McCarthy on Starks

Feb 2, 2011 4:33:26 PM

Here's Packers coach Mike McCarthy on University at Buffalo running back James Starks: "He had a hamstring injury throughout the spring. We thought that we had it under control going into training camp, but that was not the case. He missed all of training camp so he was placed on PUP and just missed a lot of padded work, all the fundamental work, foundation work that you need as a young player. The development has been consistent since his opportunity to come onto the 53. I think it is clearly evident to everybody to see the player that he can be. What is exciting about him is that his best football is in front of him. He has all of the tools, the work ethic, the intelligene and the instincts to be an every-down player. Everything is in front of him. Running the football will definitely be a factor in this game and James will be a part of it."

Starks has rushed for 263 yards in the playoffs so far. The Packers team playoff record is 316 yards by Dorsey Levens in 1997. The NFL record for a rookie in the playoffs is 342 yards by Washington's TIm Smith in 1987. So Starks needs 79 yards to set the league rookie playoff record.

RotoWorld  comments:

Packers coach Mike McCarthy touted James Starks as a potential "every-down" back down the line.

"His best football is in front of him," said McCarthy. "He has all of the tools, the work ethic, the intelligence and the instincts to be an every-down player." Starks had over 100 catches in college, but has been pulled for Brandon Jackson on all pass downs in the playoffs. Still, it appears the Packers prefer Starks to Ryan Grant in terms of potentially being a complete back.

I found that last line particularly interesting.

I think he already is, just based purely on his instincts. Grant cuts once if you're lucky, and avoids his own O-linemen if you're really lucky. Yeah, he's fast. Yay. I'm over it. Get Starks pounded into the line-up and let him develop.

I agree with Twinkiegorilla.

I've said it before, but let's see what kind of RB Starks becomes with a whole offseason program behind him. The fact that he performed as well as he did in the playoffs against the best teams in the NFL, after missing his senior year and a lot of the offseason/preseason/season is a little ridiculous. He could be a monster steal for the Packers.

By the way, I don't think Grant picks up that 3rd down conversion when Starks got stood up and bounced it outside.

I can answer that right away: He doesn't.

I'll say it over and over again...but Starks just has the right kind of instincts, both physically and mentally, to be a star RB (or at the very least a REAL RB--something we've not had in eons).

I agree with Twinkiegorilla.

I think it's a little harsh to say Grant isn't a REAL running back. Go watch the Seattle playoff game in '08 and tell me he's not at the very least a real RB.

I'm excited about Starks, not because of Grant's deficiencies, but because of Starks' ceiling.

I think Starks is a more natural pass catcher than Grant. He also seems much better at breaking tackles.

Grant seems like more of a home run hitter. He also is a guy the ALWAYS gets positive yards. He seems like the superior pass blocker than Starks at this point in his career.

The thing I love about both these guys is that they DON'T FUMBLE!

Grant:: averages ~2 fumbles per regular season game.

Starks: no fumbles in his NFL career, or in college.

This.

People like to conveniently take things away from Grant when they don't need to. You can compliment someone without insulting someone else.

Impossible. I think you must mean "per regular season."

I don't think one game can or should define a players career or value. He also fumbled twice in that game too. I was at that game, awesome game!

I think Starks hits the hole harder than Grant, catches better than Grant and is more decisive. And that's coming from someone who appreciates Grant's 1,200 back to back seasons and thinks he's a good cog to our machine.

Zero2Cool (12h) : Forgot there was even a game last night haha
TheKanataThrilla (12h) : That was terrible.
TheKanataThrilla (12h) : Watching that game in its entirety yesterday is proof positive that I am a football addict.
beast (13h) : And horrible time management multiple times... and not being able to score more than 3 points on a team with talent
beast (13h) : Realizing the Bears didn't fix it from the previous week and do the same thing, getting the game to overtime
beast (13h) : They probably are not tanking, but they've absolutely mismanagement some things, such as Vikings seeing the Packers blocked FG and realizing
Zero2Cool (14h) : Crazy of Bears to have that mindset that is
Zero2Cool (14h) : Hail Mary stop away from 5 - 2. Not sure how that flips to tanking. Crazy mindset if true
beast (14h) : I've quietly questioned if Bears are tanking on purpose... they suddenly got a lot worse with some simple concepts like 101 clock management
wpr (16h) : Watching bares fans melt down over how putrid their team is, so enjoyable. It's the gift that keeps on giving.
Mucky Tundra (27-Dec) : The Seattle Seahawks defeat the Chicago Bears 6-3. Jason Myers had 6 RBIs for Seattle while Cairo Santos had 3 RBI for Chicago
beast (27-Dec) : Not nessarily, he might of been injured either way. He's playing about 50% of the games the last 4 years
Zero2Cool (26-Dec) : If they'd been more patient with him, he'd be back already. Putting him out there vs Bears caused him to tweak it and here we are.
packerfanoutwest (26-Dec) : well this is his last season with the PAck, book it
beast (26-Dec) : Sounds like no Alexander (again), I'm wondering if his time with the Packers is done
Zero2Cool (26-Dec) : Could ban beast and I still don't think anyone catches him.
Mucky Tundra (26-Dec) : Houston getting dog walked by Baltimore
packerfanoutwest (25-Dec) : Feliz Navidad!
Zero2Cool (25-Dec) : Merry Christmas!
beast (25-Dec) : Merry Christmas 🎄🎁
beast (24-Dec) : Sounds like no serious injuries from the Saints game and Jacobs and Watson should play in the Vikings game
packerfanoutwest (24-Dec) : both games Watson missed, Packers won
Martha Careful (24-Dec) : I hope all of you have a Merry Christmas!
Mucky Tundra (24-Dec) : Oh I know about Jacobs, I just couldn't pass up an opportunity to mimic Zero lol
buckeyepackfan (24-Dec) : Jacobs was just sat down, Watson re-injured that knee that kept him out 1 game earlier
buckeyepackfan (24-Dec) : I needed .14 that's. .14 points for the whole 4th quarter to win and go to the SB. Lol
Mucky Tundra (24-Dec) : Jacobs gonna be OK???
Zero2Cool (24-Dec) : Watson gonna be OK???
packerfanoutwest (24-Dec) : Inactives tonight for the Pack: Alexander- knee Bullard - ankle Williams - quad Walker -ankle Monk Heath
packerfanoutwest (24-Dec) : No Jaire, but hopefully the front 7 destroys the line of scrimmage & forces Rattler into a few passes to McKinney.
packerfanoutwest (24-Dec) : minny could be #1 seed and the Lions #5 seed
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : We'd have same Division and Conference records. Strength of schedule we edge them
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : I just checked. What tie breaker?
bboystyle (23-Dec) : yes its possible but unlikely. If we do get the 5th, we face the NFCS winner
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : Ahh, ok.
bboystyle (23-Dec) : yes due to tie breaker
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : I mean, unlikely, yes, but mathematically, 5th is possible by what I'm reading.
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : If Vikings lose out, Packers win out, Packers get 5th, right?
bboystyle (23-Dec) : Minny isnt going to lose out so 5th seed is out of the equation. We are playing for the 6th or 7th seed which makes no difference
Mucky Tundra (23-Dec) : beast, the ad revenue goes to the broadcast company but they gotta pay to air the game on their channel/network
beast (23-Dec) : If we win tonight the game is still relative in terms of 5th, 6th or 7th seed... win and it's 5th or 6th, lose and it's 6th or 7th
