I was reading he's due to make an extra million on the 15th day of the league year, additional to his 5.5 million salary.

6.5 seems kind of a lot for Ryan Grant. I know he adds 1,200 yards rushing and good for maybe half dozen scores ... I suppose with the cap projected to being 163 million that's not too bad.

I dunno ... feels a bit much.

Much of that 5.5 million is probably based on incentives, no? If so, there's no guarantee he'll earn that much money, unless he has another solid season. If he does rack up 1200+ yards and 6+ scores, I'm ok with that salary, at least for next season.

I like Ryan Grant but if we get near the salary cap, he'd be #1 on my list of people who are ok to let go of. For my arguments, I'd refer to my "Elite RBs are a waste of money" thread in the NFL section.

1,203 + 1,253 + 45 2501 total yards during contract

So, 1599 yards rushing this season and he's going to be in a lot of money.

$5.75 million + $500k + $4 million = $10.25 million

I'm assuming 1599 would be top 5 in the NFC and since there's not an off season, didn't add in the off season bonus.

Thanks for the contract info, Zero. That is a lot of money, and it is debatable whether he is worth that much. I don't think it is an outrageous amount for a productive starting RB, though, and Ted should honor the contract.

I hadn't realized that Grant is going into a contract year. He should be highly motivated.

I think if we only got one more solid year out of Grant and let him walk, I would be OK with it. Hopefully we have his replacement in Starks and if not, we should be getting one this draft of next.

I think I'd have a hard time seeing Grant getting a new contract with the Packers unless he exploded again this year, and even then it seems unlikely.

Yes, I think this will be Grant's last year as a Packer. He will turn 29 in December, and RBs get used up mighty fast in the NFL. All the more reason to ride him hard this year. He'll want the carries anyway, so he can put up big numbers and get a good contract offer. There's a good chance he'll do that, but the offer probably will come from another team.

I like Ryan Grant. He's done a very good job for us.

Dodd and GregC stole my thunder on reasons for him being expendable AFTER this year. It gives the team another year to assess what they have with Starks as well, making sure he's not just a one-year-wonder and is able to remain healthy, even if in a presumed split-time role.

Also, his contract incentive said 4 million for 4,100 yards- that seems like a strange number to me (as opposed to say 4,000)

wpr (21-Jan) : Oregon and Georgia were locks. Without the luxury of extra playoff berths, Ohios St would have been more focused on Michigan game.
wpr (21-Jan) : Zero, no. If there were only 4 teams Ohio State would have been one of them. Boise St and ASU would not have been selected.
Zero2Cool (21-Jan) : So that was 7 vs 8, that means in BCS they never would made it?
