as a junior in 2009, he's been a model of health.

Such a lengthy career led to a few positional experiments. He spent some time at left tackle in 2009, but his experience at left guard led to third-team AP All-America, second-team Walter Camp All-America and first-team All-Mountain West honors as a senior.

A decorated run blocker, he has plenty of work to do in pass protection. His speed in the open field is more than adequate, but his poor short-area quickness and lateral mobility make him a liability against crafty pass-rushers and a likely candidate to move over to the right side as a backup early in his NFL career.
Analysis

Strengths: Has adequate top-end speed for the position. Loaded with experience, has starting since his redshirt freshman season. Plays with a nasty mean streak and takes pride in running defensive lineman into the ground. Gets solid hand placement on defenders and works to finish his blocks. Can sit into his stance and anchor against rushers when set. Drives players out of the hole once he locks on and is fast enough to get around the center when pulling. Plays with above-average awareness and anticipates blitzes and stunts.

Weaknesses: Is limited athletically and is below average when it comes to lateral mobility. Will turn his shoulders and run down the line with defenders instead of mirroring and sliding his feet. Allows defenders to use their hands and does a poor job of protecting his body with short arms. Is slow out of his stance and fails to get into initial position in a timely manner despite knowing where to go. Lacks a violent punch and does not have the core strength, base or build to absorb bull rushes. Does not operate well in space and struggles to engage moving targets at the second level.
