The thing I love about both these guys is that they DON'T FUMBLE!

Grant:: averages ~2 fumbles per regular season game.

Starks: no fumbles in his NFL career, or in college.

I'm a little hesitant to crown Starks the starter just because of his injury history. He was a nice piece at the end of the year and gave us enough of a punch in the running game to at least make teams account for it.

He and Grant will make a nice tandem next year, and I'd have no problem with bringing Jackson back if the price is right. That's a solid group where the team could concentrate on other positions in the draft if all are brought back.

All I will add.. is that it will be enjoyable to watch the battle for carries next season.

Grant will walk in as the starter, but he will have to defend his role.. we are in a good position next season with these two options.

"His best football is in front of him," said McCarthy. "He has all of the tools, the work ethic, the intelligence and the instincts to be an every-down player." Starks had over 100 catches in college, but has been pulled for Brandon Jackson on all pass downs in the playoffs. Still, it appears the Packers prefer Starks to Ryan Grant in terms of potentially being a complete back.

I found that last line particularly interesting.

That last line makes me think that the rotoworld folks are talking out of their rear ends. Who said that the Packers prefer Starks to Grant? Mike McCarthy? I need to see the source. I think they just made that up.

This is our second Starks vs. Grant thread, but I guess we all need something to argue about now that we've won the Super Bowl, and this is as good a subject as any. I think they are pretty close in their abilities, and those who see huge differences are deluding themselves. Starks looks a little tougher but has not yet shown breakaway speed, which is something that Grant has shown at least occasionally. Starks is more exciting because he's a younger player and could continue to progress.

We'll see what happens in training camp. I wouldn't be surprised if an injury to one of them is what settles the matter, but I would be very happy to have them splitting carries.

Go watch the Seattle playoff game in '08 and tell me he's not at the very least a real RB.

You mean ol' "Fumble, fumble, run in a straight line really fast"? Yeah, I'm sorry dude. When I say "real" I mean a born RB. Somebody who can read, cut and juke. Grant seemed real in 07 for sure. But that's really where it seemed to end. I just hope Starks isn't the same.

I agree with Twinkiegorilla.

I was kinda surprised to read that Starks doesn't fumble. His running style is very reckless - arms and legs flailing all over. Every time he carries I think the ball's going to come out.

Let's just remember the rule: You cannot call a player a "fumbler" until he fumbles at least once at some point in his football career.

I seem to remember another member of our community saying that Starks had a fumbling problem in college. From the looks of the above posts, that is in no way correct. Starks played incredible for a rookie, not to mention that he hadn't played for 2 years and wasn't able to partake in many of the drills and different practice/game experiences that immensely compliment the skills of a RB.

I think that it is too early to write off Grant. We could very easily have 3 backs, just like we used to with Ahman Green, Tony Fisher, and Najeh Davenport. The difference: the three that we have now are better than those three. It's going to be another great season.

I'll go ahead and agree with this and say once again that I'd love to be proven wrong. I just don't think I'm going to be.

By no means am I saying Starks is on the same talent level with this, but I think James Starks running style reminds me of how Adrian Peterson runs. Very upright, and powerful. I don't think he's as fast or powerful as Peterson. Just the style of running reminds me of him at times.
