Biggest blunder pick: Minnesota taking Christian Ponder.

Classic Vikings. The names and the faces may change but the results are always the same. maybe if they had a new stadium deal in place.

I wonder if they really like what they saw in Ponder, of if they were just desperate to get a QB because of the state of the league right now. Perhaps they just didn't want to get caught without a starting QB.

WINNERS

Detroit Lions - Opposing offensive lines, including the unit protecting Aaron Rodgers' backside, had better bring their "A" games when they face the Lions. With the 13th pick, Detroit took Auburn defensive tackle Nick Fairley (27 tackles for loss, 13 sacks last year). He will team with consensus 2010 rookie of the year Ndamukong Suh, Corey Williams and Kyle Vanden Bosch to give the Lions what should be a dominant defensive line. Fairley was ranked fifth on Mel Kiper's board.

Cam Newton - The Carolina Panthers were desperate for a quarterback. Auburn's Newton was the only QB worth even considering with the No. 1 pick. He played in a run-heavy scheme and faces a steep learning curve in the NFL, but he'll be the face of the franchise and will make a boatload of money.

J.J. Watt - Exhibit A for what hard work, determination and persistence can do. The defensive end from Pewaukee and the University of Wisconsin started out as a tight end at Central Michigan and paid his way to UW. On Thursday, he was the 11th pick in the draft, taken by Houston to help plug holes in a leaky defense. Is this a great country, or what?
LOSERS

Minnesota Vikings - The Vikes reportedly tried hard to trade down. When they couldn't find a partner, they reached for Florida State quarterback Christian Ponder. ESPN analyst Jon Gruden defended the pick, saying Minnesota needed a quarterback and "there is no sure thing in free agency." Still, it's a stretch to project Ponder as a rookie starter, so the Vikings probably will have to sign a veteran.

Commissioner Roger Goodell - With a target on his back because of the ongoing labor strife, the commish was booed lustily when he approached the podium at Radio City Music Hall in New York to commence the draft. Then he proceeded to embrace each draft pick as if he were a long-lost son. Just call him Pete Rozelle Lite.

ROLLING THE DICE

Atlanta Falcons - They moved up in a trade with Cleveland to take physical Alabama receiver Julio Jones. After getting thumped by the Packers, 48-21, in the playoffs, the Falcons obviously felt they needed another playmaker opposite Roddy White to be able to get past Green Bay. They can only hope Jones gives them that dimension. "I think this guy struggled throughout his career to catch the football," Gruden said.

I can't believe how much Atlanta gave up. It looked like the Herschel Walker trade out there. I will LMFAO if Jones winds up being a bust. Besides, Atlanta isn't a receiver away from the SB, they are an entire defense away from the SB. We didn't wind up punting ONCE against them.

Atlanta had the number 5 scoring defense last year and gave up a whooping 2 points more than Chicago did all season. They just ran into an Aaron Rodgers that couldn't be stopped BUT by the hand of God.

That said, they could use another receiver but they have other needs too. They've given up far too much for a receiver that is being criticized for his ability to catch the ball (what the hell else does a receiver do anyway).

Does any one else find irony in the fact that the Patriots stole Gabbert with the 3rd round pick they got by renting Moss to the Vikings for 4 games. While the Viking used the 12 overall to get a 3rd round rated Ponder.

Mucky Tundra (6h) : VICTORY! We have (moral) victory!
TheKanataThrilla (6h) : Hey they mentioned that we 3-peted
Mucky Tundra (7h) : seems to me the 49ers should have traded Aiyuk when they had the chance
Mucky Tundra (7h) : if the Eagles get it down to the 1, do they Tush Push or give it to Barkley?
TheKanataThrilla (7h) : 49ers have a money problem if they want to sign their QB
Mucky Tundra (7h) : Wait for real? Didn't he just get an extension two years ago?
Zero2Cool (7h) : 49ers gonna trade Deebo. Interesting
TheKanataThrilla (7h) : Replays always never seem to show the holdings
TheKanataThrilla (7h) : Great throw by Hurts
Mucky Tundra (7h) : Where Carter falls prey to bad off the field influences (to be clear, not saying he'd clip someone though)
Mucky Tundra (7h) : Had Carter not gone to Philly were they already had a lot of old college friends, he ends up in a similar spot to Aaron Hernandez
Mucky Tundra (7h) : I think some of his coaches told scouts to stay away
Mucky Tundra (7h) : the street racing incident+conditioning and motivation problems
beast (7h) : Then Carter was street racing, where the other car crashed and people died... and other teams were scared to pick Carter for some reason
beast (7h) : I think the Saints traded up, giving their next year 1st to the Eagles, and then they sucked and Eagles got the 10th overall pick
packerfanoutwest (7h) : wtf Barkley?
TheKanataThrilla (7h) : Getting Carter and Nolan Smith in the first round in 2023 was pretty darn good
Mucky Tundra (8h) : for some reason i'm thinking of a draft where the Eagles where in the mid 20s and a top player fell all the way to them
TheKanataThrilla (8h) : I think so. I would need to look it up. Think it may have been Carolina's pick.
Mucky Tundra (8h) : i'm not sure who i'm thinking of now
Mucky Tundra (8h) : oh fuck me i messed that up
Zero2Cool (8h) : Jordan Davis was 13th overall
Zero2Cool (8h) : Carter was 9th overall
Zero2Cool (8h) : Eagles had 15th and 10th selections, moved to 13 and 9 to get Davis and Carter back to back
Zero2Cool (8h) : Eagles traded up for Carter, didn't they?
Mucky Tundra (8h) : Obviously he was a huge risk but getting a top 5 talent on the dline in the mid 20s is fortuitous
Mucky Tundra (8h) : Jalen Carter falling into their lap certainly helps
TheKanataThrilla (8h) : And we could only wish to have this type of D
TheKanataThrilla (8h) : It's not like Philly has had low draft picks, but has managed to get themselves a top notch pass rush. We spend so much draft capital of D
packerfanoutwest (8h) : another crap halftime show
TheKanataThrilla (8h) : I think it is over, but then I think of Atlanta and want Philly to go in with the same intensity in the second half
Mucky Tundra (8h) : And with a Pass Rush that might as well be on a milk cartoon and no Jaire
Martha Careful (8h) : I cant help but feel good about how well the Packers D played in Philly during the playoffs
Mucky Tundra (8h) : this game is over
Mucky Tundra (8h) : This might be the kill shot here
Mucky Tundra (8h) : oh that's such a bad penalty for KC after getting the 3rd down stop
TheKanataThrilla (9h) : Philly DL has come to play
TheKanataThrilla (9h) : Ceoper DeJean with the INT scored...bad memories of draft night
Mucky Tundra (9h) : ok scratch that
Mucky Tundra (9h) : Game feels like last years Super Bowl: 49ers started off in control, moved the ball well but didn't have much of a lead to show for it
TheKanataThrilla (9h) : KC jumped and they call it on Eagles. WTF refs
TheKanataThrilla (9h) : If he was offside why did you let him pop the QB?
TheKanataThrilla (9h) : I like that Eagles are controlling time of possession so far.
Mucky Tundra (9h) : If the Eagles are going to win, this is how they do it: jump all over the Chiefs and don't let it turn into a close one
TheKanataThrilla (9h) : Bad throw created that penalty.
TheKanataThrilla (9h) : Amazed Philly got that hit to the helmet call.
