taking an hd file and converting it to a .avi would severely degrade the quality

I'd definitely like it if it isn't difficult to burn to a dvd. Actually I'd like it even if I have to keep it on the computer. Maybe I need to read the whole thread to see what's been said about this.

Edit: ISO and also Thanks a ton!

Converting any video to DVD will increase the volume of disk space used.

AVI 1.45 GB
DVD 4.2 GB

More data? Nah, but more disk space used, yes.

For anyone looking to play a DVD iso on the PC, you can create a "fake drive" and "mount" the ISO using Daemon Tools.

http://download.cnet.com/DAEMON-Tools-Lite/3000-2646_4-10778842.html

One thing to note, the last time I installed this it brought with it one of those stupid browser toolbars, so remember to read every page of the installer and uncheck any extra crap it wants to install.

You will of course need to have the appropriate DVD decoder software as well, so for someone without a proper DVD drive on a laptop maybe its not worth the effort.

But for anyone wanting to simply watch the ISO on your computer without burning a DVD its a good option.

I am down for the 720P version too, AVI or ISO doesn't matter to me, file size also doesn't matter to me. =)

Oh also, converting AVI(compressed) to DVD will result in double compression, as you're taking a compressed source and recompressing it with a different codec, maybe not really noticeable, but just thought it went along with the whole dvd vs avi conversation. So DVD will be a larger file and probably a little worse image quality as well. 🙂

I have a MKV to AVI software, but my first go the file ended up being over 26GB. That's a little unacceptable. I've tried finding good software that will convert MKV to DVD, also, have failed in that too.

The MKV file is absolutely gorgeous and it's in 5.1 sound.

You may want to look into something a little better for editing/encoding. I would recommend Adobe Premier, but I know that is likely going to be out of your budget, but it is recommended if you can get access to it.

http://www.virtualdub.org/  ) which is completely free, for some basic video editing, and it will probabbly have enough options as far as compression goes to get a usable file size.

For reference, blurays use the h.264 enconder, so that may be a place to start. Here is a youtube tutorial for getting h.264 running with VDub:

If you want to cut me out a 10-60 second or so raw AVI file, I can do some more testing on compression methods and get back to you, just let me know.

I found the 720p file MKV, I didn't record to it. Heck, I didn't even get to watch the game in that great of resolution, lol.
