Favre in huddle a confidence booster for Jets- ERIK BOLAND | erik.boland@newsday.com
November 15, 2008
Brett Favre said he was nervous. "Nervous as heck," he added.

The Jets, after winning the overtime coin toss Thursday night, faced a rabid Gillette Stadium crowd and a Patriots defense riding the momentum their offensive teammates had provided at the end of regulation.

But Favre led a Jets regular-season version of "The Drive," a 14-play beauty that never gave the Patriots' offense a chance. It ended with Jay Feely's 34-yard field goal that gave the Jets a 34-31 victory and sole possession of first place in the AFC East.

Favre finally had put his signature on a Jets win, doing so by exuding a confidence that he might not have felt but spread to his team nonetheless.

"It is very special to have a guy like that step into your huddle," said receiver Jerricho Cotchery, who had five catches for 87 yards, including a 46-yarder in the second quarter that should be a catch-of-the-season candidate. "I didn't see any nervousness on his face; I saw a quiet confidence on his face, so to speak. When he stepped into the huddle, we knew we were going to be able to get it done because that's the way he's been this entire year."

Thursday was Favre's 42nd career win after being tied or behind in the fourth quarter. No. 41 came Oct. 26 when he hit Laveranues Coles with a TD pass with one minute left in a 28-24 victory over Kansas City. But that was at home, against the struggling Chiefs. Not on the road against a team that had come back from 24-6 and 31-24 deficits, forcing overtime with an improbable 16-yard TD pass to Randy Moss with one second left in the fourth quarter.

But once defensive captain Kerry Rhodes made his prescient "tails" call on the overtime coin flip, a sense of belief took over the Jets' sideline.

"When you have Brett Favre coming into the huddle, it makes everybody else in the huddle step their games up," said Leon Washington, who electrified that same sideline with his 92-yard kickoff return for a TD in the second quarter. "We're fortunate to have a guy like that leading us."

Favre, given how unstoppable the Patriots' offense had been in the second half, believed the Jets needed to score on their first possession of overtime.

"I felt like it's either now or nothing; this is your one shot," Favre said. "They were on offense, our defense was tired - it was all or nothing."

Favre threw incomplete to Washington on his first pass attempt of the drive but went 5-for-5 thereafter, by far the biggest being his 16-yard strike to rookie tight end Dustin Keller on third-and-15 from the Jets' 15-yard line.

"I think Brett just . . . he instills confidence in the group," Eric Mangini said. "There's a sense of ease when he has the ball. You feel he's going to get it to the right place."

And right now for the Jets, that place is first.

LW was on all the ESPN shows yesterday, nothing but praise for BF, the Jets players are getting what us fans love about Brett, leadership, great play, all along having fun doing it.

Another perfect Sunday coming up Packers at 1pm, and now BF and The Jets have been moved to 4:15!!!!

I was addicted to The Hokey Pokey, but I turned myself around!

My opinion but if you look at play alone I'm not that impressed with Brett this year although he is getting sharper but never have I been more aware of his intangibles then this year. All the years in GB you start taking it for granted but seeing him change the whole fortune of a franchise is awesome

Zero2Cool (13m) : I would think it would hurt the home team because people would have to cancel last minute maybe? i dunno
beast (21m) : I agree that it's BS for fans planning on going to the game. But how does it bring in more money? I'm guessing indirectly?
packerfanoutwest (33m) : bs on flexing the game....they do it for the $$league$$, not the hometown fans
Zero2Cool (1h) : I see what you did there Mucky
Zero2Cool (1h) : dammit. 3:25pm
Zero2Cool (1h) : Packers Vikings flexed to 3:35pm
Mucky Tundra (1h) : Upon receiving the news about Luke Musgrave, I immediately fell to the ground
Mucky Tundra (1h) : Yeah baby!
Zero2Cool (1h) : LUKE MUSGRAVE PLAYING TONIGHT~!~~~~WOWHOAAOHAOAA yah
Zero2Cool (3h) : I wanna kill new QB's ... blitz the crap out of them.
beast (3h) : Barry seemed to get too conservative against new QBs, Hafley doesn't have that issue
Zero2Cool (3h) : However, we seem to struggle vs new QB's
Zero2Cool (3h) : Should be moot point, cuz Packers should win tonight.
packerfanoutwest (4h) : ok I stand corrected
Zero2Cool (4h) : Ok, yes, you are right. I see that now how they get 7th
Zero2Cool (4h) : 5th - Packers win out, Vikings lose out. Maybe?
beast (4h) : Saying no to the 6th lock.
beast (4h) : No, with the Commanders beating the Eagles, Packers could have a good chance of 6th or 7th unless the win out
Zero2Cool (4h) : I think if Packers win, they are locked 6th with chance for 5th.
beast (4h) : But it doesn't matter, as the Packers win surely win one of their remaining games
beast (4h) : This is not complex, just someone doesn't want to believe reality
beast (4h) : We already have told you... if Packers lose all their games (they won't, but if they did), and Buccaneers and Falcons win all theirs
Zero2Cool (4h) : I posted it in that Packers and 1 seed thread
Zero2Cool (4h) : I literally just said it.
packerfanoutwest (4h) : show us a scenario where Pack don't get in? bet you can't
Zero2Cool (4h) : Falcons, Buccaneers would need to win final two games.
Zero2Cool (4h) : Yes, if they win one of three, they are lock. If they lose out, they can be eliminated.
packerfanoutwest (4h) : as I just said,,gtheyh are in no matter what
Zero2Cool (4h) : Packers should get in. I just hope it's not 7th seed. Feels dirty.
packerfanoutwest (4h) : If packers lose out, no matter what, they are in
packerfanoutwest (4h) : both teams can not male the playoffs....falcon hold the tie breaker
packerfanoutwest (4h) : if bucs win out they win their division
beast (4h) : Fine, Buccaneers and Falcons can get ahead of us
packerfanoutwest (5h) : falcons are already ahead of us
beast (5h) : Packers will get in
beast (5h) : If Packers lose the rest of their games and Falcons win the rest of theirs, they could pass us... but not gonna happen
packerfanoutwest (5h) : they still are in the playoffs
packerfanoutwest (5h) : If Packers lose the remaining games,,,,at 10-7
Zero2Cool (6h) : We can say it. We don't play.
Mucky Tundra (8h) : But to say they are in is looking past the Saints
Mucky Tundra (8h) : That said, their odds are very favorable with a >99% chance of making the playoffs entering this week's games
Mucky Tundra (8h) : Packers are not in and have not clinched a playoff spot.
buckeyepackfan (8h) : Packers are in, they need to keep winning to improve their seed#.
Mucky Tundra (17h) : Getting help would have been nice, but helping ourselves should always be the plan
beast (18h) : Too bad Seahawks couldn't beat Vikings
bboystyle (18h) : We just need to win Monday night and were in
Mucky Tundra (21h) : Or ties, but let's be real here
Mucky Tundra (21h) : Other scenario was Falcons+Rams losses
Mucky Tundra (21h) : Needed a Falcons loss for a Seahawk loss to clinch
buckeyepackfan (21h) : Am I wring in saying if Tge Vikings beat The Seahawks, The Packers clinch?
